What is in place to monitor and maintain these cameras anyway ?

Let me guess : some contractor with good political connections got paid big money to put up tehse cameras, but no one thought it through beyond the actual setting up.

When i read in the newspapers that they were planning to introduce the cctv system, i thought finally some1 in authority is thinking for once. Surprised to see this tread title, I didnt expect it to be introduced so soon, since it requires a lot of preparation.
Apparently they lack micro-managers to check on the little important things - like if the equipment working, how to set it up etc.
With that level of competence i wouldnt be surprised if they just forgot to plug it on. :D I hope they got warranty on it.

jokes aside, i would like to know what the problem is and whats going to be done about it.
IF it is being overseen by a contractor, the govt should not tolerate sub-standard services and merchandise and should penalize them financially. Oops i forgot, this is T'dad - land of corruption!

Most likely it is a contractor that is responsible. I would like to know who is the contractor responsible and what is the reason the system is not functioning. I'd also like to know if these cameras are just the few cameras installed around downtown probably a year ago, or if it has been expanded to cover known crime hotspots.

What is it with T&T, they always seem to jump in 'head first'.

I remember my aunt telling me about some ships they bought years ago; to her it was a joke that they sat in the dock for years because of mechanical problems.

Then there are the blimps that seem to spend more time on the ground than in the air.

The radar problem so that your coasts are completely vulnerable.

Just a few days ago, I read about some Government computers that were inoperable, again, waiting to be worked on.

Now these cameras

What? Is it that T&T keeps buying 'cat in bag'?
Seeing that these are all things that the 'average Joe' can't muck around with, doesn't it make sense to ensure that you have 'technical support' before you even consider going into these ventures.

Oh, and by the way, what ever happened to good Old Fashioned Policing?

Doesn't it seem like lately there is a trend of wasting taxpayers' money on things that don't work like Blimps, cameras, Radars ?

The strange thing is, I recently read on another thread that the Government were proposing to rent computers (I think it was), and there was so much outrage expressed. Now let's just take a look at rental, or leasing vs. buying this equipment outright.

Had these cameras, the blimp, or any of the other non-functioning equipment been on rental, wouldn't it have been easier to simply stop paying the fee, or clawing back on rental or leases already paid for from the purveyors of this equipment?
Tell me if these people, being hit on their bottom line, wouldn't have gotten the equipment repaired 'pronto'.

Oh, and just so you know, in Canada, there has long since been a trend for businesses to lease vehicles, furniture and other technical equipment rather than buy, for three reasons....

1. They get a tax break as an ongoing business expense
2. They do not have the added worry of building the infrastructure to service and maintain this equipment.
3. At some point in time, they are not stuck with obsolete equipment.

Contrary to popular thinking, in most cases there is no 'appreciated value' to technical or other equipment, but the tendency is always.... as long as you own it, then hold on to it.
