View Full Version : Metrosexuals

So, Sunday morning, while my mom was chatting with one of brother's friends, she noticed his eyebrows were done. Done in the sense that it had a 'just waxed' look. Sunday afternoon was spent reassuring my mother that the world has not indeed gone mad. Needless to say, she had a hard time understanding the concept of metrosexual and how its different from being gay.

Whats your take on it? I just think its a reflection of the fact that the fashion world is no longer focussed on women and as more designers cater to men, men would be more fashion concious. Some would inculcate the entire 'look', which would include groomed brows.

Men in today's society are alot more conscious about their looks, personality, how others view them and so fort.....and the media has not only created this perception of masculinity, they have enhanced it. If you notice as well, there are men's magazines which talks about fashion, what men should wear on special occassions etc....even if you go to the groceries and pharmacies....you have special soaps, shampoos and other 'skin' products designed for men.

The whole concept of masculinity has been revolutionising......but all that started I believe from the family and the fact that women in alot of families have now taken over as the main breadwinner of the household, leaving men displaced and having to change the 'male' ideals.

this is a lot more common in younger men, and i agree with 007, the whole ideal of the male concept is changing. It is more acceptable in the younger generation as well, my mom wld also have the same reaction as your mom did but i guess for us its just natural to see these things.

I’m all for a guy taking care of himself but if he takes longer that I do getting dressed to go out then he’s entered the creepy zone. Good Lord imagine sitting on some guy’s couch waiting for half an hour while he primps. There’s only so much metro I can stand.

but ummmm 007 i disagree about the displacement of the man from the breadwinner role in the household being the reason for the rise of the 'metro' tendancy.

I more agree with the perception of masculinity evolving over the years, but i blame (yes here it comes) the media for this...men were being influenced by the media lot more in the 90's than ever before. (whispers GQ magazine) Men have become more narcissistic. There is always something about the way you present yourself that sais alot about your personality. Men are more concious about what their appearance sais about them.
In the animal kingdom (especially in Birds) its the male with the best display that wins the female......

If you think about it, men were pretty well groomed most of the time (after the John Wayne era) admittedly the clothes have gotten a little tighter and more tailored to fit the body. Now the tee shirts and jeans are purposely washed out and frayed on the end for the 'vintage' look, the hair has a style besides 'combed' and shaving with soap has been replaced with gillette or nivea total skin care...
but more than that...the 'metro' man simply cares about how he looks and takes an interest even if he wears a trucker (von dutch) cap with italian bowling shoes, armani jeans and a joe hardy or monarchy embroidered tee...

ah think shaving yuhself and puttin on ah lil cologne is something I think 99% of men do...but what I believe Serenity is trying to bring up here is when they go the extra mile to put on face powder/maybe some foundation and do like Shaquille O' Neal does at times....put on a lil eye liner and ting too...coupled with some nice earings.....that is when the label of a metrosexual does come in.

The reason why I brought up the argument about men being displaced as the 'breadwinner' was because from sociological studies and even in the hippie movement days, men's roles in society actually began to change when women started leaving the homes and entering into the workplace. There is no direct link between men being displaced in the family and the metrosexual man but a man's changing role in the household can be fitted into that long chain which can explain the emergence of new masculinities.

Somebody, I think that behaviour u describe borders on transexual. Mets are the well dressed (designer only), well groomed (manicures, pedicures, body wax) guys. Actually, I dont see many with earrings. They're the male version of the woman whose nails are always done and hair always impeccable and their stockinged feet step daintily in stiletto heels. No body hair in sight.

The origin of the term can be traced to an article titled “Here come the mirror men”,[1] dissecting them by Mark Simpson, published on November 15, 1994, in The Independent, a major British daily newspaper. He was quoted in this as writing,

Metrosexual man, the single young man with a high disposable income, living or working in the city (because that’s where all the best shops are), is perhaps the most promising consumer market of the decade. In the Eighties he was only to be found inside fashion magazines such as GQ, in television advertisements for Levis jeans or in gay bars. In the Nineties, he’s everywhere and he’s going shopping with Mark Sullivan a big butch aircraft engineer.

The key to the current popularity of the term is Simpson’s 2002 Salon.com article “Meet the metrosexual” which proffered David Beckham as the metrosexual posterboy, despite this not being a completely accurate representation. The huge advertising agency Euro RCSG Worldwide adopted the term shortly thereafter for a marketing study, and the New York Times made it a Sunday feature, “Metrosexuals Come Out”; the story trickled into local news outlets across North America.

Simpson’s Salon.com definition is more nuanced from metrosexual’s common use today. His article was detached, wittily ironic, with more than a dash of anti-corporate disdain, and his definition exists outside the gay-straight style binary that defines the boundaries of fashion for many Americans –

“The typical metrosexual is a young man with money to spend, living in or within easy reach of a metropolis – because that's where all the best shops, clubs, gyms and hairdressers are. He might be officially gay, straight or bisexual, but this is utterly immaterial because he has clearly taken himself as his own love object and pleasure as his sexual preference. Particular professions, such as modeling, waiting tables, media, pop music and, nowadays, sport, seem to attract them but, truth be told, like male vanity products and herpes, they're pretty much everywhere. For some time now, old-fashioned (re)productive, repressed, unmoisturized heterosexuality has been given the pink slip by consumer capitalism. The stoic, self-denying, modest straight male didn't shop enough (his role was to earn money for his wife to spend), and so he had to be replaced by a new kind of man, one less certain of his identity and much more interested in his image – that's to say, one who was much more interested in being looked at (because that's the only way you can be certain you actually exist). A man, in other words, who is an advertiser’s walking wet dream.”

So true Somebody, so true.

When u consider it seriously, pants were adopted by women bec it facilitated freer movement. Practicality seem to be the main motive behaind that move. Makeup was traditionally worn by women to highlight their physical appeal since that's how they got men..by how goodlooking they were. Men got women by how rich they were and their social status.

Why are men using makeup now? Emphasis on their ability to provide is arguably lessened since women are now financially independent, so maybe its to appear more physically appealing?

Just like how man evolved from ape into humans through an evolutionary (biological) process, so did his habits and personality over the centuries. I simply view this phase of metrosexual man as taking another course in the existence of manhood. Doh worry nah Serenity, in years to come, man will be exploring the female 'skirt' and how to change it up to fit a man....ah not talking about kilts eh....

Yeah, i dont think that changed much, but then why do men do the makeup thing? I did a professional makeup artistry course (yeah, ah REAL love makeup) and there were discussions on what determines the fashion of the day - makeup-wise. It usually come out of the 'look' that designers choose to portray. They dont only sell the clothes, but also the accessories and the makeup that goes with it. Even hairstyles change accordingly. So I guess guys go for the 'look' as well. And since models wear makeup, it follows logically...u buy the clothes, the shoes, the haircut, u look for a similar girl..and the makeup.
