Is offering guests food to eat a cultural thing?

Is it part of our culture as trinis that whenever somebody come to your house the first thing u ask them is if they want something to eat? Ever notice that? U just reach and already dey done pull out sada roti and aloo for u? On TV the mericans always offering guests a drink, we does full dem with food. And my mother does pack up baigan for u to carry home too (she HATE baigan and my father always buying some bec he LOVES it).

Or is it a trini Indian thing? I asking that distinction bec now that ah think about it, meh Negro friends doh offer meh food. I does only get sweet drink when ah go by them. Hmmm...

And people in the country side wud give you something from the land when you leaving.
In ny my indian friend went with me by an aunt and first thing she offered him food and he wasn't used to tht.

Ha ha! It's a cultural thing that people from all walks of life do. some do and some does not. In my parents house they use to hold down a fowl from the yard to cook as soon as family reach. Now with telephone, meh Ma dos say "make sure and let me no ahead of time wen yuh coming, so ah go be prepared".....she meen common fowl, dhal and rice and greens..nah....yuh no how it is.
I offer food and drink too because yuh never no who and where the angel come from and in what form to your house .

i think it's a generational thing.
i find older people (indo, afro, white, chinee, syrian) are quick to offer you food etc.
younger persons - particularly in families where both the husband and wife have full time jobs may not be so inclined.

My family used to offer yuh drinks but if yuh is a good friend then is a plate ah food. My mother still can't come to terms with cooking just for herself now that we all have moved out. Exactly. One of my friends was invited for a cup of tea by a neighbour and they had to walk with their own cookies. Mind you, she had hosted about 4 BBQs and only one invited her back for a cup of tea. After that she said no more.

As a child visiting people with my grandparents, I could be offered all sorts but we had to watch our grandparents to get the nod of approval before we accepted. I grew up knowing that you offer food to guests. I still try to do this.

I'm the sort that expects you to call ahead to give me some notice of your visit, at least an hour. That gives me time to clean up first if I haven't done my chores for the day and put a meal on the cooker to cook. My family definitely aren't hindu. Living in the UK I've learn't that some guests don't want to be offered food at every visit. They might have special dietary requirements that I know nothing about or want to cut down on eating too much. I cook for my family and close friends becuase I know what they eat. Th vegetarians get veggie meals and there's meat dishes for the omnivores.

For xmas an old neighbour whom all the kids were blackmailed and threatened to go by used to share sorrel and black cake. Well me I never liked fruit cake or cake for that matter so i was safe from de horror that was de cake experience. there was a lot of black toothed snickering going on during de cake torture.

it was a most uncomfortable evening. Nice people to this day, but I have come to realise this is standard practice in their country. I guess when you reciprocate it eventually evens itself out. Like here at tgif its so expensive and in ny I been there a few times and its a cheaper place and not big a deal to go like when people going here.

My friend is mad like hell. Her cousin and family from London came to visit her for 2 weeks last summer. They did not even spent a cent like helping out in the groceries or restaurant. Last year when she spent 2 weeks there she helped out in groceries and paid most of the restaurants. She was so embarrassed that she told none until the other cousin wants to visit her next summer. This cousin never offered to take her out or invited her for lunch while she was there. She is looking for an excuse to turn him down. No a cultural thing.

Make sure yuh wash yuh hands eh.......take up the top bara and pick up HALF of the channa and roll the bara (kinda like a taco :? ) .........small enough to fit in yuh mouth :mrgreen: ..........take two bites :mrgreen: and proceed to second bara and repeat previous steps :ugeek:
