200 billion done and roads can't get fix
Rio Claro protests bad road
Tuesday, October 9 2007
From as early as 6 am yesterday, more than 100 Rio Claro residents staged a placard demonstration on the Brasso Tabaquite Road to highlight the poor road conditions and the lack of telephone service in their community.
Rio Claro (North) councillor, Hazarie Ramdeen, told Newsday that WASA contractors are laying pipe lines in the area but they are not covering the road with quality material.
Ramdeen added that the same contractors damaged the TSTT telephone lines some six months ago.
“When we contacted TSTT, they said they did not have any transportation to send into the area to fix the lines. Imagine that, ” said Ramdeen.
Other residents complained that when it rains, the area is covered in muddy water and on hot days, the atmosphere is dusty. “A lot of people are suffering from asthma and other dust related illnesses due to the poor road condition. Even taxi-drivers are refusing to ply their trade in the area,” a frustrated student said.
Some placards read: “Dust is a hazard, we have fish holes in the road,” “Mr Minister, Dust in we face, No taxi, no phone, no vote.”
During the protest which lasted about five hours, traffic continued slowly as motorists avoided potholes while watching the protestors. Ramdeen, who is also the vice-chairman of the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation, is calling on the ministers of Works and Transport and Public Utilities to fix the problems.
