O.K. so being Spring, some of us in North America are now battling 'pollen' season and the 'allergies' that go along with it; for some reason, this year the pollen counts are extremely high.

Anyway, it an attempt to combat the 'stuffy nose, itchy eyes, aching head' my GP recommended among other things, a nasal spray called.... Nasonex ( the steroid mometasone) well, while this drug is 100% effective, one of major side effect of this drug is ..... it can cause 'Upper Respiratory tract infection' (bad cough).

So yep, now that I have gotten ride of my stuffy nose, I am battling what feels and sounds like a version of 'whooping' cough. Not only that, recognizing the symptoms, I called a family member who spent a few months battling a similar cough ailment only to find out that she too was on Nasonex just before she developed the condition.

Lesson here: do you research before you take any medication; sometimes the cure may be worse than the original ailment you were treating.

(excuse me while I go cough up a lung  )

I hope you feel better soon. Perhaps you can look for a more natural remedy. Lots of conventional medicine seem to have side effects. Sometimes we'll be shocked at the possible side effects when we read the packaging.

I generally don't take traditional medicine; however because this year the pollen counts have been so high, I found that my regular approach which is large quantities of vitamin C was not working quickly enough so I decided to go with an alternative.
Needless to say I'm back to my vitamins and kicking myself all the way.
Right now I'm 'flushing' my system with 'gallons' of cranbury and orange juice, and added concentrated vitamin C powder to the drinks; I can take up to 4,000 to 5,000 mg per day with no ill effects, so that's the route I'll go back to.

Who sen meh

Perhaps you can eat more fruits and veggies as well. The antioxidants will help boost your immune system. Milk and milk based products like cheese can aggravate it by producing more phlegm. My dad suffers from sinus problems and he stopped using milk and cheese.

It is the biggest fiction ever, that natural medicines dont have side effects.

Also, if you agree to use any steriodal anti inflammatory then you should be made aware of the risks.

No one is saying that Falcon, it is just that recently it seems that every 'modern' medicine comes with a huge list of side effects; that scares me. So much so that when 'cures' are advertised on TV (and yes, we have one for just about everything), you will get a few seconds of actual product promotion, then the remainder of the ad. is about all of the side effects; I guess the drug company calls this 'due diligents' which means they are off the hook in the case of liability.

When prescriptions are filled over here, the pharmacist (not the Doctor) seems to be more concerned with the negative interaction with other drugs you are on than all of the side effects you have to deal with; it's almost like a 'buyer beware' mentality, for this reason, many have resorted to consulting the internet or doing other types of research one their own.

If only strawberries could grow here and we could get them cheap. :(

LOL, well I guess a little ice-cream once in a while will not really do anything. Come to think of it, my father does the same.

Who knows, maybe once allyuh get allyuh Mega Farm up and running they may have some growing in some 'greenhouse' under controled temperatures
But seriously, our out door growing season for strawberries is so short (last weeks of Spring, first weeks of Summer) that they are now grown at other times of the year in controlled environments; maybe Patos cud hook allyuh up wid something

I do not think my nose was designed to operate in Ontario. :-) I am going to try that no dairy products thing but I think it's those damn crab apple & cherry trees. They look so nice though. Snowbird: I hope you feel better soon.

Same here for me, yuh know that song..... Summer time and the living is easy?

Well I have one ....... Spring time and the breathing eh easy

There is so much pollen in our lovely green province come Springtime that those of us with 'sensivities' suffer. Just to give you an example, I react to Maple pollen; according to the pollen counts 10 is a high reading and will affect those with sensivities; one day I checked the reading for our city, it was 200  Yuh could guess what kina day I had

Anyway my conjection is still there, I'm still offending people with my 'dog cough'. That medicine really did compromise my respatory system, it's been a week and a half, and still no let up.

Snowbird: I've started using the Neti Pot. They sell in Shoppers Drug Mart for about $20. It takes some getting use to it(which is the fear of drowning in yuh bathroom). It helps some. I started a thread on this some time back.

Thanks very much for the link to your other thread, lots of good suggestions there, and yes, I am a 'ginger' person; I keep ginger root in my fridge all the time and drink the tea regularly. I noticed some people were having a problem getting Non-iodized sea salt; I have been buying it for years in the regular supermarkets.

As to Neti Pot? hummmmm, sounds interesting, but ah not sure ah cud do that, right now I am fine with nose spray, but nose drops freaks me out. Will have to think about that
