What a game? That touchdown in the fourth quarter-brilliant-Arizona almost had it-they came back to the brink of defeat. WHAT A GAME?

It was a good game, boring for the most part but ended up quite nicely.

It's the first time that I have supported the Steelers after what they did to Joe Gilliam.

http://www.workers.org/ww/2001/gilliam0118.php

The third Black quarterback to enter the NFL was Joe Gilliam Jr., also known as "Jefferson Street Joe." Gilliam died of an apparent heart attack on Dec. 25, just four days shy of his 50th birthday.

Gilliam was an All-American quarterback at Tennessee State University. The predominantly Black college is known for its track and field athletes--including the great sprinter Wilma Rudolph.

Gilliam was an 11th-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1972. He sat on the bench for two years.

Unfortunately, he was forced to scab during a pre-season strike by NFL players in order to showcase his abilities. Steelers Coach Chuck Noll made an offer to Gilliam to compete for the starting quarterback position. The first-string quarterback, Terry Bradshaw, who is white, was out on strike.

Gilliam became the Steelers' starting quarterback in 1974. For the first six games, he had a winning record.

But Gilliam soon found out that being a Black quarterback meant more than just having a winning record. It meant that he had to prove time and time again that he was superhuman in the eyes of the white Pittsburgh fans and sports critics.

During the only loss while Gilliam was the quarterback, fans chanted, "We want Bradshaw." During media call-in shows, racist fans would make disparaging remarks about Gilliam.

Gilliam's reaction to this racism was: "'I was totally shocked. I thought if you played well, you got to play. I guess I didn't understand the significance of being a Black quarterback at the time." (New York Times, Dec. 27, 2000)

Gilliam received numerous death threats. He stated that his apartment was filled with a pile of hate letters three feet high and three feet wide. Three Rivers Stadium, the former home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, received bomb threats while Gilliam was the quarterback.

In response to all this racist pressure, he turned to drugs and alcohol. Gilliam subsequently benched himself and turned over his starting job to Bradshaw.

The Steelers dropped him in 1975. He never played for another NFL team.

The half time show was great. I also saw some US viewers got some free porn thrown in. The cable company was probably give a free preview of the "Super Bowl and Super Nasty Package".

Zack,

Football has come a long way and now we have head coaches and Presidents of African descent-but I remember the days.

I do not agree that the game was boring in the beginning-The Steelers had a fantastic start and should have capitalised. I would have gone for the touchdown on the 4th down in the first quarter. Arizona is a great team and what a fight back-that 100yd interception return and that fourth quarter catch by Holmes-WOW-What a game.

Best Super Bowl I have seen in a long while .While the Steelers were a physically stronger team , the Cardinals came right at them and almost won .

It sure has come a long way, eh.

Look at Tampa Bay's new coach.

That super bowl game is probably the best that I have seen.

Although, I will readily admit that I enjoyed the Redskins shellacking of Denver when Doug Williams was the skins quarterback and John Elway was the All American boy.

'In response to all this racist pressure, he turned to drugs and alcohol. Gilliam subsequently benched himself and turned over his starting job to Bradshaw.'

i guess the steelers were right to give bradshaw the starting job. imagine if jackie robinson turned to drugs and alcohol in response to the racist pressure he must have felt.

also, the steelers did win four super bowls with bradshaw....i guess they made the right choice and chose the stronger man for the job.

Gilliam asked to be benched after receiving all those death threats. After that, the pressure made him turn to drugs.

You wouldn't know since Gilliam wore size 12s and you wear size 8s.

also, the steelers did win four super bowls with bradshaw....i guess they made the right choice and chose the stronger man for the job.

The Steelers didn't win four super bowls with Bradshaw. The Steelers play football not lawn tennis. The Steelers won four super bowls with Franco Harris, Lynn Swan, John Stallworth, Mel Blount, Joe Green, Ernie "Fats" Holmes, and over 40 other great athletes.

size 9 actually, and i never had a drug problem and broke into houses too.

'The Steelers didn't win four super bowls with Bradshaw.'

ummm...yeah they did. at no time did i write that bradshaw won four superbowls for the steelers, so i guess the steelers did in fact win four superbowls WITH bradshaw.
