I also read, FLORIDA'S LAW, LEGAL GUIDE FOR AMERICANS OVER FIFTY, THE MEASURE OF A MAN(autoB of SYDNEY POITER, MEN CRY IN THE DARK,THE BETTER BRAIN BOOK, THE AUTOMATIC MILLIONAIRE, CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMIC HIT MAN by JOHN PERKINS. And now to answer your question; i am reading, MY GRANDFATHER'S SON, by CLARENCE THOMAS.( the second black supreme court judge, the first being the late THURGOOD MARSHAL). As a side issue, it is being reported that the adult illiteracy rate in T&T is increasing. It's quite understandably. Who the hell can afford to buy books in T&T. EVERTON WEEKES new book (mastering the craft), is $140.00 for soft cover, and $240.00 for the hard cover. Some books i borrow from the library, but certain books i like to have in my library at home. Finished re-read the Omen, James Herbert's Lair and now reading one of my favorite characters...Inspector Frost by RD Wingfield. Great books! RIP Mr. Wingfield.
After reading Phillip Pullman's trilogy of books starting with the Golden Compass I have confirmed my suspicions about Mr Pullman. He is an atheist. An atheist that writes kids books and that's so scary I cannot begin to put into words the damage a man like this can do to an unformed mind. Say what...if we can't trust our kids to know for themselves what's right and wrong in life then we won't ever win.
The Books were well written in my opinion and the story lines were brilliant. I just don't agree with his outlook. Reading is so empowering.

Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance.
I have only reached page 73 (its a 613 page book) and already I have laughed out loud TWICE and felt teary as well. I come across so few books with that power these days. The book is wonderfully written....so far.
I real Miguel Street for the first time last week. Really, really enjoyed it, and I'm glad my first experience with it was as an adult.
The humor, the unique characters and Naipaul's short, punchy sentences were my favorite aspects of the book. My favorite story was Wordsworth, hands down, even though it was one of the least funny. Really touching, and I think it really stood from the rest in terms of tone. It seemed to be the only story where Naipaul let himself be something other than bitter or cynical.
I also thought there was a significant change in the mood of the book in the last third or so. It probably had a lot to do with the narrator growing up. The domestic violence turned from amusing mention to grim spectacle to sad reality.
Good book.

I'm in the midst of re-reading what has been a favorite of mine ever since I read it as part of my CXC curriculum: John Wyndham's "The Chrysalids".
It depicts quite well behaviors that are prevalent in our society, and old though the book is, it does not feel old. From the outset you can see the conflict between the religious teachings and the experiences and feelings of the protagonist. It shows so well how humanity, particularly in dark times, will jump the religious bandwagon and feel that their way is the one true way regardless of the cost to those around them.
Funny enough, one of the best parts of the novel for me is the highly criticized ending. Some have called it hypocritical. We are however seeing the story through the protagonist's eyes, and those on the protagonist's side are no gods. It provides a valuable insight into human nature: David has not run away to utopia; he has run away to an equally flawed society to the one he has left behind. It just so happens that just their point of view is one that aligns with his own comfort zone.
Looking back, it is pleasantly surprising that so controversial a novel became a part of our core curriculum. For all its controversy it does encourage critical thinking and self reflection, and it does it in a concise, easy to read and entrancing manner. Someone somewhere in our messy education system did a good thing.

The author never revealed it. However, the mutations, glassy black landscape of the badlands and the opinion of the Sealander woman of the Old People being the power of God in the hands of children all seem to hint at nuclear war. Also remember the book was written in the 50's...1955 I think. The atomic bombings of WW2 would have still been fresh at the time of writing, and many would have been speculating what may occur in all out nuclear warfare.
I just finished teaching that book to my students, Sirius. It was actually my first time reading it, and I enjoyed it.
I never directly speak about my own beliefs (or lack thereof) to my students, but I believe in challenging them to really think about the beliefs that were drilled into them before they could even think properly. I'm probably like Mr Pullman in that regard. The Chrysalids was an excellent novel for that purpose, and I could see the sparks of critical thought going off in the minds of a few students.
