Now how did I miss this?
The duck pics are great but I am taken in by the windmill. JD comes to mind when I see it :)
I think that windmill is a part of the nuclear power plant.

Google tells me that it's the Pickering Wind Generation Station, which is adjacent to the Pickering Nuclear facility. The wind facility looks more impressive than the nuclear station :)
I am beginning to like 5180 the most.

that is in canada. bay ridges, ontario to be more specific. our first house was within walking distance of frenchmans bay. i used to go swimming and fishing over there. i remember diving off the old wooden bridge. of course the water was a lot cleaner then. i wish the damn government would have open season on them damn geese. most waterfront parks are overrun with these things.

but they only harass you for a few months of the year no? Or did the tree huggers feed them and convince them to stay all year? Them place too cold for me, Look how the weather hit zero here and I get so damn sick......stewwps.

the tree huggers caused a change in the canada geese migratory pattern. normally they would all fly south for the winter, but because of people feeding the geese, a large amount simply stay over the winter. i used to launch my jetski at bluffers park in scarborough, and i would see people feeding the geese right infront of the big sign telling people not to feed the geese. by the way, these things crap almost like a small dog......you really have to watch where you walk.

Don't no, but we were warned about those waters quite before the great development.......rite through the 80's. Those wildlife seems to be doing much better and looks quite happy now. We used to see birds missing portions of their wings and can't fly. :( ummmm reminds me.... how's Port Darlington, any better?

Comeon Falcon, it eh dat bad; I live in a Region two hours west of Toronto, in Waterloo Region (yep, I'm one of those residents whose home encroaches into their territory  ). Every Fall I watch as thousands of geese gather on the banks of the Grand River (a couple ah hundred yards from my back yard); they gather on an open field the size of a few foot ball fields. It is quite a spectacular sight.
Did you know that prior to 'take off' they do 'warm up flights' (that's the only thing I can equate it to). The all get in formation, the leaders fly off, a portion of the group follows, they circle around the area, then land back of the field. They go through this exercise a few times, from what I can tell, different ones take the lead. Once they have completed this exercise a few times, they finally all go. Like I said, it is quite a spectacular vision.

falcon,
i don't know what snowbird is talking about but the situation with the canada geese is so bad that the ontario ministry of the environment has had to resort to pouring oil on the eggs of the geese in an effort to control their population.

So they can't have a harvest & cull for meat, and use the same rationale as the seal cull?

a politician once floated the idea of feeding the homeless with geese, but he was roundlyand soundly criticised.
these damn animals are really good for nothing. at least the seal pups are killed for their fur/skin.

I'm not sure I understand the problem here. You have an overabundance of nice and fat geese that's creating a hazard - maybe even a health hazard with their defecation all over - to such an extent that it becomes almost impossible to walk on the sidewalks or in the parks. The citizenry is complaining, yet, when the Ministry of Health comes up with a viable solution, the same complainers criticize the plan? Like Canadians don't like their goose cooked o' wat?

Let's not paint an incorrect picture here, let me clarify.
First of all when I say 'foot path', I'm referring to a gravel path that has been cut and laid down as a 'Nature Trail' (to facilitate us walkers and runners), this path runs parallel with the river, winds under trees, and pass high grasses, around the river's edge. This was the original habitat of the geese. Likewise in Toronto, the problem is faced when you enter some city parks, again which is the habitat of these geese; it is just that so many of us 'humans' now use these parks, it has become a nusance; and yes, some population control will help; but it is certainly not a health issue for us yet as the geese tend to stay in their own environment; it is nothing more than a nuisance when we visit those areas....... Our sidewalks are still the nicest and cleanest in North America, thank you very much
Oh, and as to why we won't eat them? Dem darm bleeding hearts, I'm all for a good geese stew (as long as ah doh have tuh kill it or clean it, I doh play dat).

Yep strange things are happening in lake Ontario close to Darlington. Was looking at the show 'Real Fishing with Bob Izumi' (if you fish, you know who he is), anyway he happen to pull up a fish, only instead of a tail it has a little stump at the end of it's body....... poor mutant fish.

Lived in Pickering for 20 years before moving to Ajax and have watched the transformation of that place during that period. The old lady and I still visit there sometimes in the summer strolling along the boadwalk or munching down on pizza while listening to various bands and performers in the evening hours. It's a great place to sit and relax or take a stroll along the boardwalk. Cricket is still played near the Nuclear Plant. Both my kids played basball at the daimonds there as well.
The ducks are not in abundance as they used to be because feeding them is now prohibited. Rememberd the earlier years trying to manouvre the kids through all the duck poo on the old trail along the waterfront.
Folks used to fish there long ago, but have not seen anyone with a rod for the longest while since it was re-developed. Now there's lots of new homes in the area right down to the waters edge and the marina.
Ajax has a much longer waterfront and the ducks are in abundance there, but most of the times feeding along the shorelines in the water or near the river that runs through there. People (mostly orientals) fish along the river banks and at the river entrance into Lake Ontario. Carp is in abundace in the river and can grow up to 60 lbs. These bottom dwellers are very rarely eaten except by orientals and are mostly caught for fun because of their tough pulling power and fighting ability.

Nice links..........DRaja!
Ajax has over 465 acres of parkland and natural areas throughout the town, including many small neighbourhood parks. Many of our parks include naturalized areas, where natural vegetation is allowed to thrive.
It is great to see that some areas are still being conserved. This will help the existing wild life. To much development and overcrowding overall.
