I have a friend who is being offered a senior lecturer in the faculty of social sciences.

He is saying the basic salary is TTD 370,000.

The cost of living has changed so much when I was last there I was unable to tell him if that is good money or now small money. He calculates he will have an after-tax $12,000 per month after rent, and exclusive of car.

Help? Please?

It depends. Is he coming alone or with a family?

how did he calculate that? Does he know that the housing and travelling allowances and the pension deduction are tax free?

Well, he did say to me it was between 12-15ish......

Yes Kem, I think his calculations were aware of the info you mentioned

But no one yet told me if this is an ok salary or if you could live comfortably with your wife, teenage kids (2) and a primary school one.

If renting and car are taking care of as you stated and they are not "luxury" in their thinking then I think they will be just fine.

you dont take a job in another country to be fine........you take it to make a fortune

He won't be making a fortune at all. That's approximately 2kUS-3kUS/month after taxes. Rent in a comfortable community can cost that much in TT. Factor in food and other expenses, he will have to watch his pennies closely. That salary doesn't allow for surplus and luxury (ie fortune) living.

Best he sticks with his current profession or get his wife to supplement his income upon relocation.

Ebony, rent and car are taking care of.

Falcs, then forget it. No way he is going to live "the" life with that salary.

Falcon, a senior lecturer's take home is much more than that. There are lots of allowances added. A Junior lecturer'safter-tax take home is much more than that. TRUST ME.

wow, thanks guys.

I think I will have to contact him; let him keep himself in cold, wet Manchester a lil while longer.

I hope he give me the right figures to ask about eh............

12,000 per month is reasonable by Trini standards in general, but I ent sure how it compares for lecturers.

For a single person, it should be more than enough.

"More than enough" is relative. With tax, rent in a decent area, bills and payments on a new car most of that salary is already gone. Compared to a UK salary, especially in higher education, that will probably be a laughable figure especially if the man is expected to migrate on top of that.

That said, UWI offers a lot of benefits. He should find out more about those benefits to determine what his actual take-home will be. It might be much more than $12,000.
