View Full Version : Is the murder rate affecting Carnival?

I was just wondering.
I'm not a carnival person so I eh know whats the impact on the fetes thus far. Though from what I heard most fetes went on like normal and there is now a scramble to get tickets to Witco's fete (anbody with tickets to sell PM meh).
The only impact as far as I'm aware is the incresed prices of fetes blamed on the promise of increased security and to act as a deterrent against certain untouchables attending. I suppose the same could be said for the price of costumes.
So, murder or no, is party like usual?

more likely that carnival will affect the murder rate, there is usually a spike in crime around Carnival time, isn't there ?
you are right scorps...crime does increase....but that aint stoppin the party.

Some of the reason I imagine for an increase in crime for carnival are :
Bandits want money to buy clothes and tickets for carnival parties they go out and rob innocent people, and in the heat of things, they could even shoot and kill thier victims.
More potential victims, easier targets because people let their guard down when they go out to lime for carnival.
Carnival tourist, another target group for criminals.
With many police officers working at fetes, and other carnival events, there is less police presence elsewhere.
Crimes like rape become more prevalent for obvious reasons.

All of the Expats I know who usually return to T&T for the Winter, and in particular Carnival, are not deterred by the crime rate; they all still maintain that they will be relatively safe (this they say as they cross their fingers and sign themselves :) )

Sola, there are matters before the courts right now in which members of the TTPS and the TTDF are accused of being the master minds of crimes.

Of course is party like usual! The statistics could be three times higher and people would still going to party, smile for the cameras and dance like going out of style.

Expats talking to their loved ones back home are hearing that the crime situation is for the most part 'Gang Related', and that there hasn't been any particular spike in overall crime, in other words...... "come one down, Carnival is going to be a blast"
..... And Oh, as of today, Zoom flying out of Pierson still has space on their flight leaving next Tuesday, not too late tuh geh ah ticket
