Hey people check this out.
The student counselling and psychological service (CAPS) offers a range of services including crisis intervention, diagnostic assessment, therapy for individuals, couples and families. The number and frequency of sessions are determined individually, largely based on what the student finds most helpful. In addition, CAPS can make referrals for psychiatric assessment at the Eric Williams Medical Complex when appropriate, and assist students with medication management.
Here's their site http://sta.uwi.edu/caps/
thats a very good thing...but they always had such things availabe, but the average student didnt have a clue abt it..glad to see they puttin it out there more now...

Library Fines
Students are reminded to return overdue library items and to clear any outstanding library fines by the end of Semester I, 2007-2008. Failure to return over due items or to settle unpaid fines by this date, will result in the placement of a Library Fine hold in the Student Banner System.
Students can check the current status of their library account using the “Sign-In” option on the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) at http://stalibweb01.sauwi.uwi.tt/F.

People think moving to the U.S. is always a super deal, but for a teenager to leave all their friends and go somewhere where they don't know ANYBODY...iz tough! My bro went to UWI and 10 yrs later he still close friends with the "UWI regulars". SIGH!!!

Yup I quite agree with your comment here....you do in some cases make lifelong friends...the same applies here.

Here's another view:
A lot of the students in 1st year at UWI start with the clique of friends from their Secondary school so its not easy being accepted into their lil group. If there is group work and the Lecturer allows you to form your own groups they quickly choose these friends. To combat tht problem most lecturers assign groups by surnames.
In my case being older than most of them I can't stand some of them and their childish behaviour. I am not into who's wearing wht, or wht I am wearing etc.
Because I work and go to classes I don't have much time to mix with any1 and lime and get to know any1. Working in groups you may find a friend here or there.
So becos I go UWI doesn't mean tht I have been making lifelong friends. I have a few people tht I can call up etc but don't consider them friends.

Well I guess it's not necessarily the lifelong friends that I mainly miss. I guess it's the whole trini lifestyle that came to an abrupt and screeching halt as soon as I set foot on the plane to come here. My case is unique I guess since I didn't know ANYBODY here and it took a looooong while (years) before I met some other trinis, not always friendly and accommodating but trini nonetheless. All my high school friends from A'Levels went to UWI and had a blast. I was in culture shock locked up in my apartment afraid to go out at night with all the stuff on the news (this was back around 1990 when Trinidad was comparatively very safe and I was used to going out at night and not fearing any crime...I know it's different now). I guess I just didn't expect to miss the trini lifestyle and my family as much as I did/do now. I'm kinda stuck here now and some things make me really sad, like my nephew just turning 18 yrs old in October and I basically missed out on his whole childhood because I am stuck here in the U.S. Long story, but I've only been back to TT three times over the past 18 yrs and two of those times were in the past 3 yrs! I'll quit moping now. You never really know what you have till it's not there anymore. SIGH again!

Sorry to hear abt how you spent your University years bradygirl. But why did you move away and stayed away so long? Ok maybe I've asked to much.
You know when I walk thru Campus I see the guys on Social Sci side playing cards etc and on the other side of Campus where I usually am at Nat Sci you don't see the card playing etc. Maybe every1 goes there to play cards.
Then there are the couples making out at the Chemistry block tht people call the sex block. And couples making out on the couches at Rituals too. Its like geez get a room.
I used to think UWI campus was so big when I first started. Now I can walk from JFK to Admin as if tht was no big deal.
kemist
11-25-2007, 12:13 AM
yeah solachica the card playing around nat sci has stopped for quite a while now.
when i was an undergrad a lot of us used to play right by the vice principal office.
And some of them who make out in the 'sex block' does feel that is a designated make-out area (lol), and they does look vex when others go there to lime as though yuh interrupting them or something.
when it came to study groups, the first one i was part of, i was the only male. I studied with them for a week and then joined another group. No offence, but most women ole talk too much :D
i remember walking from uwi to grand central to play pool (it only had like 2 pool tables on campus in the old infinity bar)
now i too lazy to walk from nat sci to jfk, i does drive it
I've made a lot of friends at uwi, a few whom i consider as lifetime friends. Some who hooked up at uwi when we were all undergrads are now married and have babies. I am probably one of the only ones who still single. And many predicted i would be one of the first in our bunch to get married....well i've showed them huh  :D
and yess, in the 1st year, people who did A-levels together usually form their own lil groups. In my days, playing all 4's must have united us all :) , because by the second semester in that first year, everybody got to know everybody very well. For each course we used to have a party after the 12 weeks of labs are finished. There were also things like staff vs student cricket matches which brought e1 together.

Kemist party after end of labs? Tht sound good. We don't have tht cooperation to pull tht off. Maybe every1 else to involved in their own lives and as soon as labs are over they rush off to where ever. After a 4-5hr lab nobody sticking around. And I certainly don't becos by tht time its 6pm and I only thinking abt the drive down South.
A friend of mine in 1yr year, also a bit older than the 18yr olds, said he noticed tht these young people pair off in the first few weeks of the semester and then after abt a month and a half they break up and hook up with some one else and so the trend goes. I ask if he jealous.
It's a whole new experience of living on their own for some of these youngsters.
Aye I park by Chemistry block Friday becos my right foot was swollen and I didn't want to walk far. The 2 vehicles next to me were clamped. I feel I was lucky becos maybe they just had 2 clamps and I get away.
Kemist I does park in the carpark and walk a bit. But just from Nat Sci to FSA to Dudley. Just tht general area.
I don't have the time to lime around campus and besides the other people who I get along with either working to or does prefer to sleep. so I've never really just limed on Campus or in the Food Court or SAC etc. I think am missing out a bit on tht part.

solachica,
Sorry if i gave you the wrong impression but we didnt party after the end of each individual lab session (i wish we did tho lol).I meant on the 12th week , after the last lab session for the semester, we got together for each different course. That tradition still continues today in chemistry, in some cases where the class is not all that together the lecturers or demonstrators would take the initiative to plan it.
Yeah yuh have to be very careful about parking in the chemistry block. This year the security has done a lot of clamping there because staff has been complaining that they short of parking space, or some1 parked behind them and they cant get out etc. There is usually a guard there during the day, so if you know you not going to take long, find the guard and tell them you will only be a few minutes and show them your car. They are sometimes accomodating, and you also have the advantage of being able to play the helpless damsel in distress card :D
I too dont have the time to lime around campus. Students often tell me to come down sac and lime with them but I dont like going there anymore because it makes me feel old

Things were sure different at Univ of Houston. There were so many students that we never had the same people in our class from one semester to the next. Many classes had over 200 students in a big auditorium. People just minded their own business and nobody seemed to want to talk...not just to me but to each other. They just hustle in and out of class every day. Trini people in Houston were not very friendly either. Once I got to know about some events I went, but not knowing anyone I still felt lonely...even surrounded by all those trinis. It seems this cliquish behaviour continues into adulthood for many people. I think things are just different than we were kids. People are less friendly overall now...across the board. Even my high school friends (who I took the time to locate after 15 yrs or so) find it hard to respond to my emails etc always claiming to be "busy". It's just too much work for them to keep a friendship with someone in the U.S. when all their other trini friends are right there in TT. I have tons of stuff going on also with the house, husband and kids, running my own business etc, but I still take the time to try to keep in touch. Oh well, at least I try.

I feel the same way.
No one in High school kept in touch with me and when the 10 yr reunion came around then I got a call and they had found me Online in graduates.com. I tried keeping in touch in the past and after some years I gave up. Even in Trinidad tht happens.
My classes are huge also. We have at least 175+ people in each class. Especially if it's a core class it cud reach like 240. But after the crowded classes at first by the 2nd week people stop coming to the Lectures and there is alot of room. They have their friends who come to class and get notes for them. Many young people complain abt waking up to go to an 8am class.

In my first year i lived at home in chaguanas and always reached on time for my 8 am classes. When i started renting right opposite uwi, i always reached late for those classes. because i thought if i woke up 7:00 i could reach on time and also i always had to stop and play some all 4's on the way to class. :D
I made every effort to attend classes especially the tutuorials, but i knew if i missed any, i could always get the notes from one of my friends. There was one girl in particular whom i sought notes from - she took very detailed notes, if the lecturer sneezed, she would write that down too :D

maybe yuh know Dr Starr, from zoology i think. I heard he parked in a spot reserved for a head of dept and got clamped. He lives right up de road from uwi, so he could walk from home to uwi. I'm a PG who works there just so that i dont have to pay fees (fringe benefit) and get a parking sticker :) . I hoping to finish early next year and get a real job. I just hope it was worth it- staying on as a struggling student because i wanted more than just a degree. I see my friends who i graduated with and they are all settled in life already. I only hope that getting a few letters after my name is gonna be worth the sacrifice. :|

I stayed on watts Tr almost 1.5yrs but then gave tht apt up becos I hardly stayed there in the last few mths and $1200 was a bit to much to be wasting on tht rent.

Almost all PG's in chemistry are on staff so they get parking stickers. Since PG's are flexible to work at any time, day or night, we do have access to our own 'locked' facilities.
So we basically get the better of both worlds -we are still students, but also get a few staff benefits. (staffdents :P )

Part time demons salaries ranges from $65 to $78 an hour, but they can work no more than 60 hours per semester. Full time demons now get $3k a month for 90 hrs per semester. (For the past 3 years it was $2700). Only full time demons get their tuition fees waived. So after rent we only left with enough just to survive on. Scholarship people have it nice tho, they can also demonstrate part time. When i was on schol. the stipend was $3300 a month. Coupled with part time demostrating, a total of about $4800 monthly. From next year i hear the stipend going to double.
Demonstrating contacts are only 1 year, even tho they are renewed as long as you are a PG, we still cannot buy items on hire purchase, take loans etc. And admin does take they godfather time to renew contracts every new academic year. Some of we doh get pay until end of october. :( So come next september, if yuh see any of yuh demonstrators in ah sour mood, yuh know why.

the new semester classes starts Jan 14th.
I suggest you go the week before (or this week) because you will have a lot of 'running around' to do on campus.
Go to admin first, explain your situation, find out about fees, get all necessary registration forms and payment slips etc. They can direct you on the procedure. Also check your dept about courses.
You should consider taking advantage of this week since there aren't many students around. If you get in by 9am it is possible to sort it out by midday.
If you put it off till the last minute, you will encounter the long lines and may have to spend an entire day behind this.
^^thank you!
thats what i thought too...im planning on going in tomorrow (Jan 2nd) and hopefully getting it all done ASAP

Hello UWI people, I feel as if I havent paid tax but coming for services. Dim says it's the Trini way and that you all wont mind. I think in my time at UWI I paid enough!
Someone is going to TT to study at Mt Hope.
They would like to know the cost of accommodation on and off campus? Can I get some approximate quotes? Please?
.....tenks.......

Somebody007
01-24-2008, 10:15 AM
I think accommodation has risen steadily over the years. You might end up paying something like $1000 TT dollars a month (maybe more or maybe a little less) for a bedroom in shared accommodation. You get all the other facilities though....electricity, running water....phone bills are not inclusive. Some places offer cable television and internet connection which is also covered in total rent costs.
I don't know what are the actual costs for Campus accommodation but I'm sure there is info or contact emails on the UWI website to find out actual costs of living on Campus.
In terms of tuition, all fees for international students are quoted in $US dollars. Up to the time I went to UWI in 1998, it was like $7000 US dollars a year for an international student (not med.sci...this cost might be more). Of course, now it will be higher than that.
I also believe once the person has citizenship for Trinidad and Tobago, then they should be getting in free with some small administrative costs involved in enrolment.
Falcon, this is the best I can help you for now, until I get some more info for you. Let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with.

Thanks a lot for this.
Are you implying that 'getting in free' has some relation with Govt covering the cost of accommodation as well? Or am I not reading you correctly?
The 1000 quote is what I wanted, and I can search the website for on-campus options......thanks again!

Nah, its tuition only that is free....accommodation is what you will have to pay fully out of your own pocket.
Oh Falcon, I forget to add....and ah knew this one applied to the Caribbean....ah doh know about foreign countries....but usually when you now get into UWI for the first time, I think UWI admin does tell you to buy an economy class ticket and then they fully re-imburse you of your plane ticket when you arrive in Trinidad. I know that rule existed when I was there, don't know about now.
Tell your friend to buy an economy class ticket only and keep it when he arrives in Trinidad and take with him to the Main admin building and ask them if the refund applies to students coming from outside the Caribbean into UWI to study.

Sorry falcon but i only just saw your posts.
Somebody007 covered everything.
Be prepared for $1000 being the min rent fee..
Usually off-campus rooms were cheaper than campus halls, but nowadays there is not much difference. For campus rooms, rent has to be paid in full at the beginning of the semester
Campus halls usually have shared facilities, but its better for convenience and security (and liming :D ). I'm not sure about the availability of single rooms- i think they give foreigners and senior students preference for those.

I now see this too....havent been coming here much since the Forum change becos I cant post from my Blackberry and am not in front a pc often
Anyway....I havent been renting for more than a year now but I know tht rent has again gone up as it usually does. I used to pay $1000/mth then $1200/mth for a single room in a 3 storey apartment like building. It was a nice place I must admit and when I was moving out they had just installed washers and dryers.
There are still places tht you wud pay $750 etc but tht is shared and rooms arent tht great. Am guessing tht the person wud want to stay closer to Mt Hope. Am not sure abt accomadation and rent $$ on tht side but the Joyce Gibson-Inniss Hall in Mt Hope accomodates 204 med students.
Living on Hall is not for everyone. Some enjoy it, some dont.

A 'field trip' :) to the uwi field station is always good to get fresh meat, milk etc. There was a time when you could say i had a fetish for milk and cereal, for breakfast and dinner, but with only fresh cow milk which i used to get from that farm. But i stopped because i put on like 12 pounds in a month from drinking that milk everyday. At least it probably made my bones and teeth stronger :D

sola - the male toilet in chem doesnt have all that. we only just got automatic- flushing toilets and water taps with sensors, and a paper towel dispensor
aurea - since 2004 recruitment of students in nat sci has been record high and increasing each year. Very soon having, a degree will be as common as O'Levels. To add to that, there is also a marked increase of postgrad enrollment, so within the next few years having a masters would also be common. It would give an advantage over some1 who has a degree for jobs that require a degree, but those which requires a masters (and there aren't much in T'dad for a nat sci grad) is going to be very competitive. The only way to stay above the game is to do a PhD, but that takes a lot of commitment and there isnt a big demand for nat sci PhD's in t'dad, but at least it will make you marketable any where in the world. The 2-3 extra years longer that a PhD would take compared to a masters may very well be worth the effort in the long term.
Just something to think about.

I left UWI nearly ten years ago but wanted to weigh in. Doing a nat sci Masters makes a lot of sense nowadays. In fact doing a Masters in any field makes a lot of sense. The main reason i see for doing a masters is to advance your career path and make yourself more marketable. Therefore select the focus of your masters very very carefully for the righ reasons and NOT just because you are in love with the subject area.
The tables turn at the PhD level it think. First, doing a PhD to remain in TnT makes little sense, but if you plan on taking your education international then it makes more sense. Therefore making the great and often underestimated comittment of doing a PhD in nat sci at UWI means also making a comittment to leave TnT to pursue your career. Second the reason for doing a PhD should NEVER EVER be to advance your career. I cannot stress that enough. The reason for doing a PhD is because you are comitted to the field, you have something you feel you want to contribute and you want this to be your life and legacy. Thinking of a PhD as some kind of extension of a masters is wrong and a terrible mistake. Third, if you havr two degrees from UWI already, doing an additional nat sci PhD at UWI adds less value. You are much better off getting a PhD from a foreign university. If you want to play at the PhD level in the international arena, you must have been recognized by more than one university system and especially another other than in a third world country ( i am by no means demeaning UWI - I have a UWI degree also).
I will lastly add that in considering the PhD route, the best advice you can get is from those who have already earned a PhD. People with masters do not understand. people who started and failed a PhD do not understand and definitely people who claim they wanted to do a PhD ( and there are many) will never understand.
On of my retired UWI nat sci professors once told me "the world is your crucible" and this is true although you may not know it from the TnT scenario. On the world scene, there is an amazing amount of opportunity for a person with an advanced nat sci degree. Tons of jobs and career paths and activities. You just have to be smart about it and chart a pathway for yourself.

Dr Badrie real mess up my friend during our final year presentation dred. My partner and I did our final year project in Chemistry in conjunction with d Food Science dept, she was our supervisor, and on d day of our presentation, she ask my friend this real hard question and even questioned the integrity of our results! I had to answer for my friend and make up an answer right on d spot.
well i would say this,
the oral presentation is part of the exam for the course and as an exam, its not supposed to be a walk in the park. Its true that some may get questioned harder than others, but the questioning is not meant to embarass anyone.

I went to Student Advisory ytday. They have a snazzy new building. I didn't even know they had their own big place. I had to call someone to find out where they moved. Parking is lacking though. Inside it have number system like at the bank. But the staff there is always friendly and helpful. Well at least to me.
I like the material they used on the stairs to go upstairs. Looks shiny and sleek.
I saw they have a row of computers on the right side wall. Wonder if thts for anyone to use.

yeah i find that consultation thing kinda strange. In my dept student advisory is from the
15th -26th, and i have to do like 6 hrs per week. so if a student register already, and i find out they reg for the wrong courses, they will have to do add/drop. That doesnt really makes much sense to me, advisory should have been since b4 reg in august.

uwi taking in more students than they can handle. standards for recruitment has dropped dramatically, and you can see it in the 1st year students. as a tutor, its frustrating because we have to go back an teach them what they should have already done at A levels.

lol i dont bother asking anymore. i just start off with the basics bec if they dont understand that, they'd be lost for the rest of the course. That takes up an extra lecture which i plan to make up for on the 13th week. IN chem we didnt used to have lectures on the 13th week, just maybe 1 tutorial class. But i seriously believe it should be mandatory for anyone who doesnt get an A or a 1 in cape, to do the prelim courses. I know that in some subject areas the cape syllabus is being revised and the principal, dean etc are planning a retreat to discuss some of these issues, but i dont see any changes taking effect within the next couple years.

kemist help meh out here nuh.
wht is this declaration thing abt?
hmmm i dont know.
but from reading that, it appears as though say, if you graduating at the end of next semester, then when you register for next semester courses, that will be the last chance you have to change your major/minors. i guess changing those would be rare, since most students would only do courses that contributes to their major/minor. i would assume that your very last chance to make changes would be during the add/drop period just after registration.
i dont know if there is a separate declaration form to fill out.
the best thing to do is to call either admin and ask the faculty rep., or the dean's office or the assistant registra's office.
Solachica
05-29-2009, 03:21 PM
So next question, as long as I make my 100+ credits tht I need to graduate wht I have to do?
Or they does automatically have me in pass list?
Wht I wud need to do to graduate. I was thinking when I declared my major/minor some1 wud be checking my transcript or something to make sure I satisfy requirements to graduate :?
kemist
06-01-2009, 01:59 PM
if i'm correct, the graduation list is automatically generated. i can't recall exactly when they would send you your graduation package.
check your transcript on banner to make sure you have enough credits and for any mistakes.
as a personal policy, i dont leave anything to be handled automatically by the system - a mistake can cost you an extra semester.
so after checking transcripts, visit the person in admin who is in charge of your faculty, to ensure that you will be graduating.
are you pre-GPA?

we had no such things as minors, just majors and our transcript and the grad list was generated automatically - i dont recall having to declare an ting.
the reason why i asked about gpa, i heard about students staying back an extra semester or even a year to improve their gpa and was wondering if thats true, if the system allows that.

a few students had asked me about staying an extra semester to improve their gpa but i had no answers for them. they wanted to get into mt hope after they did their 1st degree in nat sci
with all the competition to get into mt hope, people seeking degrees now just to get in oui.
i still have nightmares about the very first lab i did in yr 1.
Solachica
06-03-2009, 06:59 AM
:o degree and then mthope? some people really like sch oui
med sch is like 7yrs? and then tht 3 with first degree?
kemist
06-04-2009, 01:30 AM
yeah, a lot of 1st yr students only come into nat sci to get into mt hope or eng.
the small % who get better than a B+ average would usually get in the fol yr (or at least on the waiting list), but the rest who pass continues in nat sci.
a first degree will definitely get them in the fol year- every year there's always a couple of students who chooses this.
(and the thing is, students from a foreign non-contributing country, would easily get into mt hope with mediocre grades at A/cape level !)
in my year, 3 of my classmates who grad with me, chose to go on to mt hope, and in those days, we had to take loans...dollar 4 dollar & gate wasnt available yet. so i could imagine how much debt them 3 of them have. i just glad i not married to any of dem

Yeah, they do that. They drop courses their final year so they have to stay on an extra year to meet credit requirements and then pick up "easy" courses to get A's and bring up their GPA.

So I get meh gown and hood...i have no idea how to fix that hood na :? it look like rel janjat yes.
Today when I went for gown this girl was complaining that her blue hood not matching her blue gown....she was like everything has to be perfect  and the poor fella had to be runnin up and down with hoods trying to find one to match her gown
So for Soc Sci grad there would be seating outside.......with a big screen for the outsiders
