View Full Version : Are You Happy With The Awards Given To The Olympic Winners?

Today our olympic medal winners returned home and was given the Royal treatment for a job well done at the 2008 olympics.

Our boys will be receiving the nations second highest award along with $250,000 in units at the unit trust and $500,000 cash in hand and when we thought that was all, we were told that Richard Thompson will be receiving an additional $250,000.

Are we impress with that or more should be given or something is missing?

I think it was an adequate award; they deserve every penny of it.

It seems fitting enough.

Does the government fund the training of these athletes to the extent that Manning was boasting about?

Patrick we are still waiting on the George Bovell Acquatic center.

So Thompson got $250,000.00 for his 100m race in which he competed against the BEST in the world. To me the relay race was not in the same class as the 100m because two of more stronger teams were disqualified posing less of a challenge for the other teams in the final.

If we are setting precedents for future athletes to aim for then I find he should have gotten more. In other words he got less for his best individual effort..Maybe his reward was small because he was part of another medal winning team...Others may disagree...

Pretty sure you hit it on the head right there.
I think they worked hard and did well and do deserve the money.

However, I also think that our facilities need more funding if we're to produce athletes on our own rather than have them grown here and then forced to mature in foreign territory (and this applies to almost all our sports, not just the Olympic ones).

If they can spend 175 million on a house (and "conference centre"), the government had better start shelling out for the "little people" too.

I think a scholarship/grant should have been set up in their name with a certain amount going to the up and coming athletes of the country to assist in their training. I honestly believe we can have a lot more stars if kids had the resources required for serious training.

Maybe because we all read our student's companion in school and we know that "it have poor people starving in TT" is bad gramma.

Have you read your student's companion lately, Falcon ?

If you were as astute as you are a smartrass then you'd have also noticed the lack of a starting capital letter, the missing quotation marks and the mis-use of the comma in the middle there.....somewhere.

(and this from the person who just said "Should Candidates Family Life be...")

True, but it's much more fun to be a smartrass than to be astute

Not a joke.

Is a response based on the fact that you REFUSE to take any other factor into consideration when giving me your opinion on this! Even when I suggest the other factor(s)!

Remember SBAs? Lets say we had a group project to do and one guy worked particularly hard on it and mainly through his efforts we all got an 'A'. Now, when it comes to the written exams he gets sick and misses the exam but I go on and write the exam and do well and get all A's. Should the other members of my study group, esp the sick guy, be given scholarships too bec they were in part responsible for good grades?

Nice try, but not enough similarities.

Darrel Brown and Marc Burns have run consistently for the past few years, and there have been a host of supporting acts (with all due respect to everyone else on that team) joining them from time to time. The lack of recognition was, in my opinion, in poor taste. Even the money didnt really matter. Just a note, a snippet about the contribution Darrel made. The whole thing ended up looking like a never see come see thing....Now I dont begrudge the other guys rewards...not in the least...they deserved every bit of it, and more!!! But when you have an athlete that was the fastest of his age group at the time, what was it.....fastest 16, 17, 18 year old.........and delivered in many forums, and was an integral part of making us a force in the relays........I think he deserves some lip service at least.

He didnt ask for nutting, ala some others.
He didnt have agents asking for him, ala some others........until now of course.

Is bad enough having so many olympians and not celebrating them all on their return. It is worse when you win on someone's back, and dont praise them.

Ok :?
I should mention that I dont follow sports and have no idea what went on prior to the actual wins.
I gather however, that u are a big fan and avid supporter....and thus blinded by your fervour
Ok, just kidding there. If he did all u say he did then I agree that he deserves some recognition. And I think a large part of that should have come from those who 'won on his back' according to u.

Ah still doh find he shoulda get money eh.
Ah mean, if we going that route then anybody could come forward and ask that their contribution be quantified and rewarded too.
