I believe the islands which are still colonies (French or English) have a much lower crime rate than the independent islands.

From what I've heard, St. Vincent is actually pretty bad with all the serious crimes over there. St. Lucia is also trying to deal with more violent crimes, see link (http://www.caribbeannetnews.com/cgi-script/csArticles/articles/000014/001406.htm). They aren't alone; many other small islands are also feeling the effects of a rise in serious crimes. Grenada, as far as I can tell, is pretty safe (not that I'll go out on the beach past dark, mind you!).
The Caribbean has always had crimes of convenience (pickpocketing, snatch-and run, burglary, and occasional hijacking), but the worrying trend now is the the move towards serious crimes (like murders, rapes, kidnappings, assaults, etc). Not everyone is feeling it equally as bad, but nobody seems immune.

who measures that anyway? there's crime everywhere - maybe not violent crime like we have here.

Zpan, don't you think this is a bit overdramatic ?
....and I know you know this, it must have just slipped you, but it should be "Trinidad is" not "Trinidad's "

Well I believe the statistics like murder rates show that for instance over the last 5 years there are around 15-20 times more murders per head of population in Trinidad than in Martinique.
I believe that the reasons for the difference between independent islands and those still controlled from Europe include:
- people are generally better educated, so the propensity for violence is reduced
- the colonies are artificially maintained at a higher economic level than they would be otherwise be at, and in particular there is a social safety net
- the local police and justice system in the colonies are submitted to outside checks - this enforce standards and reduces corruption
- it would be politically unacceptable in the "mother country" for things in the colonies to degenerate to the Jamaican or Trinidadian level

i dunno if it's related to crime, but i was looking on encarta encyclopedia, and the projected population for trinidad in the year 2025 is 873,030 and for the year 2050 it's 614,692. The population growth rate is -0.74 percent, so the population will only keep on dropping.

There are certain groups who have a vested interest in tracking crime patterns as it relates to the quality of life on those islands. These people are generally in the travel or relocation industry; their clientele are generally people with disposable income who want to travel to areas on both short term and long term basis.
Examples are retired  people wanting to get out of the colder climates during the winter months, or perhaps wanting a tropic retreat on a permanent basis in their twilight years.
