Halo, Manning flew on a Repsol jet from the UK to spain; the GHL jet does not have that kind of range. It was to continue discussion for what is now Train X at Atlantic LNG. That will earn T&T billions of dollars in revenues.

I have learned only two lessons from this trip -
1. The UNC-A is desperate, and
2. Warner has lots of money.
Nelson Mandela is a very intelligent, honest, man of integrity and moral fortitude. I doubt he will endorse the UNC-A, or any other party for that matter.

Incidentally, South Africa is faced with many hardships like T&T, especially crime.

Maccogirl, lets look at the PNM and the UNC for a moment here.....Have you ever sought to do a cost benefit analysis between the two parties, their spending and what benefits they getting in return.....

First of all, Manning and the PNM have a prophetess....how much money yuh think Manning would spend on she to provide illusions....small change....Look at how much UNC spending to hire a private jet for Jack and Bas to go South Africa...to meet who...Mandela and hear nah to bring he here aint going to be cheap eh.....just to give ah speech to people....about freedom and political power....I could only imagine if Mandela comes here, the whole of Trinidad will go to that UNC rally....not to show support for UNC eh....just to see Mandela in the flesh on a platform....

At the end of the day, Manning and the PNM benefitting more by spending money on a prophetess rather than taking expensive flights to meet ah foreign politcian....plus the prophetess giving him the special day to call and win the election....

What Dooks need....for starters he have Gillian Lucky.....the rest speaks for itself.

I really don't know who told you Mandela was coming to T&T you sounding just like the PNM people on the radio Mandela is 90 yrs old and ill who don't know that don;t want to know, some of you just love the old talk over and over geez talk something else nah for a change, you want story talk about the Ramesh revelations tonight on the platform, or talk about what Kamla said the shooting of the LFL flag bearer in his head who is now in critical condition in hospital.

What about the gas tank that someone tried to light by the UNCA office, or why did the DPP drop the charges on the PNM candidate, better yet the arrest of the trade union people today. Over and over is the same crap god man

Former South African president Nelson Mandela will not be returning to T&T with UNC Alliance chairman Jack Warner and UNC leader Basdeo Panday.

However, Panday said the duo would be returning with a message and “a lot of other stuff” from the South African freedom fighter.

Panday and Warner left on a private jet on Wednesday to meet with the South African leader to seek a better understanding how Mandela was able to make the transition from being a prisoner to president…and one of the most revered human rights activist and leader.

Speaking yesterday in a brief telephone interview just before he was about to board the private jet back to T&T from South Africa, Panday described the meeting with Mandela as fruitful.

He refused to divulge what issues were discussed or what transpired among them. “No, I can’t tell you what we talked about. What I can tell you is that we met with Mr Mandela…We will reveal the outcome of the meeting in a news release and photos,” Panday said.

Panday laid to rest speculation that Mandela was returning to T&T. “Mr Mandela is getting on in age. He’s a bit frail so, you know…but, he is all right,” he said.

Mandela is 89. During his last visit to T&T in April 2004, Mandela had announced that it would be his last overseas trip.

Panday and Warner are expected to return to T&T today.

Compare the Newsday. http://newsday.co.tt/news/0,66768.html

FORMER South African President and legendary freedom fighter Nelson Mandela has declined an invitation to come to Trinidad to address UNC Alliance supporters at the November 3 rally at the Aranjuez Savannah.

Mandela’s decision, on the ground of ill health, follow objections raised by the PNM who criticised the UNC A for trying to use the “revered” leader to gain support for the UNC Alliance and the COP who in two letters urged Mandela to resist attempts to draw him into the internal politics of a sovereign country.

Mandela met with UNC leader Basdeo Panday and UNC Alliance chairman Jack Warner at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg at about 11.15 am (TT time) yesterday. The meeting lasted an hour and according to Panday, Mandela gave them advice on how to unite the two major races in Trinidad and Tobago, put an end to hatred in society and bring about a more positive atmosphere in the country. But he turned down their invitation to come to Trinidad.

Contacted yesterday in South Africa, Panday said discussions with Mandela were very useful, informative and will be used as part of the UNC’s strategy to win the General Election.

Panday denied any commercial or ad was shot with Mandela. “We told him we will not reveal the details,” said Panday, who reiterated that the discussions centred on how to unite and put an end to hatred.

When Newsday spoke with Panday, he and Warner were preparing to board the same private jet on which they left Trinidad on Wednesday, to return home. They are expected back in the country at 6 o’clock this morning. Reports circulating yesterday indicated Warner went to South Africa to inspect two football grounds in preparation for the 2010 World Cup which takes place in that country.

“We achieved what we set out to do in South Africa,” Panday said, adding that the only reason Mandela wasn’t coming was because of health. Mandela is 89 and spent over 27 years in prison during the apartheid regime. But speaking at a PNM meeting in Tabaquite on Wednesday night, Planning Minister Camille Robinson-Regis commended Mr Mandela for turning down the invitation by Warner and Panday. She accused Warner of “only bringing foreigners here to tell us who to vote for.” She slammed the “effrontery” of Warner and Panday for trying to use the revered Mandela so grossly and crudely.

“They feel that by associating with people of decency, integrity and respectability, it would rub off. But it can’t. These birds of a feather (Warner and Panday) will undoubtedly continue to flock together,” she said. Robinson-Regis said that even though the people of Trinidad and Tobago greatly respect Mandela, they would not be influenced in the way that they vote by anyone who does not know the politics and the culture of this country. She noted the appearances here on UNC platforms of Americans Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III and the head of the Gandhi Institute in America. And as Panday and Warner jetted off to see Mandela, the Congress of the People wrote to him alerting him to the present general election climate in the country and urged him not to be drawn into the internal politics of a soverign country.

Chairman of the party Roy Augustus told Newsday yesterday that two letters were sent to Mandela on Wednesday morning, mere hours after Warner announced that he and Panday were flying to Johannesburg to woo Mandela to come to Trinidad to speak on their unity platform. Augustus said: “While we cannot tell Mr Mandela what to do or ask him not to get involved in the internal politics here, what we can do and have done is to inform him that the country is going into a general election.”

Referring to Mandela as “the world’s most revered living icon”, Augustus said that the mere thought that the UNC Alliance leaders wanted to bring Mandela to TT must be cause for shock and anger at this outrage.

If the purpose of Mr. Panday's visit to South Africa was to find out how to put an end to conflict and hatred in TnT then this was a waste of a trip!.....I could have given the solution myself.......put some duct tape on Jack's mouth, Bas' mouth and as of last night Kirk's mouth!

The campaign in Central and South Trinidad has just become outright nasty between the COP and the UNCA.......just like we all predicted.

The upshot now is that the UNCA is running a series of ads citing the NACTA polls and saying that the COP is splitting the UNCA vote and will allow the PNM to win. I think that the internal UNCA polling is starting to pick up something even more troubling.....a considerable migration of some of their supporters to the PNM.

I have written before that the negativity of the UNCA campaign is going to have a bit of a reverse effect since the COP will be obliged to fire back so that a mud slinging match will ensue.

All the while the PNM campaign will remain on track and on message.

Case in point was the massive show of support for the PNM in Barrackpore and Tabaquite this week. In both cases the audience was predominantly East Indian and they participated fully in the event. Also, they were not wearing any PNM paraphenalia so one cannot say that this was a totally bused in crowd. They were cheering along just as lustily so one cannot say that they were just there out of curiousity. The PNM has made some serious inroads into the PDP/DLP/ULF/UNC heartland. This is a trend that is going to continue as the "bandwagon" effect continues to take hold.

FIFA.com reports in their version of events (http://fifa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=622736.html#sa+will+great+2010+show+warner) that Jack is looking to be PM

Warner is currently campaigning to become the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) and arrived in South Africa with a delegation which included Basdeo Panday, with whom he is co-leader of the United National Congress Alliance (UNCA) political party.

Warner is the chairman of the UNCA and is leading the party's campaign to win the November 5 general election in Trinidad and Tobago.

I imagine this trip will get expensed to FIFA for the most part rather than the UNC.

Note to Bas and Jack........ Take a lesson in diplomacy a.k.a. how to act classy

In case allyuh to dumb to understand what just happened in South Africa; Mr. Mandella being a man of principle, and understanding the world of diplomacy knows it's not only a 'faux pas' for anyone to go over their head of state of their country to extend an invitation to another head of state or ex head of sate, it also shows how 'uncouth' the person or persons extending the invitation for thinking it is proper to try to 'use' the stature of one such as Mr. Mandela to influence others in an election in some obscure bananna republic (what an insult to the man).

Msrs. Warner and Panday by their actions have not only embarassed themselves, they have also embarrassed the entire country of Trinidad and Tobago. I am sure Mr. Mandella and the people in South Africa who were privy to this action while graceful in their decline (that is what people of substance do) were really insulted that these two bufoons would try to reduce a man of such high esteem to the levels of some for profit entertainer or fly by night celebrity.

My old grandmother usta have ah saying....... when people of no substance or breathing happen to get elevated 'beyond their station', they begin to 'smell themselves'. That certainly is the case with those two idiots; and futher, should the UNC ever win the election....... yuh cud put ah pig in de palace, he'll still be ah hog.

Thank you Mr. Panday and company for proving that 'yuh kar buy class'.

Agreed, the man has achieved a lot in his short lifetime. The methods whereby he achieved that measure of wealth and fame are dubious to say the least though.

I cant say that CM I have no proof that Jack stole anything from anyone, all I know of the man from what people say he is a hard worker, he works long hours and at time people say it is as if he does not sleep. He is know to be a mover and shaker he loves to get things done and not one to sit on something if he knows it needs to be done, what can I say maybe his hours of burning the midnight oil has paid off.

I sure cant say it was from shady dealings that would be unfair, I just admire the man simply because its very difficult for a black man from the Caribbean to make it big like that on the world stage, its a great achievement for a black man coming from Trinidad, I am sure his road was not a easy one at that in getting to that point.

cm103
10-27-2007, 01:21 AM
Well I am basing this based on past incidents with Mr. Warner at the center. Here are a just a few:

The Under 17 world cup in Trinidad. Both of Jack's sons held contracts for transportation, lodging, meals and information technology for the tournament. Judging from their purchases in Miami afterwards they didn't do too bad from that. What type of tendering process was in place? Would that be considered a conflict of interest?

Jack buying broadcast rights for football matches for $1 and reselling them for over 6 figures. The national team still can't get paid what they were promised though.

The entire world cup ticket debacle. Who owned the travel company that Trinis had to buy their tickets from?

FIFA also did fine him and his family over $1US million for profiteering from the world cup ticket scandal. It is runmoured that the reason he has not been dismissed from FIFA is that he holds the key votes that won Sepp Blatter office.

Points like these are hard to ignore.

From the observable evidence, unlike you, I have come to the conclusion that he has used unethical if not illegal means to get ahead. I have also come to the conclusion that I cannot trust him. Therefore I will not be supporting him and his party based on the fact that this violates my principles.

Just fix sorry but all this talk of violating my principles is crap you really want to tell me that you feel all the COP aspiring politicians clean as a whistle? If you really believe that I sorry for you. Maybe the COP members have not been in the limelight as such before so things about them are not really know, but am sure if they do happen to get into power dirt will come out.

There are many businessmen in the front line and back ground of the COP that people can hmmm too, so if you are a stickler for principles as you say you are there is a element of contradiction that statement , don't be so willing to take all this feel good talk on the surface, that is just a platform image to get your vote, not that I am saying don't support the COP what I am saying is all that glitter may not necessarily be gold.

They all have baggage UNCA, PNM and the COP all we the public can do is HOPE that whoever gets to run this country do the best they can and what is right for the people of T&T, but don't base your vote on principles or trust of these men or women. If you prefer one party over the other great that is what democracy is all about you have a choice and a right to exercise that choice, but principles and trust nope those words just don't sit right with politicians.

I cannot agree with you there. While you should take everything a politician says with a grain of salt, there is a difference between voting for those that stand for integrity and and those who made it this far by shady means. Which one would you rather have running the country?

Let me put this another way. If a man is known for backroom deals and another is known for his clean, open way of dealing with things, which one is more likely to continue their ways once in power?

While I agree with you 100% unfortunately we all know that 'nice guys' always finish last, especially in countries like Trinidad where the majority of the populace have been indoctrinated to believe that fraud, lies, boball and payoffs are all part of the way 'legitimate' business is done.
Take a look at some of the post on this and other forums, you will see how vehemently supporters of these crooks defend them. In reading some of the posts I genuinely feel sorry for these poor saps, especially when they talk about how others are being victimized not realizing that they too are victims of these con men. Well yes I was but I didn't mention any 'nice guy'. Lets just get something else straight, there is nothing or nobody near to God in my eyes.

Dookeran is a politician who has lived his life in thee public eye. Is he currently under any investigation for corruption, impropriety or misbehaviour in public office? Panday, Jack and Ramesh already show their true colours and they not pretty at all. Talk about crook? Look at them.

If you don't want to talk about the COP standing up for integrity then fine. The dealings of the PNM and UNC make them seem like an shining example without the need for words. If you could see that happening and still go vote for them then fine, thats your choice. I on the other hand refuse to be taken again by the same jokers.

Can we also drop the talk about Panday wanting unity for the opposition as well? We all know that's a front....well most of us know.

Fifa official 'makes up' visit with Mandela

But the Sunday Times has established that Warner did not meet Mandela after he refused to sign an agreement that the meeting would not be used for political purposes.

Here is the article :

Fifa official ‘makes up’ visit to Mandela
Buddy Naidu Published:Oct 28, 2007

Jack Warner, the controversial vice-president of world football body Fifa was left red-faced this week after being shown the door by former President Nelson Mandela.

Warner undertook a flying visit to seek Mandela’s endorsement in his bid to become prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago, where general elections are scheduled for November 5.

At an election rally in his home country on Tuesday, Warner told supporters of his party, the United National Congress Alliance, that he and party co-founder, Basdeo Panday, were to meet with Mandela.

But the Sunday Times has established that Warner did not meet Mandela after he refused to sign an agreement that the meeting would not be used for political purposes.

Despite this, media reports in Trinidad and Tobago and the official Fifa website give the impression that Warner had met Mandela.

A Fifa press release said: “Fifa vice-president Jack Warner paid a whistle-stop visit to SA today to meet with Nelson Mandela as well as executives of the country’s Premier Soccer League [PSL].

“The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Johannesburg offices to see South Africa’s revered 89-year-old statesman.”

However, only Panday and another other member of Warner’s entourage paid a “brief courtesy call” to the former President.

Mandela’s spokesman, Zelda la Grange, said yesterday: “Mr Warner did not see Mr Mandela as he was not in agreement that Mr Mandela could not be approached to endorse an election campaign or a candidacy.”

She added that there had been “no political discussions” with Panday.

Yesterday the Trinidad and Tobago Express reported that Warner, at the launch of the party’s manifesto at the Mandela Hall in Macoya, also announced that the public was in for a big surprise at the party’s rally next Saturday, where an electronic message from Mandela would be displayed.

Warner has been president of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) for almost two decades and has sat on the Fifa executive since 1983.

During last year’s World Cup in Germany he was fingered in a 1-million ticketing scandal and was found guilty of violating Fifa’s code of ethics.

He escaped punishment after a Fifa-sanctioned audit by Ernst & Young but his son, who was the managing director of the travel company, was ordered to repay the money in a secret deal.

Mandela presents Panday, Warner with gift

Sunday, October 28 2007

UNC Alliance Chairman Jack Warner and UNC leader Basdeo Panday have been presented with a gift of a wooden hand-crafted item, depicting a mother and child from former South African President Nelson Mandela.

Panday and Warner met with the former freedom fighter at the Mandela Foundation in Johannesburgh on Thursday. The gift was shown to those who attended the launch of the UNC Alliance manifesto at the Mandela Foundation, Centre of Excellence yesterday.

Warner said that the meeting with Mandela was inspirational and added that both he and Panday were given advice on how to deal with hatred and how to unite the races. He said that the message sent by Mandela to the people of Trinidad and Tobago will be revealed shortly. He said that Mandela is not in the best of health and the trip to South Africa was centred on getting advice from Mandela on how to unite the races in the interest of the country.

JACK WARNER did not meet with Nelson Mandela in his whirlwind tour to South Africa last week, according to a story published in the South African Times yesterday.

Warner has already denied that the purpose of his whirlwind trip to South Africa last week was to get Mandela to come to Trinidad.

According to the story, which quotes Zelda la Grange, Mandela’s spokesman, Warner did not meet with Mandela.

The story did say, however, that Panday and “another member of Warner’s entourage” did in fact meet with Mandela, but that this meeting was a “brief courtesy call”. However, La Grange is also quoted as saying that there had been “no political discussions” with Panday.

Phone calls to both Warner and Panday were left unanswered yesterday.

At a UNCA public rally in St Helena on Friday Warner said that he did not go to South Africa to campaign for votes, but was there on FIFA business.

Mandela and his people would have been forewarned. The COP will take some credit for that with their two letters, but while listening to Conrad Enil last week, some callers expressed some concern that "dey going and use him", "dey want tuh bring him back tuh fool people". His response was "We have our people over there". To that he came in for some verbal abuse even accused of being too calm.

"Buh how you dead so?".... "We need somebody with more energy".

You know what. I live in Botswana and am in and out of South Africa on a regular basis (weekly). South Africa won the World Rugby Tournament last week and Mr. Mandela was unable to attend. Currently at 89 his doctors are of the belief that he should take it easy, so he no longer travels abroad. He spends his days managing his foundation and doing charity work. He is an ardent and outspoken advocate for fairness and openness in public life and politics. There have been recent issues where his name was used in campaigns within South Africa and he was not happy with that. Even within the ANC, the ruling party in South Africa he has been silently behind the scenes trying to bring peace to their politics.

In conclusion Mr. Mandela and his people will not lie about things like that. Jack and Bas need to be careful, look for an easier elder states man to work for the campaign.

The English view is that they invented football so they have rights to hold that event at any time in England. Jack is the only man that spoke his mind about that one for Christ sakes is it not called The World Cup, so let all the countries of the world have fair share at hosting this event, don't see the problem there with that view.

Why do you feel all the bad English press on Jack because he told them his view on how he saw it, but some of you so interested in cussing Jack on here you never look at the bigger picture, well I say if you have such a big problem with Jack join the British and keep the world cup only in England and tell Jack to haul he tail

It is not as bad as other countries .But it could be so much better .
What I have observed , putting aside elections , we all get along .Some better than others .
However I am seeing a trend that we may be slowly moving our from the issue of race factoring in election. This auger well for everyday life for all .
But it still too slow to my liking

Nelson Mandela steers clear of Trinidad general elections 8-)

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, october 29, 2070 - Nelson Mandela took a brief courtesy call from members of a political party in Trinidad and Tobago but did not endorsed either in the upcoming general elections, a spokesperson for the South African politican icon said.

Jack Warner, a vice-president of FIFA - the world governing body for football, and Basdeo Panday of the United National Congress (UNC) were among those who visiting South Africa with the intention of paying a courtesy call on the former South African president in Johanesburg last week.

Press reports in Trinidad suggested that the UNC team was seeking a political endorsement from Mandela.

In a news conference on their return to Trinidad at the weekend, Warner was asked if it was possible that Mandela would be giving his endorsement to the UNC Alliance in a video-taped or written message.

The Trinidad Express quoted Warner as saying: "That is only part of it and as this whole weeks unfolds, you will see the rest of it."

However, Mandela's spokesman, Zelda la Grange, said Friday: "Mr Warner did not see Mr Mandela as he was not in agreement that Mr Mandela could not be approached to endorse an election campaign or a candidacy."

She added that there had been "no political discussions" with Panday.

A Fifa news release, published on its website, had suggested that as part of Warner's whistlestop tour to South Africa that he was one of the people who visited Mandela.

The Sunday Times newspaper of South Africa however reported that Warner refused to sign an agreement that the meeting would not be used for political purposes and was therefore not invited to meet with Mandela.

Well if Panday and Warner did not get to see Mandela, what other purpose they could have gone to South Africa for....clearly this is a case of drinking island punch under an umbrella in the hot sun......what a waste of money eh....with all what Jack Warner have, notice the PNM never recruited Jack as a financier for the party....because all the PNMites believe that the money coming from a questionable source........

I would think someone must of seen them doing so if not well I guess the next talk will be Jack and Bas sneak in a camera and made an ad unknown to Mandela's people

Trini's have nothing to do they even taking the time to send messages to the SA Times to cuss Jack and Panday imagine that, real issues in this country and they have time to write about Jack, for what cause?? The out cry from some English people is Africa should not be host of the 2010 world cup, they putting all kind of ta ta on soccer news about Africa have crime, they will never be ready, the place have no hotels, it backward, that is a cause to discuss not if Jack and Panday went to Africa if you all so concerned about Mandela and Africa.

Here we have Trini's adding to this nonsense with talk about Jack and making this thing a pappy show all over the Internet to the eyes of the world, you don't have to like Jack Warner but god he is a Trini , a son of our soil and people going to these lengths for what?? We have the example set in Trinidad & Tobago already, so I think we should endorse Mr. Panday for Minister Extrodinare - President.

The message JP? Ah hear dey really did meet and Mandela told them...
"I was able to unite the races because I did not get a scholarship for my children from a large conglomerate. I did not give my son tickets to sell. Winnie always supported me from the ground not on the platform. I knew when to retire from politics so that my message did not get diluted nor did I lose credibility. I did not go around boasting that I was a jailbird. I was imprisoned for standing up for the rights of my people, not for failing to declare my bank account. I did not attack my people for progressing. I was happy for them and did not denegrate them by calling them 'knife and fork indians', while that was who my family and I were."

Fifa official ‘makes up’ visit to Mandela
Buddy Naidu Published:Oct 28, 2007

http://www.thetimes.co.za/PrintEdition/ ... ?id=598437 (http://www.thetimes.co.za/PrintEdition/News/Article.aspx?id=598437)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The thread, its is full of nonsense the fact is that Bas and Jack went to Africa, the times news items has been re posted over and over on here for what reason anyone can guess, they went they back home made their ad and no big thing.

No one on here went on that trip and all we have is one set of speculation of who closed the door in whose face, who get kicked out, one set of nonsense. The UNCA has their political strategy weather it will work for them that is their business, you may not agree with it but its their plan to reshape, build of design as they choose end of story.

NAME-DROPPING: This is how Mandela’s portrait was used by Jack Warner’s party in Trinidad

Warner takes Mandela pretence a step further
BUDDY NAIDU (The Times)

Published:Nov 04, 2007

Controversial Fifa bigwig Jack Warner could find himself in more hot water with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The Fifa vice-president, who is campaigning to become the prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago in general elections to be held tomorrow, had used images of himself outside the foundation’s head office for a TV advert.

Last week the Sunday Times revealed how, during a whistle-stop visit to Johannesburg with his United National Congress Alliance co-founder, Basdeo Panday, he “made up” a visit with former President Nelson Mandela.

The two were seeking an endorsement from the statesman. But Warner was refused an audience with Mandela after he refused to sign a confidentiality agreement that the meeting would not be used for political purposes.

This week the revelation that he never met Mandela during the visit made headline news in the Caribbean island, with Warner and his party being mocked by opposition parties and the media about their South African trip.

Warner admitted in the Trinidad Guardian on Tuesday that he did not meet Mandela but said Panday visited him as a “Fifa delegate”.

Panday is not a Fifa official.

“I took Mr Panday to meet Mr Mandela. They spoke and that was that. You all can publish what you want ,” Warner was quoted as saying.

On Monday night an advert, filmed in SA, was shown on local TV stations in which Panday describes his meeting with Mandela as inspirational. It shows Panday and Warner walking through a South African museum as well as outside the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The Sunday Times can also reveal that Panday is the subject of a criminal investigation by authorities in Trinidad and Tobago and is currently out on bail after he allegedly failed to declare millions stashed in bank accounts in England. How he came into such large sums of cash is also being probed .

On Tuesday night he again made headlines after insinuating, during a youth show on television, that marijuana should be legalised.
