Since 1881

ACP has a long and distinguished history. Founded in 1881 as the Department of Pharmacy of Union University, the College was the vision of Archibald McClure, President of an Albany pharmaceutical firm, and his colleagues.

The College shared facilities with Albany Medical College in an old schoolhouse in downtown Albany until the 1920s, when the schools constructed their own buildings. The College expanded that facility in 1956 and then again in 1982.

In 1995, University Heights Association, Inc. was established to benefit the College and its academic neighbors -- Albany Law School, Albany Medical College and The Sage Colleges. These institutions -- each connected to a central UHA-owned, 30-acre site -- had similar needs for expansion and enhanced services. UHA is focused on these needs and continues to undertake initiatives to enhance the academic mission of each of the four institutions.

In 2000, ACP expanded for the first time into a second building -- the Classroom Building. This exciting move was undertaken following UHA's $4 million renovation of the former Christian Brothers Academy main building, located on the UHA campus. This facility provides academic offices and classroom space for the College and The Sage Colleges.

In 2003, and again with UHA assistance, ACP officially opened its cutting-edge Pharmaceutical Research Institute in the former Bender Hygienic Laboratories on Samaritan Road, on the south edge of campus. In 2004, the College purchased an adjoining property on Samaritan Road from the Episcopal Diocese of Albany and established South Hall, a residence facility for students and home to the College's Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid and Bursar.

Last year, we added a state-of-the-art student center, and more plans for facility expansion are in the works, including a new residence hall at the heart of our expanding campus!

Programs

ACP maintains a reputation as one of the finest pharmacy institutions in the world. The College began with a faculty of three teaching only four courses. Today, there are more than 80 full-time faculty teaching more than 110 courses! New programs developed in recent years to complement the traditional pharmacy curriculum are Bachelor of Science degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biomedical Technology (the latter with concentrations in Cytotechnology and Clinical Laboratory Sciences), and a Certificate Program in Cytotechnology.
