Oils are know in many cultures to have healing powers and other beneficial effects. I remember clearly how the natives of Venezuela brought oil as an offering to provide a soothing balm to my brother on his dying bed. The bringing of the soothing balm in itself brought me feelings of mystical wellness, as I watched the natives bring their offerings. That mysticism, itself, can have the power of changing one of the four patterns of brian waves (alpha, beta, teta and delta) for receptivity to healing and wellness. Every culture has its own forms or patterns of healing, and mutual learning and teaching are carried out universally. (http://digilander.libero.it/divx/Brainw.html)
Thy faith hath made thee whole is the message of Jesus, as the healer who brings about trance-like states that alter brain wave patterns and create receptive modes of healing. Faith in God and deities of God, mantras, prayers, herbs, hymns, scents, etc., can change body vibrations and patterns of frequency, and bring about desired outcomes.
The planetary systems (nine important planets) are thought by many Hindus to be regions that affect the human body. Wellness and ill health are thought to be brought about by their positions and alignments in the planetary system. When physical and mental problems arise, deities of the heavenly systems are thought to be susceptible to appeasement, and pundits and astrologers are consulted to correct some of these problems to the extent that faith in prayers and rituals exists.
Other Hindus believe that the wellness of the universe and the planetary systems also have corresponding effects on the human body which is a parallel universe of its own, as each human body is believed to represent a microcosm of the universe. Whatever is believed to be done to appease the presiding deities of the universe also appeases the presiding deities of the human systems of functioning.
When the systems of the body are manipulated with herbs, oils, mantras, prayers, music, hymns, medicine, yoga, etc., they can change the vibrational patterns of the body, and bring about or cause proper patterns of beathing, heart functioning, awakening of energy vortexes (chakras), and other alignments that keep the body in good shape. Other Hindus believe in Ayuvedic forms of healing by manipulating the "doshas" which must be in balance for the well functioning of the body. http://www.ayurbalance.com/explore_arti ... doshas.htm (http://www.ayurbalance.com/explore_articlethreedoshas.htm).
The passages below are taken from the Prasnopanishads and provide a little understanding of the presiding deities that govern body functions.
Akasa (space/sound), Vayu (wind), Agni (fire), Jala (water), Bhumi (earth) - the elements which compose the body have their presiding deities; the activating senses like speech and the "knowing" senses like the eye also have their deities which reside in them and promote their functions: the mind and the intellect too have their deities; they all are pillars which support the Being and prevent the structure of the body from falling asunder.
The body is a complex produced by a combination of the 5 elements. The Jnanendriyas (sense perceptions and organs) are the consequences of this combination. So the body is a bundle of consequences and causes. Like the spokes of the wheel, they are fixed in the hub of Prana (life force). So too, the Riks, the Yajurvedic manthras, the Sama-vedic manthras, the Yajnas where they are employed, the Kshathra which protects the people from danger, the Brahmanic Force consecrating the Yajnas, ... all these are of the nature of Prana.
When Prajapathi becomes the Cloud and pours rain, all beings rejoice and are enabled to live. "All things that contribute to happiness are bound to You; cherish us therefore as the Mother. You cause all wealth and welfare, related to spiritual and physical protection. Give us that wealth and that wisdom". This is the prayer addressed to Prajapathi. The Rig, Yajus, Sama manthras are the Brahmanic wealth; riches are the Kshatriya wealth. Thus, the Upanishad elaborates on the Prana Prajapathi and its Functions and Attributes.
