View Full Version : Increase In The True Murder Rate - Shocking!

While the number of murders in Trinidad and Tobago has been generally on the rise over the past few years, the appropriate index of comparison is really the number of murders per capita, usually expressed as the number of murders per 100,000.

Consequently, one needs an estimate of the population (by year) if a meaningful analysis of the murder rate is to be carried out. The problem is that population estimates are notoriously inaccurate and a cursory visit to the web will show that for T&T, the estimates vary considerably.

However, what is clear from most sources is that the population of T&T has been declining over the past few years (negative growth rate). The point here is that even if the number of murders is approximately the same for 2005, 2006 and 2007, the true murder rate (the number of murders per 100,000) has been increasing, because the population has been decreasing.

By some estimates, the population of T&T in 2005 was approximately 1.3 million whereas in 2007 it was a little more than 1 million. If these estimates are roughly correct, it means that the true murder rate has increased by approximately 33% between 2005 and 2007.

The government can choose to spin the figures any way they want. The grim reality is that the murder rate is on the increase!

In any comparison, we should strive to obtain the approximate value of the correct index (number of murders per 100,000) rather than the exact value of the wrong one (number of murders).

is there any estimation of the death rate by natural causes?

and then there's road fatalities and accidental deaths.

also, what is the # of live births?
another thing to consider is life expectancy being reduced, due to illnesses not being treated properly. How effective and available are health care-related commodities to the population also influence death rates.

figures can be misinterpreted if you dont sift through the data with a fine tooth comb. I guess thats why statisticians are paid so well .

I have tried to determine the above mentioned data from the Central Statistical Office but was unable to. What I do know is that the net population is decreasing each year. In other words,
# deaths + # emigrants (those leaving) is greater than
# births + # immigrants (those arriving).

I think that the net decrease each year is approximately 10,000 to 11,000.

The government has the census data but is reluctant to release it.

WOW !!! At this rate, T&T will be devoid of people in 100 years?

Just going by this
https://www.cia.gov/library/publication ... os/td.html (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/td.html)

Population: 1,056,608 (July 2007 est.)
Growth rate: -0.883% (2007 est.)

So, multiply those two together, and it's just over 9,000 folks less a year. According to this here website (http://www.nationmaster.com/red/graph/peo_pop_gro_rat-people-population-growth-rate&b_desc=1), we have second greatest population decline rate in the world, just below the cook islands.

Actually, this net decrease will continue for some time, but then there will probably an increasing immigration rate from the smaller islands, or maybe even from Africa as the Caribbean establishes closer ties with that continent.

Indian immigrants have been coming here for a while too.
(from India).

IIRC, the government over there is apparently pretty aggressive with reestablishing ties to the diaspora.

Steuppesss ... look at dis. Big man like you an yuh doh even know de population of T&T. It lookin' like Naps math better dan Pres after all.
1,300,000 - ( 11,000 x 25 ) = 0?

(11,000 x 25) = 275,000

1,300,000 - 275,000 = 1,272,500

Dais Pres calculation;

Dis iz Naps calculation
1,056,608 - (11000 x 100)

1,056,608 - 1,100,000 = – 43,392. A negative amount.

Any Questions? Bahahahahaha ... Wheel an come again .... bahahahahahaha

The Americans have 200,000 foreigners in jail awaiting deportation for criminal activities. We can guess that every Island in the Caribbean has a percentage of them who may still continue their criminal activities. I wonder how our laws deal with criminals from the other surrounding islands?

If ah foreigner commits a crime locally, depending on what the crime is, I think the foreigner serves part of a jail term in Trinidad if found guilty. I don't know how accurate this is.
