In her father’s footsteps
By SEETA PERSAD Monday, October 15 2007
RANJANA RAMBACHAN, daughter of Chaguanas Mayor Surujrattan Rambachan, says it’s only natural for her to follow her father into politics since she has been exposed to politics all her life.
Ranjana recently made her political debut on the platform of the UNC Alliance. She later told Newsday she has inherited her father’s passion for politics.
“I grew up listening to my dad arguing on various topics that affect the people, so naturally I became involved in the issues of the day. It was never a case where my father separated his family from his job — the entire family was always involved in whatever he was doing.”
A past student of UWI Prepatory School and Bishop Anstey High School, Ranjana said she was always outspoken at school. She now has an Associate Degree in Management with Distinction from the University of New Brunswick as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Finance and Human Resource Management. She is currently a student at the Institute of Law and Academic Studies — University of London external programme.
Ranjana’s work experience includes a stint with the New Brunswick based bio-technology company Lumin Ultra where she helped develop an export market entry plan for the company to go into New England. She had the opportunity to attend a trade mission to Boston with the International Business and Entrepreneurship Center of UNB and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
She also worked as a co-ordinator for CIBC and UNB Business Plan Competition
In delivering her maiden political speech in Chaguanas for the youth arm of the UNC Alliance, Ranjana spoke on the management of the economy of TT.
During her address she declared: “The natural resources of a country are not the property of any government, it‘s not for them to build a mansion for the Emperor and his wife!
“It is the common wealth of all the people of the country and must therefore be used to enhance the quality of life and happiness of the people while securing the future. As voters, by the power of our vote, we give a mandate, to the government and the officials to manage those resources in our interest.”
She is very critical of the ruling party’s handling of the economy.
“The PNM say they managed the country for 40 years but in my view the way they have managed the economy has not brought about a significant reduction in serious crimes. It has not decreased food prices, it has not impacted upon the vulnerable and the poor, it has not made a real difference in the delivery of health care.
“It has not reduced the hopelessness that exists among the youth population,” she said.
According to Ranjana, the current situation in the country has caused a lot of young people to migrate.
“When the management of an economy and political leadership cannot excite the next knowledge generation to remain and contribute, the competitiveness of that society in a knowledge driven world of the future will be seriously compromised,” she said.
“The policies of the PNM are affecting the competitiveness of our nation. That is what is happening to our youth — we are being driven out of this country,” she related.
Politics now takes up a great deal of Ranjana’s time of energy but she still manages to find time to relax In her spare time she enjoys looking at the Odissi style of classical Indian dance and regularly joins her father in singing religious songs.
And at the end of the day she often reaches for an interesting novel to fall asleep with.
She said one of her earliest memories of political involvement js holding on to her dad in a motorcade in South Trinidad.
“I remember sharing those times with him and I am happy I can now make an imput in the politics of this country,” she said.

Good on her! She is the future of our nation.
I agree totally with her statements ... in particular
“When the management of an economy and political leadership cannot excite the next knowledge generation to remain and contribute, the competitiveness of that society in a knowledge driven world of the future will be seriously compromised,”
since, unfortunately, this applied to me.
