In the Guardian yesterday and today, Bishop Calvin Bess (Anglican) is reported as saying that if the current murder rate continued, then soon women would have difficulties getting mates. "The population of available men will be so limited men will have no choice but to have multiple women as partners, which in the end will be a crisis in itself" Bess said.

If this is reported correctly, I am left truly speechless. Now a bishop is meant to have a brain and use it before he speaks. First, the murder rate is extraordinarily high, but nowhere near where it needs to be, and not so exclusively confined to males, as to create a statistically significant imbalance. As for the second part of the statement, even if there was a shortage of men, "men will have no choice but to have multiple women as partners"??? No choice??? And this is from an Anglican bishop? Telling us we will have no choice but to have multiple women?

As for Archbishop Barbara Burke, she is reportedly "hopeful that God will make a divine intervention as murders continue to plague this country".

One bishop telling us polygamy will be our only choice, the other don't worry, God will intervene and everything will be fine. Lord help us. If these are the people meant to provide moral leadership, very little wonder nothing ever gets better...

Well he does have a point. Not the polygamy point, but the point that there will be a shortage of young men soon enough if the present statistics continue or worsen. There already seems to be a void in the professional men grouping where women far outnumber men. Now this. Seriously, what are the implications for the women of the country? But this isnt a discussion for the crime board unless we going to see women attacking their horning partners.

That there ultimately might be a shortage of men in certain section of society is true, and that that would have an impact on women and children is fairly obvious, but we are not there yet.

What I find incredible is that religious leaders have nothing better to contribute than rum-shop level drivel.

To a certain extent, the blatant lack of quality in most of the local religious leadership can be blamed for the moral breakdown of the country, and therefore runaway crime. Their job is to inspire their followers to do good and live right. How does making newspaper headlines with stupid statements in direct contradiction with what the Anglican church stands for (ie believing in God-given personal choice) help in any way shape or form?

The other thing Barbara Burke had to say, besides accusing Bess of giving up (never miss an opportunity to knock the competition), was that things were not quite as bad as in Iraq. Well since she appointed herself "Archbishop", she outranks the bishop, so I guess she knows best...I am just waiting to see what one of the self-appointed "prophets" (I think we have quite a few), who outranks them all, will come up with...

If young men how does thing thing work now anyway? You think is 1:1....how many village rams and sires are there in the various villages and towns of TT? Maybe if they are removed, the ratio may normalise!! If bonafide men are removed from the population, ent more people (at least half of them men) have to come in from outside TT to take their jobs and women?? Why we doing as if Trinidad have a static number of people?

The problem with trinidad is that people forgot their culture and religion, they forgot where they came from :( .With changing times people are just filled with greed and hate. Living in a society that has nothing to offer them but corruption,dispear and fear.All the government from the very top is corrupted. People living in dispear of what tomorrow will bring and people fearing for their lives if they walk out of their house they probably would not come back alive.This is not life ,this is worst than the free bird that used to fly but is now caged and has lost it's freedom.People need to have god in their lives and they need to remember what god's vengence is like.Then and only then will things improve in trinidad.
