View Full Version : Cyber Bullies........ have you encountered any? (part 2)

It would appear that the latest twist to the Cyber Bullying is the practice of children/students using the internet to bully each other.
It has been brought to the attention of some parents and teachers that this is now the latest form of bullying.
Whose responsibility do you think it would it be to address issues such as this?

I think parents leave technology (internet, phones, etc) way too accessible for children these days and there is no control or responsibility on how this is being utilized. So I think is the responsibility of the parents to make sure they know what their kids do online.
parents need to get into their children's business....see what they are doing and check on them....

While I agree with having the computer in a common area so that you can keep an eye, especially on the younger children to make sure first and foremost that they are on safe sights, and also, not up to any mischief  .
OK, but when you say check on them, would it be appropriate for say the parent of a teenager to have their pass word so that they can go into their e-mails to see what they are up to?

By definition is it = " the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others".
Have you experienced any instances of cyber bullying..... and if so, what do you think motivated the 'Bully'?
In my case I can share.....yes, I have experienced Cyber-Bullying.... the motivation I think is based on two things...
1. the 'Bully' appeared to be very a insecure person..... displayed many hang-ups .... and from the communications posted....carried around ....all kinds of 'lumber'
2. the only way the 'Bully' could find to build him/herself up...was by tearing others down.... the thing is though, the Bully would only pick on those who appeared to be ...grounded, secure in who they were... and comfortable in their skin....for some reason, the 'Bully' was threatened by this type of individual.
What was your experience?

Interesting because in my observation the bullies actually picked on "weaker" individuals (or those who appear to be weak) or those who are sensitive (or in the extreme, thin skinned) and the bully know they will get a reaction from them.
But if you think about it, if the person is completely ignored they will look pretty stupid if they continue with the behavior but because the victim in these cases cannot help it and they do give a reaction then the whole thing becomes a vicious cycle, IMO.

Me ent hah no experience with cyber bullying because I is ah cyber badjohn.
But ah see ah cyber bully kick some cyber sand in ah cyber moderator face, then tun rong and cuss up he cyber mudder so and so.
The moderator was cyber grounded, and cyber secure in who he was.
I thought that I was on cyber George street that night.
That is de wuss case ah cyber bullying that I ever see.
To this day, the cyber bullyied ent show he face back on dah board.
But as Solachica did ask back on this same thread in 2008, before it was sanitized and pasteurized, "People does take themselves seriously on this board?"
And that is the crux of the problem.
If yuh chupid enough tuh mix yuh real life with yuh cyber life, so that yuh don't know yuh real persona from yuh cyber persona, then yuh need tuh see ah real psychiatriss.

first chica.... bullies pick on anyone ..... as long as an opportunity presents itself, and they know they can get away with it.... the optimum word being .....Opportunity... the nature of Cyber Space allows these sick people to operate with impuntiy....after all, they know they never have to come 'face to face' with their chosen target..... Unlike a face to face encounter where their target knows them., and can look them in the eye....these people hide behind the walls of Cyber space....that is the only way they can muster up enough courge to continue....I am sure if you were to meet these people in person, you will find that they pass themselves off and ....wonderful upstanding people.... not the vermin that they are....
And yes, the way to dis-empower these people would be to ignore them....However human nature being what it is.... it is not easy ignoring them....especially when they continue to target you....even when you are not engaged in any dialogue with them. Your only recourse at that point would be to appeal to any decency in them to cease..... however, being the nature of the beast....sometimes that just does not work.
BZ.... my feeling is....ONCE is a mistake, twice a habit.... repeatedly simply reflects lifestyle or who you are.
I have seen people make A mistake.... immiediately see it as a gros mistake....admit that it was....apologize and move on.
I have also seem people who make it a habit of being offensive.... almost as though they were going from instinct.... in which case once it is pointed out to them that they are being offensive....they are remorseful and make every effort not to offend.
Then there are those who through some ignorance think they are entitled to be offensive to others.... for some reason this group thinks they are 'entitled' due to some series of circumstances..... these are the people who refuse to own up to their actions, rather than take responsibility for their bad behavoir....they will go into tangents of ....'but someone was worse than me'......for some reason they always catagorize themselves as being the 'best of the worse' ..... rather than at least striving for being 'the worse of the best (yes, there is a difference)
..... Truth be known, this is how this 'sick group' gets their 'jollies'.
I think it is that latter group that makes up the bulk of Cyber Bullies.... they have found a medium that allows them unbridled opportunity to continue with their 'bad behavoir'....and endless targets to choose from.
just my two cents.

There are a lot of programs set up to teach people about cyber bullying and it is unfortunate that the word is not being spread to assist people who are being cyber bullied. One such program in the US that I know of is "I-safe" which was founded in 1998 and approved by Congress.
Will find a link and post it later.

Maybe because the intent on most forums.... is to interact with each other....civilly..... and there is always the hope that when a subject is posted that we speak to the topic and not get involved in personal jabs.....just for so.
I have been turned off of more good threads, or elected not to even participate simply because certain Cyber Bullies will derail a perfectly good thread..... just for so
....Generally I find those Cyber Bullies have very little to offer to the 'topic'.. offer next to nothing in terms of 'sharing' useful information..... or even giving a positive opinion.... it seems like their only interst in being in Cyber Space.... is to satisfy their sick need.... to display how ignorant, classless, and debasing they can be....they generally choose, and freely use expressions you and I would never consider..... again.... I guess ..... for effect....just for so...you'd have to wonder that if the Bully met you in person if he/she would be so potty mouth.... if not, then why do it in cyber space.... I just don't get it.
The sad part about it is that.... forums like this...offer these sick people just the type of platform they crave…. So I guess my further question is …..have any of you encountered any Cyber Bullies on any other forum….. I can only speak for this one…. And another that I was on briefly (when TTOL) was out of commission..

In masa day respect is something that was 'demanded' or commanded (and it would appear some have not moved on from that day)..... respect was expected to be given simply because the person had a title....or held an office.
Unfortunately there are some today who are still pompos enough to think that they 'automatically get respect' simply because they fill a role (and the sad part is they will do everything possible to get the role....even lobby openly)...look at your T&T politicians....some of them are as classless as the hooligans on the street...yet they expect to be ...respected.
The sad part is ....these people 'covet positions' simply because other misguided peers actually see them in a position of reverence once the attain this 'title' (so silly) ...they speak of them in terms of .... Oh higher and exhaulted one" ..... Come-on...these people are mere mortals ..... just like us...let's throw off the shackles of colonialism..... and not pay homage where homage isn't due.
.... In my world.... respect has to be earned, and the way you earn it is by being respectful yourself .....I have encountered a few people in my life who do not warrent my respect..... with the exception of ONE INSTANCE ON THIS FORUM (if it were something I did on a regular basis....even more than once....I am sure I would have been banned for it...Mr. Pot)
....I generally try to be civil in my expressions..... yes, I love the Trini venecular..... but I draw the line at using obscenities in my regular conversations and communications..... Yes, I can assume a pesona.... but being common and vulgar will neve be part of any persona of mine.....'neither will being a Cyber Bully'.... an eh dat good at being mean.

Your country must be so proud that you go to such extremes to defend it's integrity... You may want to take note how others defend their country with civility....even dignity/
Anyway, would love to her from others on the subject of cyber bullying..... I would even like to hear from those others who also think there is a very good reasons why they should continue to engage in Cyber Bullying..... let's hear your excuse....ooops story.

It is truly sad that over the last ten years, the easy availability of Internet access has allowed anyone with an axe to grind, or with a general sense of "DohKayDam" about their fellow people, to troll forums.
After spam, this is the second most annoying thing on the internet.
For a taste of the depths to which people will sink, check the responses to articles on the online Express.
I keep wondering how some of them get past the mods.
Unfortunately, this sort of thing is done mostly by the ignorant and illiterate.
Also unfortunately, there are some otherwise smart people for whom hiding behind anonymity in order to guttersnipe is a godsend.
It reveals to themselves their true character.
The Social Networking craze of the past few months is another breeding ground for the shallow, vain and illiterate.
While these networks have the potential to revolutionise modern global communications, this is rapidly being offset by the amount of online garbage.
Just like there are two types of car drivers, the considerate and the a-holes, so too, Forum posters worldwide.
Unless moderators develop Stalinesque policies like on this forum, do you see this changing? Neither do I.
