Yuh know I jess post in another thread about how I cyah understand the need to pay 7000 on a costume that eh really evolve from beads, feathers and scraps of material.

I wish I could have come home to lime and lemon for carnival cause it had some memorable fetes but I think I won't enjoy paying 1000 for an all inclusive fete or even more than 400 for any fete and that fete must have at least 3 bands live and premium drinks and catered meals to go with that money. I also want proper security and I must be de only woman dey ;) ...seriously though.

We does have to pay some kinda mortgage money to these promoters for rum and coke  and stag and carib...ah doh think it worth it. Crime is going to escalate so people can pay for their women's outfits for each fete, dey hair, shoes, and tickets and money to spend. Costumes to pay for, and everything else that we does buy to add on the days...glitter, tights, makeup rum food taxi gas money. Sigh!

:D
yea they wud take loan for carnival and be happy in Debt.
Paying $1000 for an all inclusive and then either having thing run out at the bar or having to face longgggg lines and can't even get bottled water. Or worse yet they giving you chits and when tht used up you have to buy.

KFCSpicy
10-29-2007, 11:27 AM
Now u see dat chit system...I eh down wid dat ah tall ah tall. But why Trinis still supporting these fetes? In other countries dey quick to boycott yuh tail and that is when yuh does see the power of the consumer. Not trinis dey rather see it from the angle that if I cud afford to go then that make me reallllllllllll posh and ting and u not posh and ting. Plus is shame in dey behind why some ah dem rather beg steel and borrow to go party.

Most people stay home so why they just can't make it public holidays? Most places does board up and barricade up or close early already.

There's a time for everything in life.

Been there done that...I looking to build a future for me and mine not wine and jam for two days in beads and sequins and feathers and at the end of it all making some non-entity with a bad idea to show my pwefen to all and sundry via a costume...richer and he/they blinging come ash wednesday and my tail suffering as a result financially. For every carnival costume price is a down payment price put away for my home and to build my nest egg.

Hold it down and walk on de safe side people. ~ I good.

KFC i just responded to you in another thread saying that i like you like a daughter, and now i see your post here, i like you even more. I came to NEW YORK in 1969, after living in ST.CROIX for two years, and i attended brooklyn college from 1970 february. I 'uses' to 'beat' pan, but i realized that i came here for a purpose. Now I am retired and i can go to any carnival in the world. So you keep your nose to the grind stone and you will make it. I like your attitude. Your future is ahead of you ( is it ?) , not behind you. REMEBER APTITUDE IS ONLY 30% OF SUCCESS, ATTITUDE IS 70%. DANCERBOY.

I am tryna do me and I fall down and make many mistakes but...I try to glean some knowledge from it. I am no where near house money yet but I have faith and I will plodd along until I get there. Plus I want to make sure that my mummy is well taken care of when she can no longer do for herself.

Thanks for the encouragement and the refreshingly kind words. It takes a special person to see the good in people no matter what. Wish u all the best hun.

for the $ your paying...ip is poorly organized...imho youre better off with Tribe, TRevellers, and yes...even Harts...

this yr...as in previous years...there were long lines at the mas camp for costumes...on the road some drinks trucks were closing off just so <bar closed>(& this is an all inclusive band eh)...and the ppl that i spoke with in the band were generally unsatisfied with the product...

it actually got to be so tiresome dealing with obnoxious IP staffers that me and the posse left the band around lunch time Tues and went and "jump with another band"...which was night and day compared w/IP :|

My last Carnival in T&T was back in 1968 and back then it was still an 'art ' with the focus of the design on form and fabric not that mass produce suff like they have now; back in those days if you wore a costume like the naked mas of today the news papers couldn't even publish your picture
The big contenders were George Bailey, Harold Salddenah, Edmon and Lil Hart, and of course my late maternal aunt (and her husband) Elsie and Stephen Lee Heung.........."Mama dat was Mas".

looks like the bacchanal started already...

according to a sean nero report in today's sunday guardian, Legacy; TRIBE; Masquerade; Genesis; DreamTeam; D Krewe; D’ Midas; Stampede; and Trevor Wallace and Associate have come together in a united front over the controversial band of the year (large) payment to brian macfarlane in this year’s competition...

according to saucytrini:
http://saucytrini.blogspot.com/2007/12/ ... orrow.html (http://saucytrini.blogspot.com/2007/12/bandleaders-to-protest-tomorrow.html)

The bandleaders have dubbed their united front "The Association of Bandleaders" and if this matter is not resolved have threatened to boycott all "NCC competition venues, especially Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain and ultimately embarrass the State." So that means the possibility exists that Island People Mas, Harts, Pulse 8, Ronnie and Caro,Evolution and Mc Farlane could parade at these NCC venues regardless; guaranteed wins for the large bands Harts, Island People and Mc Farlane with medium bands Evolution, Pulse 8 and Legacy also having the 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots!

the guardian article states that the group is demanding a retroactive increase of prizes to the medium, small and mini band of the year winners for 2007. apparently macfarlane was “secretly” paid an extra $350,000 by the NCBA from the original $100,000 allotted for copping the large band of the year title this year.

is this sour grapes? or a legitimate concern? who knows? but the action has started!

snowbird
12-30-2007, 11:36 AM
Seems like all they are asking for is a 'transparent' system where everyone knows exactly what the awards are; to me it's a little 'suspect' when the top prize is announced as being one amount, then they find out that more than triple that amount was actually paid out? Can't blame them.

I do recall though, last year when they took the 'show' to South it was a huge success, if so, I say...... do it again, you can't argue with success; I know the fans would like to have it in POS, but as was proven last year, there were just as many willing to attend down south. :)

  The reason why I remembered you situation so well is because the same thing happened to me a few years ago too, and yes, it does take a while for the colour to eventually even out    ; so don't forget, this year....... sunscreen, sunscreen sunscreen

Call it what you will. But you all must expect a degree of desensitivty when all you all do is moan about the situation. We all know the importance we all know the government is weak in this area, we all are fully aware painfully so with the countdown and numerous nauseous discussions going on about things yet no one is attempting to fix. So call me insensitive I really can't be arsed.

I am tired of the drama when none is called for. Every year carnival has murders and rapes. Death is a part of life, upgraded security or not.

List one year in the history of Trinidad and Tobago having a carnival where there was no deaths. Just one...making it reallll easy here for all yuh. Then tell me the numbers of deaths per carnival season going all the way back to the mid 80's....another easy task...and I will surely say you all have a right to make a whole ado about nothing.

Since there has been a murder or two every carnival for the last 50 years, are we to consider this par for the course ? Should our children and grand children say that there has been a murder or two for the last hundred years and accept that as part of the bachanal ?. Is there no progress to be made in keeping the peace at carnival time. Labor day usually have over one million revellers and spectators crammed into a small area. There was a time there 'uses' to be a lot of violence, but the powers that be put their foot down, not to mention the jewish community. Sure there are minor incidents to be expected in such a large gathering, but not murder every year. I gurantee if there is a murder every year the powers that be will stop the carnival on labor day. AND THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE KNOWS IT. They have already banned the sale, and (open) consumpton of alcohol. WE MUST STRIVE FOR A CRIME-FREE CARNIVAL. WE SHOULD EXPECT NOTHING LESS.

Yes your kids should expect it. Because quite frankly we have no Jewish community to give a toss about how it go affect their businesses only DOMA and even them downtown winin so who really is to care and put something in effect Dancer? If they eh do it 20 years ago yuh think they will do it now? Because all yuh steadily and morbidly doing a death countdown daily?

Well I guffaw at the naivety on here sometimes. Just because all yuh think things should be a certain way don't make it automatically change. You go on to say there will be incidents in a gathering that size but apparently we not allowed to have any incidentst that lead up to murder. Sigh tell that to the man who in a critical but stable condition in the hospital because some woman stab up he splunt for wining on she. Something that was truly unheard of years ago. It would usually be men stabbing or chopping yuh for winin on their woman.

With the revolution of the criminal mentality you will see the advent of all sorts of crime. The way things have been going why don't you all count your lucky stars that is only 5 isolated incidents that happened and not 50 or 500. Stop the damn complaining cause nobody eh doing nothing bout it.

I saw the funniest interview with a tourist (he sounded either English or Australian), his words to the camera were ....... " I am so sorry I ever came down to Trinidad for the Carnival !!! because now I have to keep coming back every year "

CARNIVAL POSTMORTEM:
Well according to your esteemed 'Minister of Carnival' over the next few days it will be decided by the 'stake holders' (I presume she means the mas producers et al) just where future generations will be playing mas; I guess they will answer the question ....... do you really want or need a Carnival Facility.
My question to the Minister (or her predecessor)....... Why wasn't this question asked years ago? Before you tore up the Savannah? before you came up with a design for the facility? even before you decided on a facility at all?
But again, this is Trinidad where they generally put the cart before the horse  , anyway this is a subject for another thread

This is a tad misleading. First off, the lower incidence of violence in Labor Day can be attributed to other factors, mainly the overall decline of violence in NYC. There is also the fact that the authorities, who only tolerate this parade rather than embrace it, are stricter with the ending time of the parade, which I guess is partly due to the Jewish community reclaiming their homes that they had rented out for years, on Eastern Parkway.
There is still violence in the aftermath, such as parties and dances.

As for Carnival, those 5 murders may have taken place during the Carnival time, but how many can be related to Carnival?
When I read that one fella get killed in Behind-God-Back Trace, or the next one dead in Out-Of-The-Way Track, why would I conclude that these killings had anything at all to do with Carnival?

I say the overall violence situation in T&T is unacceptable, but to say that 5 people got killed for Carnival is akin to fearmongering. It is the same mindset that leads some people to think that Toronto's Caribana is a veritable killing field.
I have neighbours who have never attended but every year when the subject comes up they comment on the violence associated with Caribana.
In all the year I have been attending Caribana (which is every year since 1967) there has been 1 murder!
Most of the violence that is attributed to Caribana actually takes place far from any Caribana venue, and in non-Caribana sanctioned events. But as long as the people involved are black, or visiting town for Caribana, the media always tie it in with Caribana.

All that said, can you tell me how many of those 5 murders took place during and within Carnival parades?
