Doc's in the house....... tell us about the "staph bug". They say it could be worse than AIDS and it can enter the body through a mere pimple or other skin abrasions. Only very recently a 15 year old child met his demise from this in Virginia. They say he contracted this bug at school.

Actually, the 'superbug' that's been on the news lately has been around for sometime. It's a bacteria called Staphylococcus areus. The usual strain that is susceptible to antibiotics is bad enough. The problem is that a strain that is resistant to antibiotics (AKA MRSA, meaning 'medically resistant Staphylococcus areus') is becoming more prevalent. This is a DIRECT result of overuse of antibiotics. It's extremely hard to kill, as what will kill the bacteria will generally kill the patient. Frightening stuff!

NoorJehan, I was impressed that species and genus were always italicised, notwithstanding the incorrect spelling. When it came to the medically-resistant though, are you saying that the Staph is resistant to medical something?? :P

Methicillin-resistant (MR)
