Homicide detectives were bracing themselves last night for what they said could be a bitter reprisal, in wake of yesterday’s killing of former murder accused and reputed drug dealer Merlin “Cudjoe” Allamby, 40.
It was while comforting the relatives of friends—killed two hours before—that Allamby, of Laventille Road in San Juan, was shot dead by gunmen near Sookia Trace.
Dead also are common-law couple Rosanna Seemungal and Raffick “Puna” Mohammed, 59, of Crystal Creek in Lange Park, Chaguanas.
Bar owner Pradeep Ramnine, 48, of Aranguez Main Road in San Juan, remained warded in critical condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope up to late yesterday.
In the first incident around 12.45 am, market vendors Seemungal Mohammed, and Ramnine were standing outside a popular bar on Aranguez Main Road when a gunman rode up on a bicycle and fired several shots at them.
Seemungal and Mohammed died on the spot. They had been shot in their heads.
Ramnine was rushed to hospital after he, too, sustained wounds to the head. Patrons called the police.
The bodies were viewed by the district medical officer and removed to the Forensic Science Centre for autopsies.
After the bodies were removed, Allamby, a father of 11, was standing across the road with relatives around 3.30 am, when a black car pulled up in front of them.
Men alighted from the car and opened fire on Allamby and Lizina Ramdin.
Allamby was shot several times in the head. He, too, died on the spot.
One investigator described Allamby’s killing as a “clever execution and the matter was drug-related.”
Senior police officers have stepped up patrols in the area to curb any reprisals for Allamby’s death.
However, they said Allamby’s killing might trigger further gang violence.
Lizina Ramdin, Mohammed’s sister, said Allamby saved her life while consoling her after her brother was killed.
“He was hugging me and told me to sit in the truck and he kissed the top of my head,” Ramdin said during an interview at the Forensic Science Centre yesterday.
“All I heard was a car and gunshots and he (Allamby) pushed down my head to the ground so I would not get hurt.”
She said Allamby tried to escape behind the Prado, but was shot.
“All I know he ran behind the truck and I saw him fall.”
Ramdin said the couple (Seemungal and Mohammed) had been together for 19 years.
Mohammed, a father of three, and Seemungal, a mother of five, were liming.
She said the family had sold dry goods in San Juan market.
Ramdin said everyone in the area had been friends with Allamby.
Seemungal was described as “a good mother, who spent time cooking and taking care of her family.”
No reprisals, says family
Allamby’s brother, Damian, says he does not want any reprisals for the killing.
“I don’t want anyone to do anything. He wouldn’t want that. He dead; leave it alone.”
When asked about the crime situation, he said:
“It real bad now; it reach home. Crime out of control.”
Asked if his brother had been threatened, he replied: “There was no war; no rival gang; no threats. Nothing like that.”
Damian said he planned to keep up his brother’s birthday next month.
“He always used to like a good lime and lime anywhere. He wanted a big party next month for his birthday, and we still going to have it. The party will go on.”
Ramnine’s relatives were not available for comment
