I have always maintained that Manning is no different to Panday. If he can' have his way completely, then mash up the Party. Now why he give opposition parties the time to unite when he knows that unity between the UNCA and the COP will beat the PNM?
Prime Minister Patrick Manning has said he gave the opposition parties all the time to unite before calling an election date.
"I gave them all the time to get together but they were unable to do so and if they don't get together don't blame me. I gave them all the time they wanted," he said.

Yeah, Skl has hit the nail on the head...
The PNM hasn't been this strong for a long time. Today, they really don't have to deal with any opposition parties. The UNCA and CoP are basically fighting each other for that right. The race is on for who will become the main opposition party, the election has already been won sadly...

...the Pastor may yet, through sheer arrogance and stupidity, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory....

The man seems so be so confident of his support base that he'll willing to ruffle feathers. Even as i watch the casino workrs protest and the PNM supporters at Balisier House protesting, I still think when push come to shove they going to the polls and voting PNM bec they wont risk having another party in power. I guess Manning knows that.
Manning has no competition from the opposition once they are fragmented so he can clean out the competition from within his own party too [oh how he wishes he could find a loop hole to get rid of Rowley] so he could have absolue power.

We will get a 2/3rds PNM majority with a contingent of PNM MPs made up of yes men with no political stature, who will vote whatever constitution Manning wants for himself. It seems that Trinidad after all was not politically mature enough to handle democracy, and 40 odd years after independence we are back racing towards full banana republic / one family dictatorship status.

I don't think that the PNM is very strong right now. They were much stronger in 1991. It is just that the opposition is divided.

I disagree with the underlined as I have never seen "Mannin" assasinate characters publicly as Panday has then turn around and accept them the same way.
As for giving the opposition time to unite? Dookeran was right when he said "Mannin" playing psychological games but still spends 75% of his speeches attacking what "Mannin" said every week.
