With oil at $90US a barrel our booming economy is being tenuously supported by some very volatile market forces over which we have no control. Trinidad experienced peak oil production IN THE 70'S and has been on a steady decline since then. Our great refinery with its never ending barrel of woes is unable to refine a large proportion of the oil that is currently being produced in Trinidad. Lack of foresight by the upper management of the state oil company has left us in a predicament where we will now have to export our heavy and extra heavy crudes to be refined (at giveaway prices) and with the new shortfall in local input to the refinery we will be forced to IMPORT foreign crude to replace the indiginous shortfall. We will not be able to economically operate the refinery if we have to import crude at $90US a barrel!!!
Our great Geolopoliticians in the PNM and their national oil company appointees either got things horribly wrong or are purposesfully shuttling us back to the days where the "White Man" again was required to call the shots in order to run a successful oil company! Maybe Patrick have a tabanca for the days when he used to work for the "white men" in Texaco as a Geologist, where he NEVER FOUND A DROP OF OIL!

I believe that the peak oil production in T&T actually occurred in 1977. However, oil refining is just one of the infrastructural activities that cannot be handled properly. Let us face it, without oil and gas, we are nothing. I believe that the government should be actively promoting research into alternative sources of energy and break our dependence on oil sooner rather than later. In this regard, why not sugar cane, solar power, and wind energy? T&T is in a unique position to harness energy from all these sources. I suspect that we'll have to wait for more dire warnings before waking up and smelling the coffee.

But then we would have to steal costumes. Or if we wanted to remain legit, kidnap for ransom and use the money to buy a costume.
You gotta love the PNM era.
