'All for one' card, video conferencing in T&T's future

By next year you will be able to use one card as your national identification card, your driver's permit and your grocery "smart card," says Minister of Public Administration Kennedy Swaratsingh.

"That's what we're moving to now, like a centralised system," he added while speaking recently at the National Information Communications and Technology Symposium, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain

The card will also contain biometric data. Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring and analysing biological data.

In information technology, biometrics refers to technologies that measure and analyse human body characteristics, such as fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, voice patterns, facial patterns and hand measurements, for authentication purposes.

While Swaratsingh said they are not sure which national card they will adapt to suit the proposed "all for one" purpose, he did say, "By the beginning of next year will be able to say more on it."

He also said they were looking to set up a system by which prisoners could appear in court virtually, via video conferencing, rather than having the daily toil of transporting prisoners under maximum security to and from the courts, every time they have to appear before a magistrate.

The Minister assured that this system is used in several countries, including the United Kingdom.

This is not in response to ur question, and I believe there is another thread on surveillance of citizens generally, but I have to say, out of everything read so far, this caused some raised eyebrows:


The Minister assured that this system is used in several countries, including the United Kingdom.

So many implications in that one statement.
