I have a suggestion, can't someone put together a list of pertinent questions for these candidates to answer to the electorate. Is time that we move beyond rum, roti and peas & rice politics.

First Question:

1 Will the constitution amendments being touted also deal with the Internal Self Government Issue in Tobago and the setting up of the institutions to strengthen governance under such a framework?

THE Congress of the People (COP) has substituted two of its candidates to contest the November 5 General Election. The COP yesterday issued a list of candidates on Nomination Day after the deadline for nominations, which revealed the changes to the original line-up of its October 6 presentation of candidates in San Fernando.

In D’Abadie/O’Meara, Lincoln Douglas is now standing in place of Sherwin Alleyne.

In Laventille West, David St Clair replaces Arthur Augustine, who reportedly stood down because of dual citizenship issues.

Looking at the canididates I realise that UNCA only has 9 females. As opposed to the PNM and CoP with 12. Out of a possible 41 I think this quite low.

This equates to Females: 23%-UNCA, 29%-PNM, 29%-CoP.

Alicia Hospedales is a member of Divine Encounter Christian fellowship (where I attend church) and Apostle vernon Duncan spoke about her on the pulpit. She has a strong chance of winning the seat.

Judging from the last election:
Arouca North----------PNM=13914----------UNC=5040
Arouca South----------PNM=15573----------UNC=3398

Alicia Hospidales (PNM) will not have a problem in the newly created Arouca/Maloney constituency.

Not only her. Just looked at Campaign 41 on channel 6 and Karen Nunez—Tesheira of D’Abadie/O’Meara seems to be someone I would vote for. If the COP placed Gillian Lucky in Point Fortin it would have been a good move IMO.

Can anybody state how many of these have lost a seat before? Some colour coding would be nice. :D

So far, I have found from last election alone:
Dr. J. Jones-Kernahan (UNC) - Arima
Wayne Rodriguez (DPTT) - Arouca South
Carson Charles (UNC) - Diego Martin Central
Steve Alvarez (DPTT) - Diego Martin East
Rocky Garcia (CA) - Diego Martin West
Winston Peters (UNC) - Ortoire/Mayaro
Carol Cuffy Dowlat (UNC) - San Fernando East
Sharon Gopaul McNichol (PNM) - St Joseph

Selby Wilson is one we in Point Fortin got from a previous defeat.

Note to Dispatcher: Technically some of the candidates listed under UNC are really of the UNC-A.

No other country has the same size as TT. Delaware is similar to it though.

I'll assume by size you meant pop and not area.

TT has a pop of 1.3 million.

similar sized countries are

East Timor 1.1 million -single chamber (no senate) -65 seats
Mauritius -1.2 million - single house (no senate) 62 seats plus 8 ' at large' MP's
Gabon 1.3 million-- 120 members of lower house and 91 members of senate
Estonia 1.3 million-- single chamber (no senate) 101 seats
Guinea-Bissau--1.6 million single chamber --102 seats

if you mean land area

TT is approx 5000 sq km

Cape Verde as 4000sq km - single chamber -72 seats

Should Panday be listed as the incumbent for Couva North ?

Tobago Boy

I am getting the impression that those new seats is just another means to hold on to power by creating a seat between a marginal and safe seat ensuring another safe seat.

Should Panday be listed as the incumbent for Couva North ?

No. That seat has been declared vacant so that there is no incumbent. The Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal today in this regard, so that the judge was right in holding that the seat was vacated.

I see some interesting statistics from the last general elections here.

This first set is a list of seats UNC had won. The numbers on the right indicate the number of ballots cast.
Chaguanas - 20,462
Caroni Central - 20,452
Caroni East - 19,906
Fyzabad - 19,736
Nariva - 19,059
Couva North - 18,853
Princes Town - 18,846
Couva South - 18,765

This list below is a list of seats that the PNM had won, again with the numbers of the right indicating the total number of votes from that area.
Tobago East - 9,957
Tobago West - 10,497
PoS South - 11,594
Laventille West - 12,163
PoS North/St Ann’s West - 12,112
Diego Martin East - 13,240
Diego Martin Central - 14,262
Diego Martin West - 14,594
Laventille East/Morvant - 14,017
St Ann's East - 15,457

The supposedly smallest seat won by the UNC was Barataria/San Juan which had 15,950 votes cast.

So there were effectively 9 seats that were won by the PNM that were smaller in terms of population, than the smallest UNC seat.

Now i am assuming voter turnout was more less equal in all constituencies. Infact, the voter turnout in the PNM seats were possibly more given the apathetic attitudes of UNC voters last election.

That is grossly unfair to the indian population of the country.

I really would like to see a map of the new 41 constituencies in Trinidad. However, i seriously doubt all those indian areas have been split in two like the PNM western areas.

Knives. I know that you are not unintelligent but cherry picking data is a very stupid thing to do on this forum where other people can check the veracity of your claims. And as my good friend "The Dark" would say "Stop lying....stop it!"

Firstly, voter turnout in the traditionally "safe" PNM areas has always been lower when compared to the "safe" DLP/ULF/UNC areas.

The top 10 constituencies as far as gross voter turnout are as follows:

Ortoire/Mayaro 21,906 - PNM
Chaguanas 20,462 - UNC
Caroni Central 20,452 - UNC
Tunapuna 19,949 - PNM
Caroni East 19,906 - UNC
Fyzabad 19,736 - UNC
Toco/Manzanilla 19,638 - PNM
Arouca South 19,169 - PNM
Nariva 19,059 - UNC
Arouca North 19,028 - PNM

The PNM won 5 and the UNC won 5

All of the top 10 have had their boundaries modified or the constituency split. The EBC uses two main criteria to make changes 1) Number of registered voters and 2) voter turnout.

So in places like Ortoire/Mayaro there are now two (2) - Mayaro and Princes Town South/Tableland

Chaguanas is now East and West.

A big chunk of Tunapuna is now in the new constituency of Lopinot/Bonair West. etc.

Compare this to the three Diego Martin constituencies which had the following voter turnouts starting from East to Central to West - 13,240, 14,262 and 14,594. They have approximately the same number of electors as the others, approx 24,000-27,000, but they have not been split as the voter participation is lower.

So your claim that ".....I seriously doubt all those indian areas have been split in two like the PNM western areas." is just an outright lie!Your argument, which is really a hypothesis that has been proven to be false, is a failed attempt to provide a racial basis for your flawed perceptions.

Now onto real matters. There is a huge shift in population eastwards and in the Cunupia/Chaguanas area. Nothing more and nothing less.

In fact it is now a stated objective of the PNM to increase the voter turnout in places like Laventille, Diego martin and St. Anns and Port-of-Spain as they have "lost" constituencies in 1986 and 1995 with the consolidation of seats due to low turnouts. An example is POS North/St. Anns West. This used to be two separate seats but were consolidated into one. At the same time Caroni East became Caroni East and Caroni Central. The PNM loses one while the UNC gains one.

Finally there is one area that you have failed to address. The PNM has strong support in the strongest UNC areas and although they may lose 2:1 or even 3:1 their candidates do not lose their deposits as in the case of the UNC candidates in Laventille, POS and Diego Martin. That says plenty for the UNC national appeal now doesn't it?
