a political party asked me to join their 'ground team' and start walking-around with them throughout my constituency.
i declined.
now i'm wondering whether i declined for the wrong reasons. i just didn't want to be associated with a political party even though i will more than likely support and vote for the party, but i didn't want the perception of being involved to be attached to me.
is this selfish? am i failing to see the bigger picture and stand-up for my beliefs? or is this the smartest and safest thing to do?
hypothetically, what would YOU do in these circumstances?

I would turn it down but more because of my lack of time :P
Seriously though, it is a difficult decision to move from supporter to canvasser. As a supporter you can be more objective...as a canvasser you become that much closer to the inner ranks. It's not for everyone. I would think long and hard about it, and I have no idea what conclusion I would come to if such a situation were to present itself to me.

none of the parties contesting this elections excites me enough to publicly canvass for them, but if they did I would have no problem doing it.

This is why middle class parties will always have a tough time in T&T.

You say that 'middle class parties will always have a tough time in T&T' - I think you mean the 'upper' class - those who have had it so good for such a long time, that they have never had to fight to get good jobs, get into the best schools, get favorable bank loans, and no matter who wins, will continue to live abundantly in T & T. Haven't you noticed how in the US both the Republicans and Democrats are fighting for the 'minority' vote. The poor 'grass roots' will always have to be won over to win an election - whether in the UK, USA, or T&T. Thus the reason that, in spite of your poll, COP cannot win - shades of the ONR? You have to check the support bases of both the PNM and the UNC to see why they will more easily win in the elections.

Thought about this only today, but I prefer to stay on the sidelines. You always hear people saying that "PNM till dey dead" or "UNC till they dead" stupid. God alone know what those parties have done for them. I decided to let nature take its course, therefore won't comment on every issue. Our people are not stupid. Whatever the result, I believe it will be best for our country. Which ever will get my vote on the day.

That is why they made education free from nursery to tertiery; all that access to education regardless of background or income level should shrink the middle class in no time.

Having access to education does not mean being educated, Primary education was always free yet we still had 30% failure at CE and those who went on to High School 40% came out with full Passes in at Least 5 subjects

What really is the "middle class". To my mind, these are the people harking back to the "good old days" when Jemina worked in their homes from dawn to dusk - 7 days a week, Daisy came twice a week to wash and iron, and Sonny worked in the garden, and $100 could pay them for a month's labour, with change to boot. Those days are over and we should get over it. Today, every worker knows that they deserve a living wage and rightly so. We look at too much TV and see lifestyles that are not realistic - not even for Americans - and we crave that. We are a self-indulgent people, we lack gratitude. We have a flood of 6" of water and we're ready to bawl 'murder'. Yet when we look at recent floods in Jamaica, the UK and USA, we see water up to the roof of many houses. Wake up T & T - we have a beautiful country, we have so much going for us - yet we have become complainers and grumblers - and you know what the good book says: "Complainers and grumblers the Lord detests!"

stewwps doh worry wid dem sylvestter, if yu ent inclined to walk in sun and rain and tell people vote for we nah, then that is yuh choice, stewps doh let nobody make you feel guilty for dat...what kinda politics them running behind...ole talk and race..that's all....nothing to follow.....when yuh have something worthwhile to follow, you will....leave dem and they fight-dong...... :|
i don't think that i will canvass for any party.. no matter how much i support them... its just not worth my time... i guess i also don't have the personality to walk and try to convince ppl to vote for any party...
i've heard ppl say yes they supportin yuh and then when yuh leave they place they say something else...ppl's mind are usually made up either its based on racial, social, or other factors... which sometimes you just cannot change..
i admire those candidates who have to do that and sometimes get the ole talk from ppl about this party and that party...
