It depends on what you mean by ' a good place to live'. Jobs, well that would depend on your field. I suggested this to another friend of mine and it was to visit Trinidad before moving and spending 2 weeks of 'living there'. Basically try to get a feel of the place in that period, although short, it's better than second hand opinions.
Welcome to the board by the way!

Welcome to the forum. Before moving to T&T I suggest you read all the TRINIDAD PAPERS, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Talk to friends and family. If possible, go and spend three months. Do not go on a vacation. Do not let people take you around. Rent a car, travel to places you will want to visit frequently, whatever is you hobby, indulge in it. In toto. live there for the time you are there. Do not depend on anyone. I am definitely not even visiting, and i have sisters and brothers, and lots of nieces, nephews, great, and great, great nieces, and nephews there. I criticise T&T a lot. I do it because some of these forumites get real uptight when i do. And i get a good laugh at their expense. However, I would not advise anyone to move back to T&T to live. But that's a decision you will have to make, and live (or die)with. Are you happy in your present location ?, do you have a job paying a living wage ?, do you have heath, and life insurance ?, do you have relatives where you are ?. My relatives are very supportive of my decision not to retire in T&T. OH, by the way I will be in NEW YORK, from this evening, friday 20th to july 2nd. I will be on the boat ride tomorrow june 21st, with NATASHA WILSON, and family. The boat sails from the marina at shea stadium at 11.59 pm. Anyone interested in joining me and the wife for a night of fun, is welcome to send me ah PM.

I thought I was the only one who didn't share the 'love' for all things Trini. I do to some extent, but I simply refuse to turn a blind eye to the hypocrisies of 'our' society. Granted it exists everywhere, Trinidad is entirely too small in size and population to be that saturated with greed, envy, corruption and crime. In bigger metropolitan cities, where the population is in the millions and not million I can understand a level of societal unrest, but not for such a small island.
I said 2 weeks, but the longer you can go there and 'live' the better. Use the maxis and taxis, or drive if you can, go to the bank, go to Pennywise ( I so HATE them, I actually boycotted them totally due to absolutely rude service), go to any public area and experience what it is like to live somewhere where you will never receive any sort of customer service. Mind you, you'll be highly impressed, and so much so you're inspired to buy a thank you card, when you someone actually does their job.
Good luck and whatever decision you make is yours at the end of the day.

Come through Book_worm, come through.
Doh study the sour puss ppl.
Dem does live in cramped apartments with recycled stale air.
Save dey whole life to come spend one week in the sun.
Life in Trinidad can be as good or as bad as any other place - is about how well u can afford the lifestyle u want.
If u have a good job and earning enough to cover your bills and expenses, u good to go.
Remem is a different pace here, a different life here.
So doh come expecting New York.
Come with some positive vibes and try to contribute tomake whichever area yuh settle in, better than when u found it.
Then yuh could post some pics of u hiking or at the beach or drinking a Carib at one of the nightspots and let dem sourpuss eat dey heart out before dey hadda get up from in front the computer to shovel the snow from dey driveway.

somehow, I still prefer to live in a house and not in a cramped apartment. to each his own really. trinidad isnt as glamourous no matter what others might say. the key comment there is you can live the lifestyle you want, once you can afford it. heck, if you have enough money to burn and then some, yea, move, then at least you can afford basic groceries and some other luxury items, like dinners out and so on ;)
I love Trinidad and go there every year just for a visit, I live in a high crime area in the DC/metro area an go about meh business everyday as if it safe and I do the same ting when I in Trini. all in all crime is crime regardless of where you live

Hello bookworm and welcome to this forum in answer to your question I will post what I posted on another thread :
(parody of "Island in the Sun")
This is the Muslimeen's island in the sun
Where crime, murder and kidnapping only just begun
I fled in disgust to foreign seas
Her shores will always be polluted and nasty to me.
Oh banana republic in the sun
Willed to gangsters by Manning’s hand
All my days I will be so dazed
Of your crime, traffic and in-flation.
If morning breaks and you’re still alive
Read the headlines and try not to cry
Children raped and murdered just so
Innocent blood mingles with the earth below.
I see women on bended knee
Being raped in front of their families
I see man at the water side
Importing coke in the surging tide.
(and don’t forget this problem is worldwide)
Every single day that come
More people cut down at the sound of a gun
The parliament is like a carnival
With kicksing, suspensions and bacchanal.
Happy, this island I do not miss
The politicians there are a bunch of pr**ks
Let me stay very very far
For next time they bomb Smokey and Bunty bar.
EVERYBODY SING ALONG NOW …..
[Oh, ] bananna republic in the sun
Willed to gangsters by Manning’s hand
All my days I will be so dazed
Of your crime, traffic and in-flation.

Book_worm, there is a saying in T&T (or at least there was a saying when I lived there 40 years ago)...... Gopaul luck eh Sepaul luck. You have had the benefit of advice both pro and con; I would say ...... go for it; who knows you may go there live for years and find that 'paradise' still exist; you may be fortunate enough to be one of those who lives in Trini and are able to stay safe and secure.
As for me, I prefer to do my homework and the way I would make a decision that could potentially be life threatening is to..... do a quick 'poll'. Ask (or poll) just 20 people on this very forum...... how many of them have, either been a victim of crime, or know someone who has. If you are in the upper 80% huuuum think again; if not, off you go.

THIS SOUR PUSS IS IN NEW YORK, AND HE IS GOING TO A BOATRIDE LEAVING FROM SHEA STADIUM AT MIDNITE TONITE. When was de last time yuh went to a boatride in T&T ?. This sour puss took a bus from OCALA, last week saturday morning, and went to port canaveral (a two-hour ride), caught a casino ship, and gambled for four hours. When was de last time yuh went on a ship ? This sour puss will be in new york having a ball, while i take care of de grandchildren. This sour puss's daughter is on business in london, and her children(my grandchildren) are in DELAWARE, by their cousins (her brother's children,my grandchildren). I will be back in OCALA, on the second of july, to celebrate july fourth. IF you live to be a hundred years, and i die tomorrow, you will not have as much fun as this sour puss. When last did you sleep with a window open in a house that didn't have burglarproof ? i did last nite in the big apple. ANDY WILLIAMS tried to make a contribution, and look what they did to his wife, and home. Whilst yuh are at your computer late at nites., do yuh have your windows open ?, THIS SOUR PUSS DOES. Do you walk the streets of T&T late at nite ? THIS SOUR PUSS WALKS THE STREET OF DE BIG APPLE, AND OCALA LATE AT NITE. Do you wear jewelry ? THIS SOYR PUSS DOES. Do you walk the streets of T&T counting your money, when yuh withdraw it ? THIS SOUR PUSS DOES THAT IN OCALA. BUT, I AM NOT STUPID, I WOULDN'T DO IT IN DE BIG APPLE. SHUTUP IT'S 8.30 pm make sure your windows are locked, and de drapes are down. The sun is still up in de big apple.

if you have goos reason to head back to TnT go for it man! i just returned after 6 years in the cold with my family. But i returned to a top job, financial security and good arrangements for the safety of my family (housing in a gated, secure area etc). Mind you, i left a sucessful job in DC. I am not regretting it at all but the truth is, that it is a big adjustment. Not a bad adjustment, just a different adjustment. And i do support the sentiment of some on this forum who believe that there are many sourpusses out there in NY and elsewhere. I know many of them. They never amounted to a pile of sand when they lived in TnT but as soon as they go North, they become kings and Queens! But visit them nah, and you will find that they hustling to make a living just like any where else! Good luck.

You know, many of us living here don't have buglar proofed windows at home, can leave windows and doors open, can leave stuff in yard, have houses tht not even fenced, wear jewellery etc
We also go to work and school and everywhere else.
None of my relatives here are looking to migrate. A few of the younger ones who do want to go want to go for financial gains.
I work in some of the most remote areas in south and I have never felt unsafe.

So scorpio, yuh saying there arent any sourpuss ketchass trinis frantically working 18 hours a day at 2 and 3 jobs to buss style when they save enough to come down for carnival?
I know enough of them to be able to say, if they had a choice, they'd want to be home. But they doh have the qualifications to comfortably live here..and America is the land of opportunities.
Is all about what u want at the end of the day. Presuming u were born and raised in trinidad, it didnt stop u for making something of yourself. In fact, it would seem it provided enough of a solid foundation for u to launch your own career.. and life. So doh turn around and knock it.
Not everyone who opts to stay here are lowly fools who cant do better for themselves. Some of us actually appreciate the lifestyle we have here. If i fall down in town ah know for sure nobody eh jus stepping over me. There would be 10 maccos and 6 persons genuinesly interested to see if I ok. I might end up dying waiting to see a doc in the hospital but thats a failure of the system, not the ppl. Here, ppl still care about ppl. U could still go to maracas and walk around and be offered a beer or some food by a total stranger. U can strike up a conversation on the bus with a random stranger and dont have to meditate days in advance if u should say hello.

Relevance. That's the key word. Snowbird's lifestyle seems to be rooted to Trinidad, so I don't blame her for loving where she is. I agree with Scorpio, I cannot live in Trinidad, not because I don't want to, but because I CAN'T. I came home 11pm Saturday night, on the train from Central London, walked home by myself. Where are you doing that in Trinidad? There are people who live in other countries who 'fly out' often to Trinidad and I always wondered, why not just move back? You know why, they can't either! As much as they would want to live back home, they are too accustomed to a certain lifestyle and a level of security.
So, to the person who wants to move to Trinidad, don't do so without having your own firsthand experience after many years abroad.

In OCALA PEOPLE talk to you like dey know for years. I lived in NEW YORK for 37 years, and never had awhite friend. Not because i am prejudice, but if you live in a black community, and most of the people you meet at the places you frequent are black, it's hardly likely you will have many white friends. However, in the less than a year i have been to OCALA, i have lots of white friends. They enjoy hanging out with us. They love our cooking. There is an ice-cream truck driven by a white lady that blasts steelband music. And let me debunk a myth: WHITE FOLKS IN THE NORTH ARE MORE PREJUDICE THAN THOSE IN THE SOUTH( AT LEAST IN OCALA)

Absolutely, as 'they say'....... "You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl "
Fortunately for me I live in a country that allows me to keep my Trini roots alive. Even though I haven't physically lived in T&T for over 40 years, I have been able to enjoy all of the 'positive' things about T&T right here in Canada, except for the beaches (but then there is always the option of that quick trip to my next love .... Cuba  ).
I have been able to not only keep, but share my Trini community, my culture, my food; yes, I am truly blessed to have the best of both worlds; so for me there really is no need to 'go back home' since "ah hav home rite here".

Hi guys. Just want to put my two cents in.
In 2005 my husband and I moved to Trinidad. We lived there a year and then had to come back 'home' due to my husbands health problems. Home for us is Saskatchewan, Canada. For those of you who don't know, in the winter when you all are at the beach at Maracas or Las Cuevas (which I absolutely loved by the way)(Saskatchewan is totally land locked and our beaches are small) we are trying to stay warm in minus 30 degree temps and 1 to 5 feet of snow.
We didn't live in a gated community, we lived in D'Abadie (oh did I mention we are white), had wonderful neighbours, frequented Miss Molly's bar, (Spanish bar on Eastern Main Road) and the two others down the block (and for the life of me I can't remember their names and I am sorry for that) and saw the Island as it is meant to be seen (in my humble opinion anyway) by maxi and by walking.
I think the nicest thing that anyone (and I mean anyone) has ever said to me was down in Trinidad. The week before we left a bunch of our new friends had a 'going away' party for us and one of the guys said to us "Well you have a nice holiday and come home real soon.
We had a wonderful time down there and would still be there if the health of my husband was better.
I would have to agree with some of the people on this forum about going down and 'living' there for a while before you make the leap. We went down twice before and then had to move down.
My husband was working and had a good job so we were very fortunate that way.
It's not paradise, but where is? It is what you make of it. Stay out of harms way as best as you can and just be careful.
It was a wonderful experience and we still love your Island and will be back as often as we can.
So thank you to all you Trinis that made our stay there such a memorable experience. :)

So thank you to all you Trinis that made our stay there such a memorable experience. :) I am very glad to know you enjoyed being in TRINIDAD. And i do hope your husband makes a full, and healthy recovery. However, let's forget the crime for the moment. WHAT ABOUT SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC. The fact that you had to return because of your husband's illness, shows the lack of good healtn-care in the country. I have a friendf who is here, as i write this, for treatment. Our health insurance does not cover us( not just me, but any US CITIZEN OR RESIDENT), If you fall ill, you will have to lie, and say you were on vacation. DO I WANT TO SUBJECT MYSELF TO THAT SHOULD I NEED MEDICAL ATTENTION. Let me give you a perfect example why i retire to OCALA, and not TRINIDAD, nor why i did not stay in NEW YORK. I am leaving NY on next wednesday. But my daughter will not be back from LONDON until next thursday. We are going crazy trying to figure out who to leave the keys to her vehicle with. In ocala, i would have left the vehicle in the driveway, and leave the key under the mat, or in an envelope in the glove compartment. Also in OCALA, you return merchandise, and your money will be refunded. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Before i left OCALA, last friday, i went to the post office and told them to hold my mails. WHEN i return i will go to the post office and collect all my mails neatly wrapped with a rubberband around them, or in an envelope. Also, while i am in NY, crime watch(once you inform them that you will be away)will checkout you premises. There are lots of other benefits to retiring to OCALA, as oppsed to TRINIDAD, or NEW YORK, BUT I AM PRESSED FOR TIME. I do not even have the time to reread my post, so please forgive any errors.

Danceboy keeps mentioning London like that is supposed to impress poor trini souls. I think those days done Dancerboy. Anyway, you keep talking about Ocala - please refresh my memory of where this "heaven on earth" is. Sorry if i missed that in an earlier post.

I am not trying to impress anyone. My daughter is an auditor, she is a CPA, and her job sends her away often. SHE WENT TO LONDON. IN FEBRUARY SHE WAS IN NICARAGUA in february. If they sent her to TRINIDAD, i will say she is in TRINIDAD. I do not have to impress anyone. Let me tell you something impressive. My 13 year old granddaughter who goes to a school for gifted children brought home her report card. HER LOWEST SCORE WAS 95, AND HER HIGHEST WAS 98. And by the whey, ah doh expect yuh to know OCALA. It's called horse country. yuh have to be of a certain "CALIBER" yo live there. That's different from the "CALIBER", used by the bandits in T&T. Ah know yuh familiar wid dat one.

Thanks for the info DANCERBOY. I'm happy to hear your kids are doing well! By the way a couple of months ago i moved with my family, back to Trinidad from Fairfax County in Northern VA after living and working there for several years. I'm sure you will know that Fairfax has been ranked as one of the top 5 counties in the US to live in since 1992 and Northern VA is ranked as one of the areas of most rapid economic growth in the US. So before you open your mouth again, there are others in the forum who know a thing or two about living (a good life) abroad. I just think you have a really distasteful attitude when you refer to life in Trinidad! You probably had it hard down here for you to be so bitter!
The world is a mansion. Some change rooms, others return to their old rooms, and still some more go on adventures looking at new rooms and deciding in what new room they would like to settle.
My neighbor is moving back to T&T this morning after ten years of prosperity in Ft Lauderdale, and he is very young, under forty. I know many Trinis who migrated to the US and then left for India after several years of prosperity. Every day people return to their country of birth or elsewhere for one reason or another.
So who is really in a position to speak for others about heaven on earth in this world mansion? I myself would like to move to India shortly after forty six plus years of tough prosperity in the US. What is it about the spirit of man that drives him in new and old directions?

I do not have a distaste for T&T. As a matter of fact i love it more than most TALKERS. Yuh ever love ah oman so much yuh would rather not be with her ? I GUESS IF YUH CRITIZE YOUR CHILDREN YUH HATE THEM. That's the attitude that has T&T WHERE IT IS TODAY. If yuh look back to the days when i posted regularly on the express under the name of RIBS, YUH WOULD SEE SOME OF MY POST. But no one, not the politicians, not the people listened, and MANNINIG like ERIC WILLIAMS DEAF. NOW that crime has overtaken the country everybody up in arms. How could anybody not see it coming. By the whey, ah guess yuh nut too smart. If it's all that in VIRGINIA, WHY DID YUH LEAVE ? ARE YUH AFRAID OF THE WOLF ? AND BY DE WHEY, I DID HAVE IT HARD. I AM VERY SERIOUS. IF YUH READF SOME OF MY POST ON THIS FORUM YUH WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT. OR TORK TO YOUR PARENTS, ARSK DEM WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE BACK IN 1967. But i am just as proud for that hard life back then as i am of the relaxing and retired life i am living now. i earned the right to be critical of T&T. SO SHUTUP YUH LITTLE WHIPPER-SNAPPER. AND LEARN FROM YOUR ELDERS. I AM NEVER ASHAMED OF MY PAST, IT IS BECAUSE OF IT THAT I CAN ENJOY THE PRESENT, AND LOOKFORWARD TO THE FUTURE. Ah have to go take meh likkle grandaughter to school. TO BE CONTINUED.

hi
i'm new and was wondering how hard it would be to move to trinidad?
get a job?
is trinidad a good place to live?
sorry for so many questions, any help would be appreciated, thank you :)
It's very easy to move to Trinidad. Just buy an airplane ticket, jump on a plane and go.
No need to get a job since nothing works according to "Funnel Analogy - Why nothing Works in T&T' thread.
Trinidad is a very good and very bad place to live. Take your pick.
Hope this info answers your questions.
Okayu Dancerboy, i goh let u off the hook now because it look like u working urself up into a frenzy and i doh think that good for a old fella to do!
