If it's anything like the 'Smart Cars' .......... Noooooooooooooo
Besides, I can guarantee you, at that price, it would never stand up to the Canadian Winters
I guess a more interesting question would be...... With a name like TATA
would any Trini buy one?

Well TATA is about to buy Jaguar and Land Rover.
No one knows for sure the technology used to build the care , only the engineers at TATA knows .
So onlt the TATA engineers can guarantee or not whether the car will stand up to the Canadian Winter.

They are saying that this car is a potential environmental desaster waiting to happen, because it so cheap almost anyone can afford to buy one.

Well, in Parts of southern Africa, these are quite common:[attachment=0:c81ba]TATA.JPG[/attachment:c81ba]
Hopefully, these cars are affordable to most Indians, and hpefully, too, they will help the country move away from the bicycle and auto rikshaws. Hopefully, it will eliminate those aweful bicycle rikshaws that seem so inhumane. I love the auto rikshaws though. They are a very inexpensive short distance mode of transport in India.

Duplicate topics merged...
This is a disaster waiting to happen. While yes it is good that the poor man can afford a car, look at this thing...top speed 60mph, no passenger wing mirror, no airbags. And the volume that will hit the roads will be a traffic and environmental nightmare. Good idea, but perhaps the wrong timing. Maybe if India had better road infrastructure and this was some sort of electric vehicle it would be better...I also insist on there being a passenger wing mirror if nothing else.

Actually there was an indept feature on this in one of our National Papers yesterday; this car was really meant to replace some of the bicycles, rikshaws and 'mo-ped' types of cycle that East Indians now use, apparently it is customary to see multiple people on these cycles right now; the CEO of Tata is hoping to offer this demographic (especially people who live out in the rural areas) a cheap but safter means of transport. It is certainly not mean to compete with the traditional auto industry.
Oh and by the way, they are only a two cylinder vehicle; and while they claim to be a five seater, I would have to say it may be five very 'small' people, can't see a rush for them in North America even if gas is predicted to hit $1.50 a litre by this Summer

Sorry for duplicate oecarb, I would not buy one..
I will get a full size hybrid, It may be more safe with the same miles per gallon, an a whole lot more space.

Great !
Why should only the rich screw up the environment and get away with it ?

^^^ Exactly. Why should someone in a poor country have to carry around his family on a bicycle while the richer countries cram their fat arses in SUVs?
Good for them!

some countries have now put deadlines on auto manufacturers (and other manufacturers) for implementing emission controls; not sure if India is one of those. Even further, I know right here in Ontario (and I think in British Columbia) we have to get an emissions test done on our cars every two years, if your car fails the test, you have to have the problem fixed and have the car retested before they will renew your sticker (road license).
More power to the Tatas for thinking about all those rikshawwalas who work so hard for a living. I hope the price will come down though, and made more affordable for those who need them most, and still can't afford them. Let us hope the Tatas will make enough money to subsidize them, if they are not already doing so with that low price.

Personally, I think that emissions test is a scam- Doing it for years and my cars always pass well below the limit. Also, I see old nasty cars are exempted from the test. Those are the ones with blue stinky smoke coming out of the tail pipe. An SUV creates probably enough CO2 for 10 nanos. All I am saying is if the West is free to drive then we should all (global) have that freedom.

Your car like mine always pass, the reason why it does is because you like me probably drive late model cars, and thanks to the government's regulation the builders had to meet certain standards. It's just a matter of time before those old 'clunkers' with the 'blue stuff' are off the road (some years ago, I had to scrap one of mine  ).
One of the biggest contributors to auto emissions is the idling of engines, that happens when you cram more cars onto roadways that weren't meant to handle those volumes. In a case like India where the some of that infrastructure was designed to carry pedestrians (rickshaws, bikes etc) and are now going to be jammed with these low budget cars, can you imagine the pollution?
