It is with sadness I heard of the passing of an old Saints Boy, Richard DeSouza. Richard and I were classmates in Form 1, 2 and 3 before I migrated to Canada. He was an exceptional athlete representing St Marys in both cricket and footbal. He then went on to represent Trinidad in regional cricket, after his cricketing days he remained in administration as a treasurer for the local and regonal cricketing board...he was a good friend....

He was buried today

Here is a better article about him from the Trinidad Express.
De Souza succumbs to cancer
Roger Seepersad rseepersad@trinidadexpress.com

Friday, October 12th 2007
RICHARD Maurice De Souza-described by former Trinidad and Tobago captain Joey Carew as "one of the most technically sound cricketers to ever come out of Trinidad and Tobago"-died yesterday after a long battle with cancer.
Carew, who was De Souza's captain when he played for Queen's Park Cricket Club (QPCC) and for T&T, said that although his career as a player did not last very long, 1964-1973, he made a tremendous impact both on and off the field.
De Souza helped T&T claim the regional Shell Shield title, in 1970 and 1971, under the captaincy of Carew.
"It was unfortunate that De Souza never made it on the West Indies team while having all the credentials to do so," Carew said, explaining that Alvin Kallicharan emerged around the same time and had some outstanding performances, which made it difficult for De Souza to break into the regional squad.
De Souza captained the St Mary's College cricket team, leading them to five Cadbury Cup titles. But cricket was not his only sport. De Souza also played football for St Mary's. He was nicknamed "the master distributor" but never took his football to a higher level, opting to develop himself as a cricketer.

The decision paid off. In 1964, at the age of 15, De Souza made his national senior team debut.
When De Souza left St Mary's, he continued to play cricket with QPCC.
"He was a very intelligent cricket person," Carew told the Express, "and coming from St Mary's, he had the background knowledge for cricket and leadership, and it placed him in a good position for his career."
Former West Indies and T&T player and St Mary's College old boy Richard Gabriel hailed De Souza for his "excellent technique".
"He was a very good middle-order batsman and one of the game's best on-drivers. This was one of his hallmarks, with his head always directly positioned over the ball."
Gabriel lamented the fact that De Souza never made the regional squad, citing weight problems as a major factor.
"He was a good captain and he also played table tennis but he had a hard trial with his physique."
Gabriel recalled De Souza putting on a fine display for a West Indies President's XI at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, against an England team that included John Snow, one of that country's best fast bowlers in the 1960s.
"He was the captain for the President's XI and he took on the English bowlers. Fast bowler Jeff Jones and seamer David Brown were also in the English squad, and De Souza handled them very well, making around 70 and helping the team hang on for a draw."
Following his retirement from the senior national team, in 1973, De Souza acted as CEO of Flavourite Ice-Cream and held administrative positions in local and regional cricket.
Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) CEO Forbes Persaud said "De Souza was a great personality in the board room and on the field of play," and that his untimely death was a great loss.
"The TTCB is very grateful and thankful for De Souza's dedication and service to cricket over the years and he will certainly be missed."

Form 1-4 here. Though, I ran from CXC.

Still, I can reminisce about my Saint's days.

Father Dick: No joke necessary.
Mr. McCloud: Take out a book! Dooo some work!
Mr. Browne: Stand on the BENCH! Do I look as if I'm smiling to you?
This can probably apply to every French class in any school, but "Bonjour tout le mon".

The chapel windows being broken every now and again by a stray football from the small yard.
Sweeping for detention.
Begging for strokes instead of detention.
The Raz was and still is my most favourite cheer.
Mr. Bereaux wearing his pink socks and pants up high every Prefect's Concert.
The Prefect's Concert!

*cues the piano intro*
Out of the shadows of the past you come to cheer us
Boys of the old brigade of gallant CIC
And our thousand voices ring in mighty chorus
College of St. Mary's on to victory
Yonder our colours white and blue are proudly waving
Down the field our team comes sweeping crashing through
And we're urging them on, they're dashing along
On! On! Fearless and strong, go the boys of St. Mary's College
Glorious throng, loyal sons of the old white and blue
Brave hearts and true, write your name in triumphant story
Onward, march on, boys of CIC to glory!

Despite all the jokes I make, that man (Browne) was still one of the best teachers I ever had.
I retained just about 70% of everything he taught and I have all the notes to look up the other 30% that I forgot.

I think it's because he made us write everything down and then checked it.
If you had him, then you must remember rushing down the notes that you didn't get because he erased the board so fast. Unless you were one of the boys who used to share your book so folks like me didn't fail.

Mr. Browne yes...I remember him. Real good teacher. Very effective.

I also remember Mr. Attong, telling us in Form 3 all about these different web sites we could go to and newsletters to sign up for to get more info in Geography class. This was when few people had a computer, far less internet at home eh. Man was one of the early computer geeks.

Mr. Rajah. People could real say things about him...but you know what, now that I've graduated and look back on it, you just do not find dedicated people like him anymore. I remember him as Form 6 dean with the office split in two, so the front part was free entry to the students anytime. Man used to come in Sunday mornings to open up classrooms for study and all yes.

Mr. Attong.
Hehe. He had a breakdown one day when I was in form 2. Literally no one did the homework and he left the class. He kinda stood outside and leaned on them big green cement railings for about 20 minutes breathing hard. People close to the door say he was crying (I can neither confirm or deny this). He was a bit of a pushover.

And Mr. Rajah was always cool to me. Probably because I had detention so much.
"You again?"

Speaking of teachers. I didn't know that Mr. Joseph is vice-principal?
Then again, apart from a one day return in form 5 to make a cameo in the prefects' concert and the graduation dinner, I never really went back to check anyone. I just saw all the people I limed with after school anyway, so there was no real point.

anybody going dwts 08?

saturday july 5th.

The dinner was great. Good food. Of course I stayed clear of Colm Imbert and Mariano Browne's dishes( I wonder if they completed them on time and within budget... :D )

Anyway, it was the first time back in school after 7 years and boy it brought back some memories. Some good, some bad but I was glad to be part of the old brigade of gallant CIC. My best years were forms 2 and 6.

I remember being in the lawn mowing squad in form 3. When all the catholics had RK the non-catholics had horticulture. Also those who arrived to school early had to sweep and mop the form 3 area. I still think it was some form of child labour but the experience was ok i guess. No i take that back. It was horrible but I can only laugh about it now.

I was also in the Assessment Book committee. Boy was that a drag. The penalty for having a good handwriting.

I was in the so called school band Explosion. That didn't last long. Ha that was really funny. We entered one year for a prefect's concert and got a consolation prize. The band spilt up after that.

Anyhow those were some of the best years of my life and I regret not making the most of some of them.

Someone trying to get me to go to Saints Fete 2009. I'll see....

i got this today on facebook:

Greetings from the President

To All CIC Alumni on Facebook

Dear Fellow Past Student of St. Mary's College,

My name is Richard Joseph and I am the outgoing President of the St. Mary's College Past Students' Union.

As I come to the end of my term, there are two things that I want to put in place for my successor and both of them involve those Past Students who participate in Facebook

Firstly, I extend an invitation to all those who have not yet joined the Past Students' Union to do so at this time. I look forward to formally welcoming you into the fold of the Union and in this regard, you should complete the online Application Form, available on the Union's website http://www.cicpsu.org. Upon your application for membership being accepted, your name will be on the official members' register and you will begin to receive all official correspondence issued by the Union.

Secondly, I am making a special appeal to all of you to participate in the project that the Union has embarked on to assist the alma mater. Our Fund Raising Committee is busily engaged in preparing for Dining With The Saints (DWTS) 2008. The full proceeds will be used to assist the College in buying a new bus to replace the existing one (23 years old) that was there before some of you entered College. A new bus is needed to take students on educational field trips, to take the younger ones to Grounds for P.E. which is now compulsory and to transport the teams that represent CIC in various sporting disciplines.

From DWTS 2008 we hope to raise about two-thirds of the $310k required to purchase the bus. We will be short by some $105k plus another $50k for insurance. We very much want to meet the full cost of the bus and for this reason, we are asking each of you to send us a donation, preferably at least the equivalent of US$20 dollars. You should send your donation

· by cheque to St. Mary's College Past Students' Union, St Mary's College, Frederick St, POS, Trinidad, W.I. or

· Credit Card authorization to the St. Mary's College Past Students' Union, by ringing Sedley Joseph on +1 868 624 8468 indicating that it is a donation for the purchase of the new bus.

I look forward to a positive response on both counts.

Yours in St. Mary's College,

Richard Joseph,
President

In regards to the assemblies, I only remember the near-riotous Intercol meetings (chairs getting pelted on a few occasions) and Fr. Dick keeping everyone behind for a good 40 minutes until the person(s) with the laser pointer came forward.

I have another one for you young fellas. The Priests dining room in my day was upstairs in the small yard at the end of the balcony on the north and every lunch time there was a big betting pool as to the winner-first into the lunch room- with caricature horse whipping and all.

When father Dick was a Brother he was in charge of the choir and all had to try out by singing the "do ray me". I got as far as ray.

And we did a survey to determine in our year who had the most long penance and the winner was---I still respect this guy so I will not name him.

And in our day we were a team to be reckoned with in intercol-not like the last few years.

I went to Fatima but I have fond memories of playing against Saint Mary's athletes like Richard DeSouza and Russell Teshiera (both now deceased). Russell was married to the PNM Minister who presenting all them nice budgets. I also remember Ian "Chala" Dore, Ian Bain, Ken Butcher, and Dr.Alvin Henderson. Them was some nice fellas.

There was a priest called Fr.Anthony DeVerteiul that used to be in Fatima and later went to Saint Marys. I believe that he is still around. If so, I have to look him up. He played a major role in my development.

All them fellas was older than me but I still see Ken Butcher fairly often and Alvin Henderson occasionally. I missed the CIC Fete this year but you run into many school friends at this fete annually.

We had two Father DeVerteiul-one was the Principal and the other was just a priest :D . can not remember first names. When I was in Form 4 -I was voted school prefect-it used to be a school wide election- and Fr. DeVerteuil came to see me and told me if there was anything he could do to stop me from being a school prefect he would do it-and then called on my better nature to do the job well.

We had to supervise penance-both short and longs-penance for Prefects too-and one day a fella name Farfan cuss mih mother in the penance room and I floored him with a right but DeVerteuil turned out to be quite reasonable in view of the circumstances
