UNC Alliance gives COP new deadline for unity
The UNC Alliance is desperately trying to achieve some kind of accommodation and unity with the Congress of the People (COP) because it does not have enough candidates, senior members of the COP said yesterday.
"The UNC Alliance don't have candidates, that is why they keep trying," one COP member said.
UNC Alliance dual leaders Basdeo Panday and Jack Warner are saying however that over the next 48 hours "anything is possible" and if no one wants to join them, they will have no choice but to present the rest of their slate on go forth into the November 5 general elections.
Warner held a fruitless meeting with COP chairman Roy Augustus as well as Captain Gary Griffith on Monday where the COP reiterated that it did not want anything to do with the UNC Alliance, especially with former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj returning to the fold.
The Express was told that former principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Dr Bhoe Tewarie, was trying to broker a deal between the two parties yesterday but when contacted,Tewarie, the father of COP candidate Nirad Tewarie, denied this.
COP's position is being made even more clear in large newspaper advertisements which state that the "deception, viciousness and hypocrisy of the UNC leaders killed unity" at their rally on Sunday as they continued to verbally attack COP political leader Winston Dookeran and embrace Maharaj as a key member of their team.
Panday, when asked to respond to this, said yesterday "they (COP) cannot determine who the members of the Alliance should be".
He said the UNC Alliance cannot dictate to the COP or the PNM who their members should be.
When pressed as to why the UNC Alliance is still holding out to join forces with the COP, Panday said, "we have been trying for unity for a very long time".
"We want unity, they want to determine who our members should and should not be..the door is closing fast," said Panday.
Asked to comment on the COP's firm public stance that it will not join ranks with the UNC Alliance, Warner responded, "This is like a Guyanese thing, you could never tell."
He maintained that there is still time left and if by Friday nothing happens, the UNC Alliance is prepared to go to the polls alone.

At least Jack open to it and realizes what is needed. I didn't see him rule out the possibility of RLM and Bas sitting this one out. If Panday goes and they decide on a leader who will take the alliance forward and become PM I would consider voting for them.

God, are the COP that stupid? It's obvious that the UNC is just holding out their next slate of candidates and did not call any marginals cause they want someone OTHER than the PNM to win them.
If they do not unite, the best thing UNC can do is just not put anyone in marginal seats, then make negotiations after COP wins them and not PNM.
Here's why I dont trust any "accomodation" with the UNCA.
Leh we say they divide the seats 21 UNC -20 COP
I wouldnt put it past them on nomination day put up candidates for seats that are supposed to be contested by the COP, to ensure that the COP wins no seats. why they get a straight 2 way fight in thier own 21 seats.
why ? becuase the UNC DID THIS ALREADY !!!. Local Govt election 1996. They give the NAr 30+ seats to contest. All PNM seats but as the campiagn progess it turnout that the NAR was ahead in 3 Arima seats. So what the UNC do? They put up 3 "independent" candidates and split the vote to ensure that the NAR wouldnt take anything.
that's part of the reason why the UNC-NAR coalition unravel.

I never hear about that one before. Why would they not allow the NAR to win 3 seats when they were in a position to win so many other seats in their heartland? Doesn't make sense to me.

It doesnt make sense. but it happened. The UNC did not want the NAR to get a toehold back in Trinidad.

No it wasn't the PNM neither was it the UNC. I lived in Arima, I was a PNM activist and know of that. They were in fact Independents.

I hope they are seriously talking about what it would take to come to some sort of accommodation during that time. Whatever happens they should specify who will be going for the PM spot before we go to the polls. I do not trust Panday in this type of situation based on history, any talks will have to be without him.

If they are that stupid, why call on them to unite? You should always leave stoopid people alone. And they didn't put up any candidates in the Marginals? What do you call St.Joseph - with Carson Charles and Tunapuna - with Christine Newallo? Plus the UNC team was at the EBC Office in Barataria/San Juan checking their nomination papers.

Someone better wake him up from his stupor and reveal to him that even if the UNCA doesn't win the next election, the sun will still rise in the morning, and set in the evening :lol:

If I was Dookeran I would take out Page 2 ads in all the newspaper and state categorically why the COP is rejecting the UNC offer of an accomodation .
If it means putting Panday to the sword , then so be it .

I ent say he should lock she home but if she taking money to send the children to school without letting him know and always in d video like P.Diddy then you have to draw the line somewhere. Kamla at least earn a seat and ran a ministry and perform some kinda useful function.
