how prevalent is identity theft in this country?
i'm quite curious.
i stumbled upon a radio programme on the subject this morning, and did not realize that this was supposedly flourishing...
does anyone have any stories, accounts, statistics or examples?

TRINIDADIANS have no identity. We copy everything from every other country,JAMAICA'S reggae, NEW YORK'S winter boots, BRAZIL'S carnival, we bring foreign artiste to perform for our election, we play too much of foreign music, we outlaw corporal punishment in schools, like de AMERICANS,we are copycats. WE HAVE NO IDENTITY.

Define identity theft?
I've seen plenty of people try to pass off credit cards with fake photo ID. I've also seen scams where they send out "official documents" claiming to be from banks and such, for unsuspecting people to fill out and send in.
I myself am paranoid. Regardless if the threat exists or not, nobody gets my personal info without damn good reason.

Credit card was cloned 2 weeks ago; bank picked it up when transactions went through in Spain and Italy. Got a new card but still have to claim back for the illegal purchases.

When the credit card is stolen and used, do you have to pay the charges and then they credit you after investigations?

yes, the transactions were approved, then the pattern of spending appeared abnormal. They then called me to ask me to validate the transactions or cancel the card.

Ha! No way. Pick anyone in Europe or even wider afield. These are well oiled teams belonging to global organised crime...

There was a program about that on msnbc. It was amazing to see how fast purchases were made all over the world with the same credit card. They even show how identities were stolen from websites. Take a look http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17938789/.

When the credit card is stolen and used, do you have to pay the charges and then they credit you after investigations? In the US, i think you are not responsible if it the theft is reported within a certain time. It could be 48 hours, i am not sure, and there is limit, but insurance is now sold to cover credit card theft.
