1 & 3 because of the contrast in focus between fore and background. Emphasises the subject matter to perfection.
8 solely because of the content. Green is relaxing always, and I like monotony.

falcon and tai.. say why u dis/liked those.. d lady wants to hear more than 'nice' and 'fav'i like the subject matter and the prehistoric looking leaves. it's interesting to me.
okay v i eh no expert.. u know dat
i think that right now, given the camera yuh using, u should be concerned with composition (u cover that in d course yet) see u can hve d best equipment and if yuh doh know what to have in d pictear then all iz lost. U did rule of thirds yet? I find that rule does be broken many ah times and d pictear does still be good.
I like d composition in the first one but the other one in ur flickr stream is nicer becasue its not really a macro shot so more of the flowers added to the overall look.
was the pepper shot a macro? If so you cud have gone in closer. Did you notice that the stem is cutting the pepper? Try to retake without the stem being there. if you look at other pepper shots u'll see there's usually a nice shine.. some professionals even coat their vegies in oil to get d shine.. or so I've read.
Comments and honest criticism please. note i only just started and these are my first shots.

I like the lantana but notice the pot in the lower bg.. its distracting a bit. (I want to get some of these around my house cause they supposed to attract monarchs)
the other composition doesnt too much justice to the flower.. what exactly were u trying to take an image of?

thanks very much for the feedback amzz! I really appreciate it :)
we are covering dof, composition and rule of thirds in this course. Covering it in classroom and actually putting it in practice are two very different things. I am realizing that it takes quite a number of shots to get the one you actually want!
Its quite fun learning and getting tips/advice from people who have experience in this area and practice is key.
also remembering to switch modes on the camera is something i have to do, couple times when i thought it was on macro it wasn't . Now i can explore and understand what certain functions are on my camera. I only now figure out that i could change the iso as well!

Vaio,
That's a good lens especially for that pice but it kinda slow though - F4.5. However, before you decide on buying a lens check out the following:
http://mansurovs.com/nikon-55-300mm-vr-review
You can review all the other lenses on this site too. I don't think this lens will sell for much less though come Friday - maybe $10-$15 less at most, and they might even be out of stock. If you really want to get the lens, then do so at this price from Amazon now and keep checking after Thursday, starting around midnight NY time. If it is far less expensive, then you can order a new one and cancel the original order but check Amazon's return policy and/or price matching policy.
Good luck and happy reading/studying. Remember, the lens you buy today will last a lifetime. Many of my Nikon lenses are more than 35+ years old and although some are all manual and fixed, like my 50mm f1.2, it still works in my D100X.
The best advice that I can give you is to buy the best lens. That's what makes the picture regardless of the camera's body. The only other thing to consider in a Digital Camera is the CMOS sensor but since you already have a D3000 (?), or is it a D5100(?), buy the best lens, even if you have to wait. Camera bodies will always get better and cheaper so you can upgrade the body in the future. On the other hand, the lenses will not change that much unless you plan on upgrading them to professional level lenses.
Thanks very much Guy! I have a lot of reading to do but its actually good reading.
I'm not buying it through Amazon, someone is purchasing it for me in the US, but not sure where and the price may not be too far off.
The 50mm will be for nex year when i start doing portraits, but doh start tempting me lol
I trying to stick with the nikkor lens but them so damn expensive, the 70-300mm is about US$589 :blink (which is more than what i paid for my camera :s:)
for bw...

Vaio,
Would you put rethread tires on a Ferrari? Like I said, the lens is the critical component in the camera system. Stick to the Nikkorr lenses. Don't fall for the Tamrons and those knock-offs. Wait if you have to and save up your money but buy the Nikkorrs. I know too many people that have bought inferior lenses only to end up buying the original manufacturers' lenses.
Why not get the 55-300mm Nikkorr instead?
BTW; 85mm is said to be the best focal length for portraits. You can step back away and get a truer rendition of the subject. Ask those people on the photography forum which focal length lens is best for portraits.

d fact that u does do as if money does grow on trees
if you plan life well ... it does grow on tress and in your pockets as well .. as you reach our age ...good planning .. good invsetments .... you will be suprised ...
anyway i agree that the 85-135mm focal length range is ideal for portrait photography .. it depends on what you want in the background ..
you usually want the background to go out of focus and disappear.... i have alwys had fun with Canon Tamron lenses..
but Pentax has been good .. now i have bags of cameras and lenses and tripods .. and rely on a simple Sony Cybershot ..
.
oh gawd oye poser have ah money tree

d fact that u does do as if money does grow on treesAye gyul. When you're going to buy something that you expect to last for a long time and one that will give you immense pleasure and great service under extreme conditions, then buy the best there is and you'll never regret it. This was the advice given to me by a very kind and knowledgeable photographer in 1973 when I purchased my first Honeywell SLR. All of my camera equipment was purchased over a period of many years and have served me very well. Hence, I have a multitude of lenses that are top of the line and have never regretted the purchases. It wasn't a matter of "money growing on trees" but long times saving every penny instead of squandering on frivolous items that allowed me to amass what I have.
Well i ent have a money tree but i doh want to have comprise quality for price. I believe if you want good thing, then spend good money. That said, i know quite a few professional photographers who started off with sigma or tamron lenses and were quite happy with their performance.
As a beginner, i want to be able to keep and use my lenses if i do decide to upgrade. Even though some of the reviews are good for tamron, sigmas, etc there is no doubt that the nikkor lenses perform better.
Anyway, i put in meh order - ah going with the 55-300mm Nikkor lens.

i was trying for rule of thirds with the second temple shot - a little more to the left and going in a lil more would have gotten that (1/3 - pyre and temple - 2/3)

I never got to take any serious pics (just snapshots) of carnival because I'm always doing something.
