View Full Version : As Written At Prashanti Nilayam Today
Let us hope that today's thought for the day originating from Prashanti Nilayam is inspiring and that where transformation is needed it will serve to help. Each day's message can be found below each message as shown below. This introduction may be repeated with each cut and paste message. Hopefully, the same repetitious message does not violate any of the rules of the forum.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
When a sculptor transforms a piece of rock into a beautiful idol to be worshipped in a shrine, what was inert and worthless becomes sacred. In the same manner, everything which is petty and worldly should be transformed in course of time into something sacred and divine. That is the real transformation that every man must aspire for.

How ordinary and true, yet profound when someone else says it. It is something we know from practice, but we fail at it when it comes to spiritual health.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
One has to be slow and steady on the spiritual path. Adhere to a regular routine. Just as a doctor prescribes a certain fixed measure or weight of a drug and warns you that anything more is harmful, so too, have some limit for your spiritual exercises. Do not overdo them or perform them casually and without care. Just as the medicines have to be taken at a particular time of the day and a specified number of times a day, so also the Japa (chanting the Lord's name) and Dhyana (meditation) have to be carried out regularly at specified timings every day.

All are embodiments of love from that one source we know as Baba.
Date:Wednesday, October 24, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
I am the embodiment of Love; Love is my instrument. There is no creature without Love, even the lowliest loves itself and its 'self' is nothing but God. There are no atheists, though they may dislike God or refuse Him. They are like the people affected by malarial fever who dislike sweets or like the diabetic patients who refuse to have anything to do with sweets! Those who preen themselves as atheists now will one day, when their illness is gone, relish God and revere Him.

Wow, what a profound statement about meditation. I never would have guessed it from all that we have learned about meditation.
Date:Thursday, October 25, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
It may be possible to teach a person the posture, the position of feet or hands, neck, head or back, the style of breathing or its speed. But the meditation is a function of the inner self; it motivates deep subjective quiet, the employing of the mind and filling oneself with the light that emerges from the divine spark within. This is a discipline that no text book can teach and no class can communicate.

Detachment appears to be a theme in Baba's teachings. It is probably the key to developing humility and surrender as are taught in most rligions of the world. The three most important kinds of attachment that must be given up to make room for humility and surrender for spiritual progress, according to Baba, are family attachments that hinder forward movement, attachment to material goods which often gives one personal identity and the attachment to reputation, what we often hold on to for name and fame.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
All relationships are incidental and temporary. Hence, one must perform one's duties in the world with detachment. Even when involved in worldly life, one has to recognise the relationships between mother and son, husband and wife, brother and sister etc., as being intrinsically impermanent. Separation is inevitable sooner or later. But, between man and God there can never be any separation. Even if you forget God, He will not forget you. Therefore, develop faith in God and yearn for His Love.

This sounds like complete surrender to God.
Date:Saturday, October 27, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
There are three things which one should keep in mind, namely, "I will not think of anything except God; I will not do anything without the permission of God and I will have my attention completely fixed on God at all times." It is only when one accepts and puts into practice these three statements that the Lord will look after one's welfare. However, one does not care to follow God's injunctions and instead questions God as to why he does not look after him or her.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God's heart is said to be softer than butter. Yet, however soft the butter may be, it needs warmth to melt. Similarly, in order to melt the compassionate heart of the Lord, the devotee should develop the required warmth by his yearning and Sadhana (spiritual discipline). He should have intense longing for His mercy and grace. When the child cries, will the mother tarry, assessing or analyzing the tune of the cry? Similarly, it is enough if you pray to God in all earnestness. That burning desire is the only Sadhana that easily melts and moves the Lord's heart.

Maya or ignorance is also another form of God, and like the husk of the rice, it too must be removed for the light or grace of God to shine.
Monday, October 29, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
One who is engaged in the battle of life needs the armour of spirituality. With this invincible armour he can face any situation. If instead of donning this spiritual armour, he cloaks himself in ignorance, he will be haunted by fear and anxiety. As long as rice is covered by husk it cannot be consumed. Likewise, man cannot experience true bliss until he gets rid of the cloak of ignorance. Man must hence develop the quality of forbearance. Through forbearance and spiritual practices, gradually the shackles of tendencies resulting from past actions can be broken.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Surrender the ego, dedicate every moment and every act to Him who has assured mankind that He will ensure liberation from pain and evil. When asked where God is, people point towards the sky or to some far and distant region; no wonder then that He does not manifest Himself! Realize that He is in you, with you, behind you and all around you; and He can be seen and felt everywhere. Realize also that He is all-merciful, eager and anxious to fulfill your prayers, if they arise from a pure heart.

It is said that our Hindu scriptures say that man is born divine, and by self inquiry and intelligence he comes to know it.
Date:Wednesday, October 31, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The greatest sin man commits is to forget his Divinity. Failing to recognise his true nature, he considers himself as a separate individual and fills his mind with desire and hatred. We should not look upon human existence as something pitiful or weak and powerless. Man is the embodiment of the Divine; he is Sath-Chith-Ananda (Being-Awareness-Bliss). The Divine in him is always radiating light and bliss. However, because of the veil of bad thoughts that covers his mind, he is unable to experience this bliss.

Yes, we hear the concept of spirituality bandied around to mean all kinds of things.
Date:Thursday, November 01, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
People imagine that spirituality means meditating on God, bathing in sacred waters and visiting holy shrines, but this is not the correct meaning of spirituality. Spirituality means destroying the animal nature in man and awakening him to his divine consciousness. Spirituality implies recognizing that one’s manifold capacities emanate from the Spirit and not from the mind, then utilizing them for achieving spiritual strength. It means acknowledging that all powers come from the Divine.

Electricity found in man can set the world on fire and destroy all of us, but can also be used to set man on the spiritual journey of peace and love.
Date:Friday, November 02, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Electricity is found everywhere in nature, but it can be tapped and put to use only through certain contrivances designed by man. The Atma Shakti (spiritual power) that is present everywhere is stored in the body and passes through the thin wires or nerves and illumines and directs activity. These activities have to be oriented towards Ananda (spiritual bliss) and not attachment to temporary pleasures. The life principle that flows as intelligence through every cell and nerve is also a reflection of the Atma.

The sun is the best and highest visible manifestation of God's power some may say, and deserves to be worshipped as God.
Date:Saturday, November 03, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The sun derives its energy and effulgence from the same cosmic source that accounts for the power of the human mind and body. There is no greater power than this. This boundless power is being recognised and exercised by each according to the level of his development. Since man has the ability to manifest the latent divinity in himself, he is described as a manifestation of God. Humanness consists in manifestation of what is hidden and invisible to the eye.

During the Divali celebrations we Hindus burn the fire of love in our hearts not the fire of anger which must be extinguished for the flame of love to remain permanently in our hearts.
Date:Sunday, November 04, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
From time to time, the Divine power assumes numerous forms. In devotees, it shines as the Jnana-Agni (fire of wisdom). In non-devotees, it burns as Krodha-Agni (the fire of anger) or the Kama-Agni (fire of desire). Man today has this fire (of anger, etc) in his heart and has become a victim of fear and delusions. All other types of fire subside in due course of time, but these fires (of anger, etc.) never completely cease. They may flare up at any moment. How, then, are these fires to be extinguished once for all? Vairagya (detachment) and Prema (love) are the two requisites to extinguish these fires. It is only through Prema (love) that man can acquire peace.

In meaningless acquisitions and meaningless achievements-much food for thought.
Date:Monday, November 05, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Each one has come embodied into this world of joy and grief, of growth and decay in order to discover the way home, to get back to the source from which he has strayed into this wilderness. This has to be done within the allotted time of our life span. But, man is attracted by the phantom lights and he ignores the call of destiny. His senses lead him on and on, deeper and deeper into the maze until he dies with a moan instead of with a smile. The precious years between birth and death are wasted in worthless acquisitions and meaningless achievements.

Date:Tuesday, November 06, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man is mortal and the Divine is immortal. In the mortal human being, there is the immortal Divine Spirit. In the field of the heart, there is a Kalpatharu (wish-fulfilling tree). The tree is surrounded by bushes and briars. When these are removed, the tree will become visible. This wish-fulfilling tree is within each person, but it is encompassed by the bad qualities in man. When these qualities are eliminated, the celestial tree will be recognised. This is the Sadhana (spiritual exercise) that each one has to perform. This is not the quest for something new. It is to experience what is yours. The entire cosmos is within you.

Home Date:Wednesday, November 07, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man strives to provide himself with food, clothing and housing for the sake of the body. He must also provide himself with something to keep the mind healthy and happy. It is the mind that conditions the body. The mind is an instrument by which one can liberate oneself or ruin oneself. The mind must become the servant of the intellect and not the slave of the senses.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
From the very name of today's festival - Deepavali, it can be inferred that the Divine effulgence is manifest in it. Deepavali means "the array of lights." "Thamasomaa jyotirgamaya" (Lead me from darkness to light) is an Upanishadic prayer. This means that where there is darkness light is needed. What is this darkness? Sorrow is one form of darkness. Lack of peace is another. Disappointment is one form of darkness. Lack of enthusiasm is yet another. All these are different forms of darkness. To get rid of the darkness of sorrow, you have to light the lamp of happiness. To dispel the darkness of disease, you have to install the light of health. To get over the darkness of losses and failures, you have to usher in the light of prosperity.

The spiritual vibrations produced by Bhajans confer great joy both on those who sing them and on those who listen to them. Bhajans remove all negative thoughts, soothe the nerves, purify the mind and fill the body and the heart with sweet love for the divine. As one sings Bhajans, the mind is saturated with God Consciousness and a great ecstasy wells up from within. No mental or intellectual effort is called for, as there is no need to understand anything while uttering the holy names of God and singing His glory. The singing and the atmosphere created by Bhajans takes one beyond the realms of the body, mind and intellect and helps to establish communion with the Higher Self (consciousness) within.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
All that you cannot see, hear or understand cannot be ruled out as non-existent. Even if you flash a powerful light in front of a blind man, he will only see darkness, because he does not have the eyes to see the light. Likewise, persons having no faith will not perceive God even if you show God to them. They do not have the eyes to see divinity and they proclaim that there is no divinity. A blind man can neither see his body nor describe his looks, but it does not follow that he has no body.

Date:Monday, November 12, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Goodness, compassion, tolerance – through these virtues one can perceive the Divinity in oneself and in others. Softness of heart is often condemned as weakness, cowardice and want of intelligence; they say that the heart has to be hardened against pity and charity, but that way lies war, destruction and downfall. Love alone confers lasting happiness and peace. Sharing can alone reduce grief and multiply joy. People are born to share, to serve, to give and not to grab.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man is a part of the human community. Mankind is a part of nature. Nature is a limb of God. Man has not recognised these inter-relationships. Today men are forgetting their obligations. The Cosmos is an integral organism of interrelated parts. When each one performs his duty, the benefits are available to all. Man is entitled only to perform his duties and not to the fruits thereof. Man is a kind of stage-director of what goes on in Nature. But forgetting his responsibilities, man fights for rights. It is foolish to fight for rights without discharging one's duties. All the chaos and conflicts in the world are due to men forgetting their duties. If everyone discharge their duties diligently, the world will be peaceful and prosperous.

The right attitude of the devotee should be one of total surrender. As one devotee declared, “I am offering to you the heart which you gave me. I have nothing I can call my very own. All are yours. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
There is no greater Sadhana (spiritual exercise) than service. Service is the principle means for acquiring divine grace. Without being a devoted follower, you cannot become a worthy leader. If you are not willing to do work, you cannot attain divinity. Each one has to realize this truth. Service to society is the highest good. It is Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Non-violence that give happiness. These are the five principles that sustain life. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Visions are only reflections of divine vibrations in the mind, aroused by Sadhana (spiritual practice). They are milestones, signposts; they happen on the road to the goal. They do not, they cannot accompany you right to the end. You will have to travel alone and overcome obstacles. Date:Monday, November 19, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
This visible universe is made up of three Gunas (Sathva, Rajas and Thamas). This is the reason for describing the cosmos as 'Sthree'. The term 'Sthree' has three components: “Sa", "Tha" and "Ra". "Sa" signifies the Sathva Guna. This comprises qualities like forbearance, compassion, and love. "Tha" signifies the Thamo Guna which includes qualities like modesty, bashfulness, fear and patience. "Ra" signifies the Rajo Guna represented by qualities such as courage, sacrifice and the adventurous spirit. Every being born in the world has feminine qualities. Merely on the basis of the physical form, a distinction is made between men and women. The three qualities in the term 'Sthree' are to be found both in men and women.

Date:Wednesday, November 21, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The duration of life is under the control of He who gave life in the first place, the Creator. It does not depend on the calories of food consumed or the quality of drugs that are injected, or the qualification of the physician who prescribes the medicines. The chief causes of ill-health and death are fear and loss of Faith. If one concentrates on the Atma (soul) that is beyond diminution, senility and destruction, one can conquer Death. The future of a nation depends on its youth. The strength of the youth lies in their spirit of patriotism. The primary duty of the youth is to render service to the society. The physical and mental strength of the youth is the foundation on which a nation is built. Wake up from the slumber of selfishness and narrow-mindedness and resolve to serve the nation. Perform all activities keeping the esteem and honour of the nation uppermost in your heart. It is unbecoming of the youth to forget divinity and the goal of life, and to waste time in physical and materialistic pursuits. The true manner of living is in bypassing the mind and being always in the full awareness that it is from the Spirit (ananda maya kosha) alone that everything about us emerges, and nothing else. The five koshas unravel who we are, and when we always view who we are from inside out we live in the Anandamaya Kosha from where we learn to lIve in the Spirit and be forever healthful and happy. When we get stuck in only one of the five Koshas our life is dominated by that Kosha.
THAUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man is the embodiment of Sath-Chith-Ananda (Being-Awareness-Bliss). THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Detachment, faith and love – these are the pillars upon which peace rests. Of these, faith is crucial, for without it all spiritual discipline is empty. Detachment alone can make spiritual discipline effective, and love is what leads one quickly to God. Faith feeds the agony of separation from God; detachment canalises it along the path of God, and love lights the way. God will grant you what you need and deserve; there is no need to ask, no reason to grumble. Be content. Nothing can happen against His will.

The Vedas have held forth the message of people living in amity, striving together for common ends and sharing the fruits of their co-operative efforts. They have also proclaimed the omnipresence of the Divine. The cosmic form of the divine encompasses every being in the universe. The Lord is only concerned about how much we care for others and not for him.
Date:Tuesday, November 27, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Devotion to the Lord is really a form of discipline for reaching the goal. The seeker should not stop with the acquisition of devotion, nor pay so much attention to the love he has for the Lord, but rather on the love and grace the Lord bestows on him. One should always be eager to find out what behaviour and what actions will be most pleasing to the Lord. Inquire about that, yearn for that, and carry out the things that will secure that objective. But people do not generally follow this ideal. They pay more attention to the love that the devotee has for the Lord and, in the process, do not pay much attention to the righteousness and the work that the Lord appreciates. Whatever a devotee does, plans or observes should draw down the grace of God. One should not be subject to one’s own will but be in accordance with His Will. The devotee should test every thought and feeling on the touchstone of the Lord’s declared preferences.

As is said in Hinduism, namasmarana with love is the means. Baba says It is like driving a car even with all the distractions on the way. As long as the goal post is is planted, it will be reached with just a little effort.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The chief means by which you can detach your mind from the distractions of the world and attach yourself to the search for God are : Yoga and Thyaga. Kama (desire) has to be got rid of by Thyaga (renunciation) and Rama (God) has to be secured by Yoga (the conjunction of all your faculties for a spiritual purpose). Desire dulls the intelligence; it perverts judgement; it sharpens the appetite of the senses; it lends a false lure to the objective world. When desire disappears or is concentrated on God, intelligence shines in its pristine splendour; and that splendour reveals the God present within and outside. That is 'Atma-Sakshatkara' or Self-realization.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
You should be prepared to face every challenge of life with courage. Courage is the key to success. Life is bound to offer all kinds of difficulties, but you should not quail before them. Face every ordeal with fortitude. Nowadays, people get easily depressed and confused when they encounter difficulties. Depression leads to frustration. This is not the way to face the challenges of life. You should develop the courage to go through the adventure of life. Adhering to truth, cherishing love in your heart, cultivating fortitude, face life with firm determination and steady vision. Such a life will result in fulfilment. The rewards of life can only be got through strenuous effort.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
You have to make your love pure. To do so, you must develop Kshama (forbearance), which implies remaining serene, patient and observing self-restraint under all circumstances, doing good to all, even to those who may want to harm you. There is nothing greater than Kshama. Kshama is equivalent to truth itself. It is the heart of Dharma (righteousness). It is non-violence in practice. Kshama is contentment, compassion; truly, it is everything in all the worlds. Only when you have developed Kshama will you be able to attain the Lord.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
When a severe pain torments you, the doctor gives you a morphine injection and then you do not suffer any more. In the same way, the grace of God acts to take away the element of suffering from the Karma (consequences of past actions) which you have to undergo. It is incorrect to say that one's fate is entirely determined. Nothing can stand in the way of the grace of the Almighty.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man is burdened with the delusion that the temporary is eternal. Long identification has trained him so; so he has to be re-educated into the right vision. The absolute reality that persists unchanged is this ' I '. All else is unreal, appearing as real. The ' I ' in you is Paramatma (God) Himself. The waves play with the wind for a moment over the deep waters of the sea. It gives you the impression that it is separate from the ocean below, but it is just an appearance - a creation of the two ideas of Name and Form. Get rid of the two ideas and the wave disappears into the sea; its reality flashes upon you and you realise that God is present in man as Love.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Truth is one. It is beyond mind and speech. It transcends the limitations of time and space. Innumerable seekers have pursued different paths to recognise this Truth. There are notable differences among the seekers of Truth. These differences do not affect the nature of Reality. On the contrary, it is the existence of these differences that has spurred the continuous search for a unifying principle.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Once the organs of the body like eyes, ears, limbs became jealous of the tongue, saying that they make all efforts for securing food, but the tongue enjoys this. They stopped working and never sent any food. Tongue is the one that tastes the food and passes only palatable items of food inside, which is converted by the internal organs into energy giving blood. The tongue does not retain it. But for this vital part played by the tongue, the other organs would not be able to function at all. When the other organs became jealous of the tongue and stopped sending food with a view to harm it, they spelt their own ruin by such action, as they could not function when there was no food and consequently no supply of energy for these organs to function. Similarly, jealousy on the part of a person ultimately results in his own ruin.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Bhakti (Devotion to God) is like a king who has two attendants called wisdom and detachment. Bhakti must be built upon the foundation of wisdom; it must blossom in to detachment from the world. Prema (Love) gives rise to Daya (compassion), Vairagya (detachment) and induces Dama (self-control) and finally leads us along the path of Dharma (righteousness).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
When Bhaktas (devotees) pray to Bhagawan (God) sincerely making all their actions as offering to God, they will certainly receive appropriate grace from the Divine. There are nine types of devotion. Shravanam (listening to the glory of the Lord), Keerthanam (singing), Vishnusmaranam (remembering), Padasevanam (adoration), Vandanam (saluting), Archanam (worshipping), Dasyam (obedient service), Sneham (friendship) and Atmanivedanam (self-surrender). In whichever way you offer worship, God responds in the same way. When you surrender all your actions, you will surely receive His Grace.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
There is none to question Me if I do not act; there is nothing I would lose if I do not engage in activity. Nor have I any great urge to be active. Yet, you see Me very active. The reason is that I must be doing something all the time for your sake, as an example and inspiration. Those who lead must set an example for others to follow; and those who command must themselves carry out what they expect others to do. I am engaged in activity so that you learn to transmute every minute into a golden chance to enable you to move towards Godhead.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Grasp as the bow the great weapon furnished by the Upanishads, and fix in it an arrow sharpened by meditation. Draw it with the mind concentrated on Brahman (Godhead), and hit the target, the immortal Brahman without losing aim. Pranava (the sound of 'Om') is the bow, Atma (soul) is the arrow, Brahman is the target. So, the Sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) must, like the expert archer, be unaffected by things that agitate the mind. He should pay one-pointed attention to the target. Then, he becomes the thing meditated upon.

Date:Monday, December 10, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The person who is a slave to the mind will not find peace or happiness in life. The body is a mansion which has been projected by the mind for its own joy. Some waste their lives by expending their energy in looking after the body. Some others increase their attachment through thoughtless repetition of spiritual exercises, reducing them to mere ritual. The wise man is he who controls the mind and purifies the heart by filling it with good thoughts.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The importance of the mind in the process of transformation should be properly understood, because it is the mind that is the cause of both bondage and liberation. Your own actions are the cause of your happiness or sorrow. Do not blame others for your condition. Every thought, every word and every action has its reflection, resound and reaction. It is a sign of weakness to blame others for your troubles. You have to bear the consequences of your own actions. If they are unbearable, pray to God for relief. God alone can give relief in such cases.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Ahimsa (non-violence) means not causing harm to anyone, but it is not merely refraining from inflicting injuries on others with one’s limbs or weapons. Non-violence also has to be practiced with purity of mind, tongue and body. There should be no ill-feelings, for that too is a form of violence. To cause bodily harm to another is violence, but so is speaking harshly. Your speech should be sweet, pleasing and wholesome. All your actions should be helpful to others.

Truth is the way.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Meditate on the Truth and you will find that you are but a sparkling bubble upon the waters; born on water, living for a brief moment on water and merging back in to it. You owe your birth to God; you subsist on God and you merge in God. Every living thing, and for that matter, even non-living things have to reach that consummation. So do it now; take the first step. Purify your heart, sharpen your intellect or at least start chanting the name of God. The rest will follow in due course of time.

Worldly life is full of sorrow and suffering. Lord Krishna said in the Bhagavad Gita - "Anityam asukham loke imam prapya bhajasvamaam" meaning the world is ephemeral and full of misery; contemplate on Me constantly. Having taken human birth, you must find fulfilment in life. You must pursue a noble path. Do not get inflated by praise; be above praise and blame. Foster peace. Where is peace? It is not available in the market ready for sale! Peace is to be found within you. In the world outside, you find only 'pieces'.

Vegetarianism helps to rid the animal nature in man.
Date:Sunday, December 16, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
A bamboo is valued in terms of its thickness and height. The sugarcane gets its value from its juice. The worth of a human being is based on his Buddhi (intellect). The more the intellect develops, the better one becomes. As the intellect declines, the human descends to the level of animal. Man's worth has declined today because he does not recognise the importance of the intellect and of conduct based on proper discrimination. The form is human, but the thinking is at the animal level. Man has earned the appellation of "two-legged animal." Having acquired the human form, man should conduct himself with intelligence. This is achieved through Thyaga (renunciation) and Yoga (spiritual discipline).

Attachment to desires hinders spiritual growth.
Date:Monday, December 17, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
What is the meaning of ‘Ceiling on Desires’? People become deluded by unlimited desires, and live in a dream world. It is most important to keep desires under control, to put a ceiling on them. People are spending too much money. Instead of spending inordinately for their own pleasure, one should be spending for the relief of the poor and the needy. This is the meaning of the ‘Ceiling on Desires’ programme. Do not make the mistake of thinking that giving away money is all that is needed, giving away to others while allowing your own desires to continue to multiply. Curtail your desires, for materialistic desires lead to a restless and disastrous life. Desires are a prison. One can be freed only by limiting one’s wants.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Active participation in society, in a spirit of dedication and surrender, conceiving all acts as worship and all men as the embodiments of the Supreme, is one of the best forms of Sadhana (spiritual practises). For, there is no place where He is not; no object which is not Divine. The Vedas declare that that the Supreme willed and became all this. Worship, undertaking pilgrimages, etc. are only means to an end. The goal is the realisation of the ultimate truth that "God and I are One." That alone can fill the heart with permanent bliss.

Date:Wednesday, December 19, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The word 'Vairagya' literally means that which is opposed to Raga (attachment). Vairagya does not mean that you should give up everything and retire in to a forest. Vairagya really means you should stay where you are, in whatever station of life you are in, and understand the subtle nature of things, while giving up worldly desires. It means that by using discrimination you should know what to accept and what to reject. You should strive to recognise the divinity in every object you see and enjoy it. Vairagya is not merely giving up things. It consists in enjoying, without attachment, things which were previously enjoyed with attachment. That is real Vairagya. That is the mark of a true human being.

It is not possible to consider Creation and the Creator, Nature and God as different or separate from each other. Many people imagine that to divinise man and make him a godly being is a super-human exercise. This is not so. Divine Love is well within the reach of man. It is his natural state. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God is everything, so one cannot claim anything as one’s own. But people claim everything, saying, ‘it is mine’. Indeed, nothing belongs to anyone. The world is made up of objects. It is inert. In the waking sense, the senses cognise all these objects. But the senses are also inert. The eyes that see, the ears that hear, the tongue that speaks and the nose that smells - all of them are jada (inert). In fact, the entire body is inert. But all these inert objects are able to function because of the presence of Chaitanya (consciousness) in the mind. Thus we have to realise that the entire phenomenal universe is jada.

With faith in the oneness of humanity, he stood against his opponents and critics and withstood their onslaughts. Every saint and prophet who strove to uplift the downtrodden and open the eyes of those blind to the splendour of God, was ready and willing for the ultimate sacrifice. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
In rendering service, one should have no thought of one’s self. One should only consider how well one can render the service as an offering to the Divine. One should note the difference between Karma (action) and Karma Yoga (action as spiritual discipline). Ordinary activity is motivated by self interest or the desire to achieve some objective. In Karma Yoga, the action is desireless. Ordinary Karma is the cause of birth, death and rebirth, whereas Karma Yoga leads to freedom from birth. You should regard all service as a form of Karma Yoga – rendering service without any expectation of reward, and without even the feeling that one is ‘serving’ others. Any service done to anyone is actually service to the Divine.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Illness, both physical and mental, is a reaction on the body caused by poisons in the mind. An uncontaminated mind alone can ensure continuous good health. Vices breed disease. Bad thought, bad habits and bad company are fertile grounds in which disease thrives. A sense of elation and exultation keeps the body free from ill-health. The evil habits in which people indulge, are the chief causes of disease, physical as well as mental. Greed affects the mind; disappointments make people depressed. You can justify your existence as a human being only by the cultivation of virtues. Then you can become a worthy candidate for Godliness. It is progress in virtue that announces the progress of man towards divinity. Virtues also confer freshness, skill and long years of youthfulness.

Detachment from ownership, but stewardship of all possessions may be the best form of control of the mind.
Date:Monday, December 31, 2007
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
What is Mano-Nigraham (control of the mind)? Nigraham (control) really means being indifferent to the vagaries of the mind. It is difficult to control the mind, just as it is difficult to confine air in one's grasp. How can anyone control the mind which is all-pervading in the vastness of its range and comprehension? When it is realised that the mind is made up of thoughts and doubts, the elimination of the thoughts is the means of restraining the mind. Thoughts are associated with desires. As long as desires remain, one cannot have Vairagya (detachment). It is necessary to limit desires. When there is no restraint, excessive desire becomes an evil. It leads to misery. When we strive to control desire, in due course, it develops into Vairagya (non-attachment or renunciation).

Man expects the New Year to confer on him and the world at large peace, happiness and prosperity. But the welfare of the world depends on man's conduct and behaviour. Man's conduct depends on his mind. The nature of the mind depends on thoughts. Only when man's thoughts are based on truth will the world flourish. One who aspires for the welfare of the world should see to it that his thoughts and actions are in accordance with his aspirations. The New Year brings with it neither happiness nor misery. The four subtle elements of consciousness - Manas (the mind), Buddhi (the intellect), Chittha (will) and Ahamkara (the ego) - are all Maya (delusion). What is Maya? Maa (not) ya (exist). That which does not exist but appears to exist is Maya. Maya makes the unreal appear as real and the real as unreal. The other name for Maya is Ajnana (ignorance). Ajnana is that which hides the reality from you and makes you regard the non-existing as existing. It makes the false appear as true. As you move towards the light, your shadow falls behind you; when you move away from the light, you have to follow your own shadow. Samskriti, the Sanskrit word for culture and civilization is derived from the word 'Samskara', which means the dual process of removing the dust and dirt of vice and planting the virtues of Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love) in the heart. The foundation of Dharma laid down by sages teach people that one should not enthuse over victory or despair over defeat; both are to be welcomed as tests of one's faith.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
All religions teach one basic discipline, the removal of egoism and giving up of petty desires. Every religion teaches man to fill his being with the glory of God and evict the pettiness of conceit. It trains him in methods of detachment and discrimination, so that he may aim high and attain liberation. Believe that all hearts are motivated by the One and only God; all Faiths glorify the One and only God; all names in all languages and all Forms that man can conceive of, denote the One and the only God who is best worshipped through pure Love. Cultivate that Ekabhava (the attitude of oneness) towards men of all creeds in all lands.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
In this infinite world there are manifold beings. It is only Dharma (right-conduct) and Jnana (wisdom) that distinguish man from other beings. You can win the Grace of the Lord only by Dharma. Dharma induces the spirit of self-surrender. Without the mastery over the senses, feelings and emotions that is a result of the practice of Dharma, you cannot have steady faith and detachment.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
When you wake up, feel that you are entering the stage to play the role assigned to you by the Lord; pray that you may act it well and earn His approbation. At night, when you retire to sleep, feel that you are entering the greenroom after the scene, but with the costume of your role on; for perhaps the role is not yet over and you have not yet been permitted to take the costume off. Perhaps, you have to make another entrance the next morning. Do not worry about that. Place yourself fully at His disposal; He knows; He has written the play and He knows how it will go on and how it will end; yours is but to act and retire.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The wicked tendencies in man, such as arrogance, envy, bad thoughts and misdeeds, go on shearing the life of man into pieces. His bad qualities shorten his life span. When man's life is filled with good thoughts and good actions, he can live for a hundred years. The secret of the longevity enjoyed by the ancients is precisely this. Man today wastes his life immersed in bad thoughts and actions and ultimately meets a sad end.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man is basically and essentially immortal. But yet he is afraid that he will die. He is Ananda Swaroopa (Embodiment of Bliss), but he weeps and is miserable. He is Shanti Swaroopa (Embodiment of Peace), yet he is burdened with anxiety. This absurd self-deception is the root of the tragedy from which the world is suffering today. The truth has to be driven in to the consciousness of man. The human being is a composite of man, beast and God, and in the inevitable struggle between the three for supremacy, you must ensure that God wins.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
In this Kali Age, people have forgotten human values and exhibit animal qualities such as lust, anger, greed and hatred. One may study all the scriptures, perform all types of sacrifices, go on extensive pilgrimages, but it is not easy to control the senses and the mind, direct one's vision inward and maintain equanimity. In ancient times, the sages and seers maintained purity in thought, truth in words and righteousness in deeds. Purity of heart and selflessness are the hallmarks of human life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The human body is the most wondrous machine in the world. It has a bewildering multiplicity of organs, nerves and cells which cooperate to maintain it under varied conditions. If any one of these rebel or refuse to cooperate with another, the body is bound to suffer. So too, a society, community or nation can be safe, secure and happy only when the individuals comprising it are mutually helpful and bound together in skilful and sincere service. Or else, the world has to face confusion and chaos.

The world is a great teacher, a constant guide and source of inspiration. That is the reason why man is placed in the world. Every bird, every animal, every tree, mountain and star and each tiny worm has a lesson for man, if he has but the thirst to learn. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Sankranti is an auspicious festival of the Bharatiyas. From this day commences the Uttarayana Punyakala (northward journey of the sun) which is considered auspicious for man to embark on his journey towards the goal of a purposeful, sacred and blissful life. In the north, we have Himachala (Himalayan mountains). Himachala symbolises a heart that is pure and cool as Hima (ice) and steady as Achala (mountain). The message of Sankranti is that people should direct their vision towards Himachala in this symbolic sense. It does not mean looking at the north with the physical eyes. It calls for enquiring into the truth of the spirit with Jnana Drishti (inward eye of wisdom).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man's conduct is based on his thoughts. Thoughts are based on desires. Desires depend on the company that one keeps. The company of noble people gives rise to noble thoughts. The mind by nature is pure, but it gets polluted by association with evil qualities. Purification of the mind is therefore the main spiritual practice that one has to undertake. Repent wholeheartedly for the mistakes that have been committed. This penance will purify your mind and make it sacred.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
What is spirituality? It is the resolute pursuit of cosmic consciousness. Spirituality aims at enabling a person to manifest in all its fullness the divine cosmic consciousness (Chaitanya) that is present both within and outside oneself. It means getting rid of one’s animal nature and developing the divine tendencies within one. It means breaking down the barriers between God and Nature and establishing their essential oneness. Today, people think that spirituality has no relation to mundane life, and vice versa. This is a big mistake. True divinity is a combination of spirituality and social obligations. National unity and social harmony are founded upon spirituality. It is the Divine that links spirituality and social existence.

Date:Friday, January 18, 2008
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man is deriving innumerable benefits from Nature and enjoying the amenities provided by it in various ways. But what is the gratitude he is offering to Nature and God? Man is forgetting the Divine who is the Sole Provider of everything. This is the reason for his falling prey to various difficulties and calamities. While he is receiving countless benefits from Providence, he is offering nothing in return to Nature or God. This shows how unnatural and heartless man's behaviour is. When we are enjoined to return good for evil, how unbecoming is it to fail even to return good for good? Man should learn the great lesson Nature is trying to teach him - the lesson of doing service with no expectation of return.

Date:Monday, January 21, 2008
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
To achieve anything in this world, discipline is indispensable; we must also have self-confidence, and then self-sacrifice. If you do not possess these three, your life will be meaningless. When a river is flowing erratically, we construct a dam, change its course and divert is usefully on its way to the ocean. So also, when our ideas are recklessly and aimlessly going their own way, they should be channelled by the construction of the dam of discipline. They should be made to take the form of sacrifice and go towards the ocean of faith in one’s Self. We should regard it as absolutely essential to attain these three qualities – sacrifice, self-confidence and discipline.

Only when there is no ego, or at least, less ego, can peace, happiness, co-operation and love flourish. Man cannot claim to be a man until this ego which urges him to destroy others is overcome by the Sadhana (spiritual discipline) of Seva (selfless service). By saturating the Seva with love, work is offered to God; it then gets sanctified into Pooja (worship). This makes it free from ego. But, if each has caught a glimpse of the Atmic Reality, of the source from which he has emerged and the goal into which he is to merge, then all will reach the goal of the journey, sooner or later. Once that glimpse is received through Divine grace, the fascination for the body and the senses which dominate it, and the world which feeds the senses will all become meaningless and fade away; man will then have instead of the Deha-bhranti (attachment for body) which now torments him, the yearning to know and be established in the Dehi, the Divine Indweller.

Birds that fly far from the mast of a ship on high seas have to return to that very mast, for they have no other place to fold their tired wings and rest. Devoid of this Jnana (spiritual wisdom), all efforts to seek spiritual bliss and peace will be futile.

This quote is so profound about God's presence in man. But what is atma? Baba says it is consciousness, the same as Paramatma, God. When consciousness is embodied, it is called atma, when it is not it is called Paramatma.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Life is a campaign against one's inner foes; it is a battle with obstacles, temptations, hardships and hesitations. These foes are within man and so, the battle has to be incessant and perpetual. Like the virus that thrives in the bloodstream, the vices of lust, greed, hate, malice, pride and envy sap the energy and faith of man and ruin him.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The Vedas and Shastras, since they were won by penance and travail by sages and seers, who were interested in the welfare of humanity and the liberation of man, are the greatest repositories of Hitha (beneficence). They advise that man must regulate his 'outer-look' and develop the 'inner-look'; the inner reality is the foundation on which the outer reality is built. It is like the steering wheel inside the car which directs the outer wheels. Know that the basic reality is God. Become aware of it and stay in that awareness always. Whatever be the stress and the storm, do not waver from that faith.

Today people study the Vedas and other scriptures as a ritual; they do not put into practice any of their injunctions. Of what avail is it to merely know how the Vedas and Upanishads have described the Divine, when this knowledge is not reflected in one's life? Such a person is like a blind man who hears about the existence of the world but cannot see it. The scriptures are meant to provide guidance for practical living and not merely to be learnt by rote.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Today, man aspires to attain Mukthi (liberation). What is Mukthi? It is not the attainment of a heavenly abode. Mukthi means freedom from suffering. One needs to have Mukthi at three levels - body, mind and soul. For example, when one is hungry, one eats food and the hunger is satiated. This is a kind of Mukthi. Suppose, one is suffering from a disease, one gets cured by taking medicine. This is also a kind of Mukthi. All this is related to the body. At the mental level, Mukthi means controlling the vagaries of the mind. But, true liberation lies in understanding the principle of the Atma which neither comes nor goes. This is termed as 'Nirvana'.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Love alone can reveal the Divinity latent in all. Love is God. Live in Love. Love lives by giving and forgiving; self lives by getting and forgetting. Love is selflessness. Do not waste your life pursuing the narrow interests of the self. Love! Love! Become what you truly are - the embodiments of Love. No matter how others treat you or what they think of you, do not worry. Your own heart shining with Love is God's Love. You should constantly remind yourself, "I am God." The day you see yourself as God, you become God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
There is no living being without the spark of love; even a mad man loves something or somebody intensely. But, you must recognise this love as but a reflection of the Premaswarupa (embodiment of Love) that is your reality, of the God who is residing in your heart. Without that spring of Love that gushes forth from your heart, you will not be prompted to love at all. Recognise that spring, rely on it more and more, envelop the whole world with it, discarding all traces of selfishness. Do not seek anything in return for it from those to whom you extend it.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God is not involved in either reward or punishment. He only reflects, resounds and reacts. He is the eternal unaffected Witness. You decide your own fate. Do good, be good, you get good in return; be bad, do bad deeds, you receive bad results. Do not thank or blame God. He does not even will that creation, protection and destruction shall take place. They follow the same law, it is the innate law of the Maya-ridden (illusory) universe. Electric current, for example, can be used by us to power fans to get cool breeze, light bulbs for light, to magnify human speech, to make many copies of a printed sheet, etc. In all these cases, it creates, but if you grasp the bare wire which carries the current, you are killed. The current creates, it protects, it destroys; it all depends on how we utilize it.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The sacred scriptures of Bharat loudly proclaim that the individual is the architect of his own fate. Whatever form the person craves for now while alive in this birth, that form he attains after death. Therefore, it is clear that Karma (consequences of one's actions) decides birth and wealth, the character and attitude, the level of intelligence. The joys and sorrows of this life are the earnings gathered during the previous life. The inference, therefore, is inevitable that the next life of the individual will be in consonance with the activities prompted by the level of Karma in this life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Be always in the company of devotees of God. Through this Sathsang (good company), Viveka (discrimination) and Vairagya (detachment) will be inculcated in you. These qualities will strengthen the spirit and endow you with inner peace. If the mind is subdued, that alone is enough; it is not then necessary to conquer the external senses. If the mind has no attachment to the sense objects, the senses have nothing to cling on to and they become powerless; likes and dislikes are both starved out of existence. The bonds with the objective world are cut, though the senses may still be affected by it. For him who has been blessed by the awareness of the Atma, how can anything worldly bring grief or joy?

The first step to direct knowledge of God is spiritual practice; the first step in spiritual practice is service to the Guru performed in total faith and surrender. At the same time, the responsibility of the Guru is to instruct the disciple on the nature of God, to instruct continuously and in simple ways. When the disciple grasps this instruction, it becomes indirect knowledge. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Through activity, man attains purity of consciousness. In fact, man has to welcome activity with this end in view. And why strive for a pure consciousness? If a bucket is filled with polluted and muddy water, can you see its bottom? Similarly, within man's heart, deep down in his consciousness, we have the Atma. But it can be cognized only when the consciousness is clarified. Your imaginations, your inferences, your judgements and prejudices, your passions, emotions and egoistic desires, muddy the consciousness and make it opaque. How, then, can you become aware of the Atman, that is at the very base? Through Seva (selfless service) rendered without any desire to placate one's ego and with only the well-being of others in view, it is possible to cleanse the consciousness and have the Atman revealed.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The five elements each have a characteristic that affects and attracts one of the five senses. The ether as sound fascinates the mind through the ear; air as touch draws the mind to itself through the skin; fire as form manipulates the mind in its favour through the eye; water as taste enslaves the mind through the tongue; and earth as smell intoxicates the mind through the nose. The senses interact with the external world and produce experiences which yield joy or grief. Falsely identifying himself with the senses, man suffers in the coils of attachment. The ear must exult when it gets a chance to hear the wonderful glories of God. The tongue must exult when it can praise Him. The human body has been given to you for the grand purpose of realising the Lord within. If you have a fully equipped car in good running condition, would you keep it unused in the garage? The car is primarily for going on a journey; get into it and go! Only then is it worthwhile to own it. So too, with the body. Proceed towards the goal. As stone, it is of little value. But, when feeling permeates it, when devotion transmutes it, the stone becomes the supreme-most treasure to the human mind. The holy festival of Maha Shivaratri was celebrated on 6th and 7th March in the Divine Presence of Lord Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the embodiment of Shiva-Shakti Principle. Over the years, Maha Shivaratri has attracted large crowds to Prasanthi Nilayam in anticipation of Lingodbhavam, where Bhagawan Baba manifests Lingams (Elliptical symbols used in worship of Lord Shiva) from within His body that emerge from His mouth. And this year too, crowds started thronging Prasanthi Nilayam days ahead of the Holy Occassion.
On 6th evening, at 5.20 pm, Bhagawan arrived in Sai Kulwant Hall to the accompaniment of Vedic chants and Panchavadyam. Bhagawan blessed Sri V.Srinivasan, the All India President of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations to address the gathering. The learned speaker pointed out that though ‘Ratri’ or night is usually associated with ignorance, Maha Shivaratri is unique as it is the night of ‘Shiva’ or auspiciousness, where the finite individual merges in the infinite Godhead. And the process of achieving this merger is through singing His glorious names – Bhajans. During Bhajans one gives up one’s individual differences and sings in unison with others. Therefore, singing Bhajans is a very powerful means of uniting all mankind. Sri Srinivasan concluded his speech with a very pertinent quote – “Where there is great love, there are great miracles.” Indeed, if one witnesses wonderful miracles in Bhagawan’s presence, it is due to the fact that Bhagawan Baba is the embodiment of Supreme Love.
Following Sri Srinivasan’s speech, Bhagawan delivered His Divine Discourse. He decried the pitiable scenario in the world today where man takes great efforts to accumulate wealth but does not take even half as much for realizing God. Bhagawan reminded everyone that “Brahma Satyam, Jagath Mithya”, which means that God alone is true and everlasting whereas the world is but a delusion. Therefore, one must remember God, love Him and chant His name. God resides in everyone in the form of Love; life lived without Love is no life at all, Bhagawan said. During His discourse, Bhagawan also revealed that though He wanted to manifest the Lingam, He decided against it due to the prayers of so many students and devotees who submitted to Him that they did not want to watch Bhagawan’s physical body undergo pain. Bhagawan exhorted everyone to revere one’s parents and always be grateful to them for all that they have received from them. He further said that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi are the father and mother of the entire universe. Then Bhagawan, to the joy of the multitudes present there, proclaimed the phenomenon of the three Sais: Shirdi Sai, Parthi Sai and Prema Sai Avatars. He added that presently during the life of Sathya Sai, lot of conflicts and troubles are being witnessed, but during the era of Prema Sai there will be no more conflicts. The whole country and the world will be free of divisions based on caste, culture and country, and everyone would be united in Prema (Love). The devotees were overjoyed at this stupendous declaration and responded with a thunderous applause. Bhagawan concluded His Discourse with the song: “Hari Bhajana Bina Sukh Shanti Nahi…” and reiterated that the only way of attaining peace is through singing Bhajans. Bhagawan retired to His residence around 7.15 pm. Bhajans continued with unabated devotional fervour through the night. Many groups took turns in leading the Bhajans. At around midnight, there was also the Ekadasha Rudra Parayana where the students chanted the sacred hymns - Namakam and Chamakam eleven times in worship of Lord Shiva.
At 7.10 am the next morning, Bhagawan granted Darshan and at 7.45 am, the Bhajans that had been going on non-stop, concluded with Arati being offered to Bhagawan. After this, Prasadam was distributed to one and all. In the evening, Bhagawan blessed Sri Ajit Popat, a devotee from United Kingdom to share his thoughts with the august gathering. Sri Popat said that there are three Hs that one should always follow: be Healthy, be Holy and be Happy. Without having a healthy mind in a healthy body, one cannot progress on the spiritual path. However, being healthy is not an end in itself; we should utilize the body in the service of society. Deliberating on how to be holy, Sri Popat remarked that one’s attire or display of religious symbols on oneself do not make one holy. The secret of holiness lies in maintaining unity of thought, word and deed. Finally, quoting from Bhagawan’s discourses, Sri Popat said “Happiness is union with God”. He concluded his speech with a verse from Koran where he prayed to Bhagawan Baba to lead everyone on the right path unto Himself.
Then to the absolute delight of everyone, Bhagawan granted His Divine Discourse. Bhagawan dwelt on the importance of Karma (action) in the life of man. He said that before one undertakes any task, one should discriminate as to whether it is good or evil. Having been bestowed with the human body, one must always undertake only good actions and lead a ‘human’ life as against resorting to evil deeds and stooping down to bestiality. One must always remember the inexorable rule that good acts lead to good consequences and vice versa. It would be foolish to expect beneficial results after having committed evil actions. Bhagawan then said both bondage and liberation of man depend on his mind: “Mana Eva Manushyaanaam Kaaranam Bandha Mokshayoho”. Man can attain divinity only by cultivating unity and purity; unity implying harmony of one’s thoughts, words and deeds. Bhagawan also exhorted everyone to consume only pure food that is offered to God, which will lead to good thoughts and healthy life. He also stressed the importance of maintaining good company and staying away from bad company. Dilating on the significance and merit of doing community Bhajans as advocated by Guru Nanak, He said that at least a few people out of the entire group will focus their minds on God, and that will benefit one and all. Bhagawan then sang “Hari Bhajan Bina Sukh Shanti Nahi…” thus bringing the Shivaratri celebrations to a grand conclusion. Bhagawan accepted Arati and retired to His residence at 7.30 pm.
Jai Sai Ram!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Devotion is the most precious treasure, it is the truest path, the only way to God. Man must live immersed in Bhakti (devotion) for the sake of Bhakti alone. Bhakti is love of the purest and the noblest variety. Such love is the breath that sustains life, that supports the soul in its effort to merge in the Super-soul. The years of life spent without light of love are years wasted.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
When you see a plane flying in the sky, would you refuse to believe that it is flown by a pilot, just because you do not see him from where you are? You must go into the plane to see the pilot; you cannot deny his existence, standing on the ground below. You have to guess that the plane must have a pilot. So too seeing the Universe, you have to guess the existence of God, not deny Him because you are not able to see him. To see your own eyes, you need a mirror; to see yourself in your native spiritual grandeur, you need a Guru (preceptor).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
One can claim to be a devotee of the Lord only if the passions and emotions are pure and the character virtuous. The tongue may utter the Name of the Lord, the ear may hear the glory of the Lord, the hand may scatter flowers on the image of God; but the tongue may not know or relish the taste, the ear may not yearn, the hand may not hanker for God. These can happen only when the heart is aware of the Supreme, when the mind is thrilled recollecting the glory of God. Otherwise one is like the spoon which dips into sour and sweet with equal alacrity and insensitivity. It does not refuse or relish any of the tastes.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
True sacrifice consists in sharing with others, one's wealth, strength, etc. that have been derived from society. Man becomes immortal by the spirit of sacrifice and not by deeds, progeny or wealth. Man should therefore make an effort to make his life meaningful by sacrificing personal comforts for the sake of society and his fellow beings.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
You are all the limbs of that One Cosmic Body, the Purusha, who is far more expansive than the Universe, this Universe being but a small fraction of His Splendour. Individuals may be deluded into the belief that they are different from the rest. But the Atma in each is the same. In a garland, the first to strike your eyes are the flowers, while the thread with which they are strung has to be inferred; it is not so patent. But, without it, they will all fall off. So too, without that bond in Brahman (Divinity), you will fall off as unrelated entities; in fact, you are entities only due to the Divine spark within!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God will not ask you, when and where you rendered service? He will ask with what motive you did it. You may boast about the quantity, but God seeks quality, the quality of the heart, the purity of the mind, the nobility of the motive. The Lord is pleased only when you do the things He desires. How else can you win His grace, but by nursing and nourishing His children. You must not merely have the enthusiasm to serve, but also the intelligence and the skill; only then can you be efficient and useful. Enthusiasm without efficiency is often a source of loss and grief.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The sages of yore knew that the mind is an instrument which can bind man or release him from bondage. One has to understand its ways, as well as its potentialities. You must learn how to wield it, rather than yield to it. It is the mind that weaves the pattern called the 'I'. It constructs notions of pleasure and pain, of joy and grief, and a whole array of urges and impulses. It resists all attempts to escape into the Eternal, the Universal, the Absolute. It protests when the individual is eager to become conscious of his true identity; but when it finds determined opposition to its tactics, it surrenders and disappears.

The heart of Jesus was pure and calm. Hence, it is honoured as sacred. We must also make our hearts sacred so that either we merge in Jesus or Jesus merges in us. When we merge, it is called Bhakti (devotion); to have Jesus awakened in us is the path of Jnana (wisdom). Jesus was a messenger of God; but note this: all of you are also messengers of God. Jesus was not the only Son of God; you all are His children. Jesus and His Father are one. You and God are also one, become aware of it.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Spiritual health is preserved and promoted by attention to three Gunas (inherent tendencies): Satwa, Rajas and Tamas. Physical health is preserved and promoted by attention to three humours of the body; Vaata (wind), Pitta (bile) and Kapha (phlegm). The three humours must not get vitiated or unbalanced. A healthy body is the best container for a healthy mind. Illness makes the mind agitated and anxious. The material and the spiritual are the two pans of the balance. They have to be attended to, in equal measure, at least until a certain stage of progress is attained in spiritual development.

Aaron reports by email his early experience at Puttaparthi.
Perhaps some do not realize that in the early years Sai Baba would serve all guests during a poor feeding. The women would cook the food. When it was ready they would alert Sai Baba and he would break two coconuts and dribble the juice over the pots and tell them to begin serving the food. I should add that the food would never stop until all had been served. I used to watch to see it be replinished but it was impossible to do. It was as if you were distracted and then look to see the pots were full again. He later told me that the energy field around the pots was so high that people could not observe it. Someone would carry out the food and Sai Baba would begin serving everyone who were already sitting on the ground in rows with a woven leaf plate before them. He would ladle out food as he proceeded down the rows. He loves to play the good host. I have had meals in the cafeteria in Whitefield that he would serve to us. He was always encouraging us to take more food. When he was sure all had been served he would sit at a small table in the midst of us and have his lunch which generally was only a few small bites of a rice dish. Then he would take some pan from the covered metal box and chew it. He stopped using pan years ago. He was always the most gracious host. Aaron

Thought for the day as written at Prasanthi Nilayam - 23rd March 2008
When a cloth is recognised as a mere arrangement of yarn or basically as cotton, the warp and the woof disappear from the consciousness. The mind is composed of the warp and woof of desire; when man is established in the experience of the One, there is no desire, for who is to desire for whom or what? Thus, Mano Layam or Mano Naashanam (dissolution or destruction of the mind) is accomplished. So, man has to reduce his desires to become free from delusion; desire comes of attachment; deliverance comes from detachment.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
If you cannot pray for the welfare of the community around you in whom God lives, how will it be possible for you to worship an invisible God? The first thing you have to do is strive for the welfare of the community around you. If the individual is deluded into believing that he is serving others, then woe be unto him, for there is no 'other' at all. All are One; one man's sorrow is everyone's sorrow. The fundamental flaw is the ignorance of man. If only he were wise, he would have known that all individuals are waves on the Ocean of the Self.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Each of you must take up some spiritual effort in order to cleanse the mind of evil qualities. Come out of the well of ego into the sea of the Universal Spirit, of which you are a part. Contemplate on God and His Glory when you repeat any one of His Names with every breath. Or, engage in some task where you dedicate the fruit of Karma (action) to God, where you devote your time and energy to share your joy or skill or knowledge with your fellowmen. Or, keep yourself surrounded always by persons devoted to the higher life. By these means, you can achieve Chitta Shuddhi (cleansing of the mind), so that the Truth can be clearly reflected therein.

Worry or grief there will always be, of one type or the other, in the past, present or the future; while waking, dreaming, or sleeping. But place faith in the Lord and do your tasks in dedication to Him and the dualities of joy and sorrow will vanish. Grief is caused, as is joy, by the attachment of the senses to the objects. Once you know that you are not the senses or the mind, but He who operates the senses and wields the mind, you cross the bounds of pleasure and pain.

Aspire to become good, not great....Greatness is like a passing cloud. You occupy an exalted position, earn a lot of money, but nothing remains with you. Earn a good name for yourself. People should respect you because of your goodness. Only goodness gives true happiness. Do always good. Never indulge in evil. If you want to be happy in life, you should try to become a good person.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Spirit can only be awakened, realized through individual discipline and the grace of God. These two can be won through love, purity and service to others. Individual effort and divine grace are interdependent; without effort, there will be no conferment of grace; without grace, there can be no taste in the effort. To win that grace, you need only have faith and virtue. You need not praise Him in order to win His favour. Faith in God is the best reinforcement for spiritual victory. When you revel in the contemplation of the splendour of the Lord, nothing material can attract you; all else will seem inferior; the company of the godly alone will be relished.

Seva (service) opens the eyes of man to the comprehensive unity of creation. The easiest and most fruitful expression of Dharma (righteousness) today consists in doing service as worship of the Divine around you. Dedicate all your skills, talents, wealth and scholarship to the living embodiments of Divinity around you. That is the Dharmashakthi (power of right activity) which can draw grace upon you.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
One’s body is derived from the flesh and blood of the mother. The amount of sacrifice involved in giving birth to a child and rearing that child with continuous care and love is beyond description. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, the life you lead are all the gifts of your parents. If you do not honour your parents who are verily the 'creators' in human form, how can you learn to honour the Creator in Divine Form? One’s primary duty, therefore, is to please one’s parents – only thus can one’s debt to them be discharged. Nor is that all, the debt to one’s parents can also be fully discharged by rendering service to society.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
To be born as a human being is a great fortune. For, man alone can attain the status of the Divine by recognising the reality of his being. No beast or bird can reach that height of realisation. But, it is tragic that instead of valuing the chance and utilising it, man fritters his years away and dies without attaining the goal. He is disgracing himself and denying his high destiny. A minute's reflection will reveal to him how far he is from attaining the stage of self-realisation. But, what a pity, he does not dedicate his life to the Divine, instead he is caught up in the vain pursuit of comforts and cosy living.

Seva (selfless service) brings out all that is great in man. It broadens the heart and widens one's vision. It fills one with joy. It promotes unity. It proclaims the truth of the spirit. It drives out all the evil qualities in man. It must be regarded as a great spiritual discipline. All relationships of husband and wife, mother and child, employer and the employee are based on mutual service. The world is progressing because of such mutual service. If the principle of service did not operate, the world would come to a halt. It is only when man is filled with the spirit of service that his divine nature is recalled. He then experiences the peace the passeth all understanding.

If you allow the wind of doubt or the sun of despair to affect the pot of Ananda (bliss) that you have filled in your heart, it will evaporate quickly. But if you keep the pot in the cool waters of good company and good deeds, it can be preserved undiminished for ever. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
If only the agony and toil now being experienced by man to accumulate the symbols of wealth and power are directed towards God, man can be infinitely more happy. The veil of Maya (illusion), however, hides from him the face of God which is shining from every being and thing around him. Maya is of the nature of Tamas (darkness and ignorance). In deep, dreamless sleep, the Self alone exists, but it is supervened by Maya or Ajnana (ignorance). You are not aware then that you are Brahman (God); that is the difference between the state of Jnana (spiritual realization) and the Sushupti (deep sleep) stage. The Jnani knows that he is One with Brahman, but the person in deep, dreamless sleep is not aware of it.

This is an email I received from regular mailings I receive from India. The is no link to it, and I am only sharing what has been sent to me.
The Rebirth of Swami Vivekananda!!!
Swami Vivekananda (1863 - 1902)
From Mrs. Edith Allan's reminiscences:
SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: I have to come back once more. The Master said I am to come back once more with him.
MRS. ALLAN: You have to come back because Shri Ramakrishna says so?
SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: Souls like that have great power, Madam!!!
The story about the rebirth of Swami Vivekananda and his future involvement in the Sai Mission is well documented in the book "Sai Inner Views and Insight" by Howard Murphet, the well known and renowned worldwide author and devotee of Bhagavan Baba.
Here are some brief notes.
"In the late 1960's Howard Murphet was in India with his wife Iris. Baba told Murphet and his wife: "Vivekananda has been reborn in Sri Lanka. When his education and training are complete, he will help me with my mission." The same announcement has been made by Swami to Andrew Schartz and to a few of his friends.
In March of 1987 a young man from Sri Lanka, whose name is Nalin Sedera, visited Prashanti Nilayam along with a group of people from his own country. An Australian devotee, Elvin Gates, was in the interview room with this group of Lankan people. Elvin Gates told that Sathya Sai Baba made the revelation to the young man the he was Vivekananda reborn. This took place on two successive days during two interviews in the private interview room. After the interview the news quickly spread throughout the ashram and crowds began to follow the young man!!!
Two years later, in 1989, Howard Murphet had the opportunity to talk to Nalin himself.
Nalin said that before meeting Sathya Sai Baba he had a dream in which Swami, wearing a white dress, showed him an old couple, saying that they were his parents in a previous incarnation. When Nalin asked Swami to speak about his parents, Swami replied: "Forget about that. I am your father and your mother."
In the interview room Swami asked him: "What is your name?" Nalin replied: "Nalin." Swami said: "You're not Nalin, you are Naren." Narendra was the name of Swami Vivekananda and Naren was the name that Ramakrishna always used for his beloved disciple, Narendra!!!
Then Swami said: "In your previous birth you were a great saint. Do you know who Narendra was?" Nalin replied: "No, Swami, I don't." Sai Baba went on: "Narendra was the name of Vivekananda."
"I have been waiting for you for eighty-five years." Swami said. Vivekananda left his body in 1902 and the interview was in 1987, exactly eighty-five years later.
Swami said to Nalin that he will come to live in the Prashanti Nilayam ashram in the year 2021. That is the year in which Sathya Sai Baba has announced he will leave His body.
Howard Murphet also says that Nalin has been back later to the ashram secretly and in incognito more than once. It is said that he will follow the footsteps of Bhagavan to fulfill the mission of Baba."

You must strive to diagnose your own character and discover the faults that are infesting it; do not try to analyse the character of others and seek to spot their defects. This self-examination is very necessary to bring to light the defects that might undermine one's spiritual career. Man differs from man in this struggle against the inner foes. Each gets the result that his Sadhana (spiritual exercise) deserves, that his acts in this and previous births deserve. In the spiritual path, each one has to move forward from where he already is, in his own pace, in the light of the lamp which each one holds in his own hand.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Manava (man) is the very embodiment of divinity. ‘Ma’—not, ‘Nava’—new, i.e., man is not new. He is Purathana (ancient) and Sanathana (eternal). Man has been in existence for countless number of years. Every second of life is new. Thus, there is no particular sanctity about the beginning or ending of a year. The time or date is not the cause of your happiness or misery. Your own Karma (actions) in the past is the cause of both your happiness and misery. As is the seed, so are the plant and fruit; they cannot be different. Do not waste your mental energy in speculations of this or that happening.

Namasmarana (chanting God's Name) is the process by which an attitude of dedication can be cultivated and confirmed. When confronted by calamity, you must attach yourself to this Sadhana (spiritual practice) even more firmly, instead of losing faith in it and getting slack. Have faith in yourself, your own capacity to adhere to a strict time-table of Sadhana (spiritual exercises) and your ability to reach the goal of realisation. Obstacles that come in the way are often treated with a certain amount of resentment by the pilgrims on the spiritual path; but these tests are to be treated as ensuring safety. You drive a nail into the wall to hang a picture thereon; but before hanging the picture, you try to see whether the nail has been well driven by shaking it; when you are certain it does not shake even when all your strength is used, you become bold enough to hang the picture on it. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Bliss has to be sought not through accumulation of material wealth, but through sacrifice and promotion of the welfare of one's fellow beings. Thyaga (sacrifice) is recommended by the Vedas as the only path to immortality. Give in plenty, give gladly, and with gratitude to God. Selfishness is the canker that destroys charity. Though one is aware that a certain act is wrong, selfishness does not allow him to desist. But, this weakness can be overcome by steady determination. Share with others the knowledge and skills you have earned, the ideas and ideals you have benefited from and the joy you have won by discipline and dedication. Sharing will not diminish them or devalue them. On the other hand, they will shine with added splendour.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The main thing is the control and the sublimation of the senses. The conquest of the senses and of the passions and emotions is a slow and difficult process, which will be crowned by success only by systematic endeavour. How can man serve others or the Lord who is resident in all when the senses drag him away from that service or when passions peep in to tarnish the love that inspires the service? The Lokesha (Lord of the world) is engaged in spreading Ananda (bliss) in the Loka (world); man should be engaged in spreading Ananda around him. Today is a sacred day which has to be spent in sacred thoughts and deeds and not in cheap debilitating sensual pleasures and pastimes. Of course, people in their ignorance resort to these hollow hilarities, urged by their innate and inescapable urge for Ananda (supreme bliss). The Ananda within seeks Ananda pure and undefiled. It can be secured only through the satisfaction of higher and more sublime desires like realizing the Ultimate. Each festival has been designed by the sages as a step in the progress of man towards this goal. Nevertheless, we are casting many a New Year Day behind us, unmindful of its significance. Year after year is wasted in misdirected effort at attaining Ananda, and in the consequent misery and despair.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Love is the only path that can take you to God. When you develop love, God will give Himself up to you and will protect you always. There is an intimate and inseparable relationship between the love of a devotee and the grace of God. Only love can win divine grace. You have to practise righteousness and tread the path of sacrifice to experience everlasting happiness. The name and principle of Rama will give you tremendous strength and power. The divine principle underlying the Avatars of Rama and Krishna can neither be explained in words nor understood with the help of worldly education. Only through love can one understand them. Fill your heart with love and chant the name of Rama.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The shadow that you cast is reduced bit by bit with every step that you take towards the Sun until the Sun shines right on the top of your head and the shadow crawls under your feet and disappears. So too, Maya (illusion) becomes lesser and lesser effective as you march towards Jnana (wisdom). When you are well established in your understanding, Maya falls at your feet and is powerless to deceive you any further; it disappears, as far as you are concerned. Though you cannot know while in this dual world, how Maya originated, you can know how it can be terminated and can succeed in exterminating its effects. Maya has no beginning but it has an end, for him who wins the light by which the darkness can be negated.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
True devotion consists in offering all your thoughts and actions to God and yearning for His grace. Devotion confined to a brief spell in the Pooja room (shrine room) or temple is not true devotion. During that time, devotion seems to swell within you and you feel at peace but, once outside, the peace is lost and anger takes its place. This cannot be called devotion. Bhakti (Devotion) has been described as a state of non-separation from God. Regardless of time, space or circumstance, one should feel closeness to God – that is Bhakti. True devotion transcends the limitations imposed by one’s daily routines and the obligations of life.

Spiritual progress is not merely an intellectual exercise. It is right living, good conduct and moral behaviour. It is the natural outcome of belief in a good, just and compassionate God who is watching and witnessing every act. So faith in an Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent God is the first requisite for a good life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Dharma is universal. There is a test that may be applied to any action to determine if it is according to Dharma. Let not your deeds harm or injure another. This flows from the recognition that the divine spark is the same in every form, and if you injure another you are injuring the same divinity that is in yourself. Dharma enables you to come to the recognition that anything that is bad for another form is also bad for you. The test of Dharmic action is stated very clearly in saying: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

Engage yourselves in selfless service. The reward for it will come of its own accord. Do not have any doubts on this score. This is the virtue that you have to cultivate. Acquire this true wealth. Without goodness, all other riches are of no avail.

The refinement of life calls for continuous spiritual practice. Without such practice, life gets degraded. For instance, a diamond gets enhanced in value when it goes through the process of cutting and faceting. Likewise, gold, taken out as ore from the earth, becomes pure and valuable after refinement. In the same manner, Sadhana (spiritual practice) is necessary to elevate life from the trivial to the sublime.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man is not aware of the grand goal of his pilgrimage. He is straying into wrong roads which lead him only to disaster. He places his faith in objects outside himself and strives to derive joy from and through them. He does not know that all the joys spring forth from inside him; he only invests the outer objects with his own joy drawn from inside him. He envelopes the outer objects with his inner joy and then, experiences it as though it is from that outer object.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
How to keep in constant contact with the Higher Self within us? The best means is the simple exercise of Naamasmarana, the repetition of any one of the glorious Names of the Lord. People indulge in all types of purposeless gossip and scandal; they find time and interest in these degrading pursuits; but, they have no inclination to awaken the Divine in them by constant dwelling on the splendour of Creation and the Creator. See only such scenes as will foster this discipline; speak only of elevating subjects; listen only to ennobling topics; think and feel only pure thoughts and emotions. That is the way to develop the Divinity inherent in each one.

When a plane flies across the sky, it leaves no mark on it, no streak that lasts, no furrow or pothole that interferes with further traffic. What is Jnana or wisdom? It is to know your own true self, that is, self knowledge. Self knowledge is Self realization. Jnana calls for the control of thoughts by appropriate efforts. Constant contemplation on the Self is the means of experiencing the direct vision of God, and Bhakthi (devotion) is the means to achieve it. Whether one takes to the Jnana-Marga (the path of wisdom) or the Bhakti Marga (the path of Devotion), the goal is the same, illumination.

If a lamp is kept burning in a room, it may go out when winds blow in from the open windows. The Indhriyas (sense organs) are the windows and when they are open, the lamp of the Divine Name will not burn steadily. So keep the outgoing senses closed to the influences that distract, and concentrate on the Name of the Lord and its beauty and sweetness. By simply shouting Shivoham (I am Shiva), you cannot become Lord Shiva; develop the qualifies of Divinity like Universal Love, absence of attachment, etc. Then, you will be entitled to assert "Shivoham", for you will have no Aham (ego) then!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Vice breeds disease. Evil thoughts and habits, bad company and unsuitable food are the main causes of ill-health. Arogya (good health) and Ananda (happiness) go hand in hand. When the mind is happy, the body too is free of disease. Evil habits, which men indulge in, are the chief causes of diseases, physical as well as mental. Greed affects the mind; disappointment makes man depressed. Man can justify his existence only by the cultivation of virtues. Only then does he become a worthy candidate for Godhood.

This is so interesting. I never heard about this before. We all know that God is everywhere but does it make you sad to know that in a few years Sai Baba will give up his physical body? Will he willfully give up his body the way the yogis did or does he know that he will leave in some other fashion?
I really have never heard anyone speaking about how Sathya Sai Baba will leave the body. I vaguely rememeber someone saying he will just disappear one day, but I can' t remember when or where I heard that. It could be something I imagined in my mind, I don't know.

When an iron filing comes in contact with a magnet, the iron filing also gets the properties of a magnet. Likewise, the knower of Brahman (the Universal Absolute) becomes Brahman. You are all children of immortality, you are eternal. The relationship between you and God is eternal. The body changes through many births, but the mind and deeds continue from birth to birth. Just as an accountant totals the accounts of the day and carries the balance over onto the next day, our mind follows to the next life. You should be able to control the mind by controlling the senses, then you can merge in truth and experience oneness with God.

Compassion towards all creatures is the greatest virtue; wilful injury to any creature is the worst vice. Know this to be true; spread love and joy through compassion, and be full of joy and peace yourself. You do not have joy and peace now, mainly because your vision is warped and blurry. It is directed towards the faults and failings of others, instead of towards one’s own. Really speaking, inquiry and investigation should begin with oneself. Human existence is enveloped in infatuation (Moha). When one frees oneself from this infatuation, one will be able to experience true happiness. This infatuation breeds egoism and possessiveness, which bring about the loss of one’s name and fame. One who is filled with ego will be unable to experience love from others. It is therefore essential to overcome this infatuation. By conquering infatuation, one becomes endearing to others.

The Deha (body) is a vehicle that even gods aspire to possess. You know that gods seek to come into human form so that they could utilise the intelligence, discrimination, detachment, etc., that the human body alone is capable of exercising, to realise the Ultimate Reality, which when known makes everything else known. If only he intensifies his thirst for God, he can live in perpetual content, instead of grovelling in perpetual discontent, pining for trivial satisfactions. The lotus in the heart of man pines for the Sun, the splendour of the Lord. But to attain it is hard. Withdrawal of all affection towards the world alone can win it. God is the nearest and dearest entity, but ignorance hides Him from the eye. The love that God bears man is unequalled; yet, He appears to man as a distant, formidable, unapproachable phenomenon. The stars appear as dots of light, for they are at a great distance from us. So too God appears insignificant or ineffective to many, because they are keeping themselves too far from Him. Education does not consist in the accumulation of information and facts from a multitude of books. Reading of books can only enrich you in the information that you may gather but can never give or promote good qualities. Good education is a process by which character is improved and by which one will be able to use one's intelligence and sharpen one's mind so as to distinguish right from wrong. It is only when the contents of education are closely linked with ideals of sacrifice, forbearance, truth, and love that the youth will get the benefit of education. You are awake when you feel that you have full knowledge; but, when awake, you are aware only of the many, not of the One. It is only when you are in deep sleep that all the multiplicity vanishes; then you are not aware of the world and of your deluded picture of it. Examine even while awake the stages of dream and deep sleep and realise that wakefulness deludes the seeker of Truth; the senses are deceptive; they are inefficient instruments. Mind does not have any powers. The only power is Atma Shakti, the power of Atma. Mind has no form. Mind can be said to be woven of desires. Buddha undertook various spiritual practices in order to realize his true Self. But none of these practices could show him the path to Nirvana (liberation). Ultimately, he realized that Nirvana lies in making use of the five senses in a sacred manner. He understood that Japa (repetition of God’s name), Dhyana (meditation), Yajna (ritual of sacrifice), Yoga, etc. were mere physical activities. These spiritual practices are needed only for those who are attached to the body. One who abides in the Self need not undertake any of these practices. Buddha taught that Nirvana can be attained only by cultivating Samyak Drishti (sacred vision), Samyak Vaak (sacred speech), Samyak Shravanam (sacred listening), Samyak Bhavam (sacred feeling) and Samyak Kriya (sacred action).

The chief goal of man is to practice and propagate the principle of truth. One has to practise truth before preaching it. Come what may, one should have the courage and conviction to tread the path of truth. Even at the cost of food, raiment and shelter, even at the cost of one’s own life, one should be prepared to practise truth and righteousness.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Dwell always on noble thoughts. When air fills a balloon, it takes the form of the balloon. The mind assumes the form of the objects with which it is attached. If it gets fixed on petty things, it becomes petty; if on grand things, it becomes grand. The camera takes a picture of whatever it is pointed at; so take care before you click. Discriminate before you develop attachment. When you develop attachment towards family, wealth, properties, etc., you will come to grief when these decline. But if you develop attachment towards God, you will grow in love and splendour.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Man has in him the capacity to grow into a pure Divine personality. But, due to ignorance and waywardness, he has become stunted. He has chained himself to low ideals and so, he has fallen into fear and grief. The Upanishads exhort man to awaken and become master of himself - "Utthishtta, jaagratha, praapya vaaraan nibodhatha!" (Arise, Awake and stop not until the goal is reached!). Man is overcome by the sleep of ignorance and has forgotten the true values of life. He is obsessed only with material progress. Unless he is awakened to the spiritual values of life, there cannot be any peace and prosperity in the world.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The flames of anger, pride, hatred, envy are more devastating than other fires; they arise in the mind stealthily and in spurts; they are ever demanding more and more to feed upon. Fire is called 'Anala' in the Bhagavad Geetha, for 'Anala' means, 'not enough'. You dread fire when it leaps at a distance; what then is to be said when it is inside your very self? How to put out these awful flames? Well, Sanathana Dharma (the ancient spiritual code) has certain extinguishers tested by experience and guaranteed by sages. They are Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love). Saturate your heart with these and you are rendered 'fireproof'.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Anger and hatred are useful sometimes like the hiss of the cobra to keep the intruders away. They can be used to ward off the evil that stalks the Sadhaka (spiritual aspirant). Be angry at things that hinder your spiritual growth; hate the bad habits that torment you. Cultivate Jnana (Supreme Knowledge) and visualise the Lord in all the things and activities. That makes the human birth worthwhile. Do not seek faults in others; for 'others' are but manifestations of the Lord you are seeking to realise. It is your own fault that you see reflected in others.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Two things are essential for happy life. Dhaanya and Dhyaana. Dhaanya (food grains) for the sustenance of the body and Dhyaana (meditation) for entering the temple of the Lord within you and merging in His Glory. The sages of yore retired into the silence of the forest and by means of hard mental toil won for mankind the great treasure of spiritual experience and inspiration. The reason for their taking refuge in lonely places was to keep the senses away from things that delight and distract, to escape the infection that will damage the springs of joy. Their sole purpose was to learn the secret of liberation for the benefit of humanity.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Know that the real 'You' is deathless; make death a sublime act of liberation. Such knowledge can come only through a life devoted to Dharmanishta (steady pursuit of the moral code) and Karmanishta (steady devotion to the duties of one's stage of life). These two must end in the evolution of Brahmanishta - the steady contemplation of the One Basis of all this seeming multiplicity, namely, Brahman. The Nishta (discipline) becomes steady by practice and your separate individual existence is merged in the great deluge of wisdom, which merges you in Him.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Bhakti (devotion) is defined as a means of discovering the Divine reality within each being. Four steps are laid down in the scriptures to help man succeed in this effort - discrimination between the permanent and the ephemeral; withdrawal from the process of catering to the senses; positive control of the feelings, thoughts and pursuits, and incessant yearning for liberation from all bonds. Bhakti is the urge which manifests as all these four endeavours. It directs man to have God ever in mind and to cultivate love for God within him.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The Universe is the field where God sports. Be aware of this fact in every moment of consciousness and there is nothing more you need for a happy existence. For, you will then contact God in everything, through every thought, at every place and at very moment. His glory is evident in the smallest flower and the most distant star. The joy that you can derive from the contemplation of these proofs of providence is indescribable. Lord Krishna has said in the Bhagavad Geetha that He is ever by the side of the joyous being. Be joyful yourself and share it with others. Limited happiness arising out of self-centeredness should be given up.

^^^ That's so beautiful. We are never alone because God is everywhere. :D
God is our best and only friend on whom we can count one hundred percent of the time. Faith in God alone is the best means for developing this unending friendship.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The Lord will protect in all ways and at all times those who worship Him in complete and uncontaminated Bhakti (devotion), just like a mother who protects her infants, a cow protects her calves and the eyelids protect the eyes, effortlessly and automatically. When the infant grows up, the mother need not pay as much attention to its safety as before. So, too, the Lord does not pay much attention to the Jnani (man of wisdom).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Who are My real Bhaktas (devotees)? Those with Viveka (discrimination), Vairagya (renunciation), Vijnana (wisdom) and Vinaya (humility), who are aware of the knowledge of Reality, who are always immersed in the contemplation of My Leela (glories), who dwell on My name at all times and under all circumstances and who shed tears of love whenever the Lord's name is heard from any lip - they are My genuine Bhaktas.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Atma Jnana (spiritual wisdom) can be won only by giving up Vasanas (impulses), transcending the mind and analysing one's experiences to grasp the Reality. Without these three, Jnana will not dawn. Firstly, give up all impure impulses and cultivate the pure ones. Then gradually try to give up even these and render the mind completely devoid of any desire. Shanti (peace) thus attained is effulgent, blissful and filled with wisdom. It is indeed the experience of Godhead.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
One may ask, if God is controlling everything, what is the need for human effort? Yes, God is all powerful. But at the same time human effort is also necessary, for without it man cannot enjoy the benefit of God's grace. It is only when you have both Divine grace and human endeavour that you can experience bliss, just as you can enjoy the breeze of a fan only when you have both a fan and electric power to operate it.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Great sages, out of great sympathy for their fellowmen, laid down rules, regulations, limits and directions for daily life and conduct, so that man's mind may not turn against him, but may turn towards the ideals of Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love). They declared that every act must be evaluated and approved only if it cleanses the emotions and passions, otherwise it has to be cast aside. Bhaavashuddhi (purification of mental disposition) is the fruit of Karma (action) and any act that befogs the Bhaava (thought process) or excites it into Rajas (passion) or demeans it into Thamas (inertia) has to be avoided.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God certainly listens to the prayers of His devotees. Some people hesitate to pray lest their prayers should cause inconvenience to God. They are mistaken in their belief, for God can never be put to any inconvenience whatsoever. God has no suffering at all. He considers the devotees' happiness as His own.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Service is God. Why has God endowed man with a body, a mind and an intellect? Feel and empathise with the suffering through your mind, plan using your intelligence and use the body to serve those are in need. Offer that act of service to God; worship Him with that flower. Put into daily practice the ideals that Sai has been propagating and make them known all over the world by standing forth as living examples of their greatness.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
There are four types of people: the 'dead', who deny the Lord and declare that they alone exist, independent, free, self-regulating and self-directed; the 'sick', who call upon the Lord whenever some calamity befalls them or whenever they feel temporarily deserted by the usual sources of succour; the 'dull', who know that God is the eternal companion, but who remember it only off and on, when the idea presents itself powerfully; and lastly, the 'healthy', who have steady faith in the Lord and who live in His comforting presence always.

Which one are you?
What cults, very sick men and godmen do continuously to help the poor and others, globally, for over seventy years. Can a single complainant provide such comfort and selfless service? How about examining such free services as free education at every level, water for millions in thousands of villages, building model projects for self-help, providing free hospital and medical care, developing mobile health and eye care, teaching street cleaning with emphasis on public health and hygiene, maintaining and coordinating a cadre of volunteers for emergency needs, teaching value education, offering self healing of every kind, etc. Many of these god men/women never take a vacation or live in luxury. Can anyone of us begin to even match a sliver of such noble deeds by just trying to model a small aspect of these projects aimed at helping the poor and needy?

"Being of service to your patients is My Padnamaskar. I cannot give you anything higher than that."
Dr. Joseph G Phanenf in the book "Inspired Medicine" page 243. Baba said the above words to a group of doctors from abroad
The Sri Sathya Sai Mobile Medicare Project was launched on the 20th of April, 2007 is a shining example of the Immense Power of Bhagawan's Grace.
The project is proactive by nature with the basic aim of improving the quality of life of the poorest of the poor through various means in an integrated manner with prime focus on their health and physical well being, As Bhagawan has often said "Don't wait for the opportunity to serve, go out and grab the opportunity which is already available"
Starting initially in a very humble manner, the project has moved from strength to strength. As of 31st March 2008, over 25,447 patients covering 7,103 families were provided with free medical aid and treated for various aliments. The medical dispensary visited 17 centres on a regular basis as per a fined timetable and more centres have been identified where regular service activities will be initiated shortly.
Keeping in mind Bhagawan's words that effort to serve must spring from a concern for the suffering of others and the service must be a genuine effort to get rid of that anguish, several new initiatives are constantly being taken to improve the range and quality of services under the project. A massive effort is being undertaken to fight malnutrition particularly among children and women.
No words are capable of expressing our gratitude to Bhagawan for this rare privilege He has given us of rendering selfless service to suffering humanity and to be a part of His Divine Plan as it unfolds,
