bizarre...
i feel so sad and constantly unwell...
is this triggered by stress?
can't remember that last time i was so sad. for no reason in particular. all weekend long. and driving to work i kept having visions to crashing and death.
don't know what's wrong with me. don't really particularly want to talk to anybody
i'm just very very sad :(

syl, Im sorry, so sorry to hear this.
I'm no expert but I've had some dealings with someone who has similar feelings.
Normally we all feel depressed at some point in time. But most of us are able to move on after a while.
If you are not able to do so, especially with the suicidal thoughts, please go see a psychiatrist... please.

Like a physical problem, I feel it is best to start with your family doctor. He/she should be able to point you in the right direction.

Like trini suggested go to ur dr first, tell him what ur feeling and probably he can steer u in the right direction - don't go on not getting help pls, that's no good. I can undersatnd that u want to be alone - but not all d time eh. Pls get help - whether it's professional or if it's just talking with someone who u know and who cares and loves u(and I'm sure there are lots of those). Take care.

sylvestter,
You have two options here so whichever you feel is most beneficial to you and your loved ones, do it.
1. Take the advice of the other posters and seek competent medical help immediately. There is psychological and medicine to help with depression. I know what I'm talking about her breds.
2. Get a length of rope, climb up a tall tree, tie one end around your neck and the other to a really strong branch. Then jump.

Syl.... the good news is that you don’t have to feel this way .... help is available .... all you have to do is ask.
You also have more power over depression than you think.

Well, sylvestter is a highly intelligent young man who has quite a lot of positive things going for him so I'm certain he'll choose option #1. We all suffer with bouts of depression that are triggered by various sources. For example, I'm depressed right now because I'd much prefer to be in T&T - SoE and all - but I know this is a rebound effect brought on by the wonderful time I spent recently in T&T and I'll just have to work my way through it until it passes.
Depression can be latent which can be hereditary and show up unexpectedly in adulthood without us realizing the cause. The severity can vary widely. I knew an entire family, from father to mother to children that suffered from depression as adults. Neither spoke of their bouts of depression with each other, thinking that their problem was unique, until a family member accidentally mentioned his "problem" at a family gathering. Suddenly, everyone started piping up with their own stories until they all realized that this may be hereditary. After visiting their doctors, they were treated medically and last I heard, all were doing just fine.

Many guys have a problem coming to terms with the notion that they may be depressed. Whether it is situational or due to an underlying medical condition of varying chronicity, the fact is, you cannot just wish yourself back to optimum serotonin levels. There is no weakness in seeking medical help.
Syl, have you been attending ur swim/spin classes? Exercise and being involved in a hobby are two recommendations for battling depression.

so guyguy, eef someone has ah light case of depression, without de usual blatant symtoms, how do fahmahly members or friends recognize such? an how do dey in ah constructive way deal wid dah situation?Hi Shaddeck,
Let me state that I am not a physician nor a medical doctor so I do not wish to seem as though I'm dispensing medical advice. That being understood; everyone becomes depressed at one time or another depending on the circumstances - a death, loss of job, family squabbles, etc., - but these are short-term and relatively temporary from which we recover in a reasonable length of time. These symptoms may range the gamut from being very mild to extremely severe whereby we not only comtemplate but actually commit suicide.
Recognizing a "mild" case by family members is very difficult unless the symptoms are prolonged or recur frequently. For example, if your child dies, one would expect a loving parent to suffer an initial severe bout of depression which, over time, tends to dissipate to a milder form of depression that may last for years. On the other hand, if your garden is destroyed by the neighbour's cow, you may suffer a mild form of depression after taking out your anger by killing the cow and having a BBQ for your village - for seeing your hard work having been destroyed by the unconcerned cow. Soon, you'll get over it and carry on with your daily life; maybe plant another garden and institute remedial measures to prevent this from recurring. This would be easy to spot by family and friends, and dealing constructively with that situation is relatively simple (other than advising or helping you to kill the cow).
Chronic depression is a different kettle of fish altogether and the consequences are always extremely severe and frequently tragic. This is relatively easy to spot but requires the intervention of professionals that are trained in treating this malady. As I've stated before, chronic depression may be hereditary. It may also arise from a childhood traumatic experience, a chemical imbalance, or even genetic. Only an extensive work-up by competent professionals who are equipped to make a correct diagnosis and prescribe an appropriate curative or maintenance treatment can help.

Depression is second only to hypertension as the most common chronic condition encountered in
general medical practice. Despite its prevalence, depression is not taken seriously. Yet depression
is also a killer, through suicide and other related conditions like alcoholism and drug addiction.
Another problem with diagnosis is that there are probably several distinct types of depression, like
seasonal affective disorder, where depression has a strong seasonal component, where weight gain,
and increased apetite feature. Another complicating factor is negative life events themselves seem
to be partially heritable, probably due to passing on poor life management skills within a family.

Have you moved in the last 3 years or so, or are you living the same place for some 10years or more.
Sometimes a change in environment can lead to gradual change towards depression.
Moving to a cold environment for example and getting less sunlight, change in diet and activity.

According to the revised learned helplessness theory depression occurs when an individual
experiences negative events as uncontrollable, but also attributes them to causes which are
internal to the self, stable over time, and global in their impact of areas of the individual's life.
Sociologically inclined researchers have also emphasised the importance of social support as
providing a buffer for women when facing stress, explaining why more isolated women are
prone to depression. Men on the other hand had to be more prone to depression secondary to
goal function.
-Brown, G. W., and Harris T. (1978) Social Origins of Depression.
Major depression was cited by the WHO as the fourth main causes of burden
of disease in the world in 1990, and its is projected that by 2020 it will then
occupy first place in developing countries, and third place in developed ones.

My friend just got over her depression for now. She has no worries, a well paid part time job, good health, supportive husband but feeling depressed for the past 2 months. She was taking some medication that was helping but was having some side effect so she took it off.
