I did a blood test a couple weeks ago and went for the results this morning. The Dr said that my cholesterol was 248 :o

Now i am stressed out. I thought i ate healthy and i would normally exercise, i find the results to be very strange. So i've been given a nutrition sheet and 6 weeks to lower my cholesterol or else i go on medication :s:

Good news is everything else is fine

vaio

lots of vegetables - mostly green and mostly steamed, little meat and if i do have meat its chicken - grilled, baked and very rarely some fried, fish and sometimes shrimp, fruits and a little almonds.

I must admit though that i do indulge in one quarter of sada roti 4 dys/week.

I rarely drink soft drinks but i enjoy crangrape and water.

i normally exercise at least 3 times a week for about an hour a day.

See my aim was to become a blood donor this year so i made a conscious effort to be healthy.

Chicken (and eggs), butter, ice cream, meats in general are high in cholesterol. Maybe you need to cut a lil on your consumption of meat and sada roti! And of course, take another test.

Vaio, were you busy in the few hours prior to taking the test? Stress can make the readings artificially high.

Your diet sound quite good. If I was pressed into suggesting something, I'd like you to say you ate more fish than just rarely. Once your water intake is high, I doubt that test result very much.

All responses thus far would indicate that the lipid hypothesis is alive and well.

So, let me get this straight.
A doctor told you that your cholesterol is 248 and you're now freaked out? Why?

Everybody is trying to come up with a way to lower that number. Why?
What does that number tell us?
By itself, Not much.

It's just one of four numbers on a typical lipid panel. Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and Triglycerides.
There are more important numbers and ratios which would raise concern.

What were the other numbers?

Total cholesterol is NOT a good predictor of cardiovascular disease. LDL is more accurate.
If you're going to look at LDL, then you also have to look at particle size.
You could make a fairly accurate guess as to particle size based on the other numbers.

If everything is fine as you say, then stress is factor that most ignore.

Was a thyroid panel done? Hypothyroidism is often overlooked.

It's easier to prescribe a statin to CYA than do a little thinking.
Challenge your doctor to justify his course of action.

Arite, lemme stop dey. Allyuh kerry orn.

Actually i was! My son was vomiting for the entire night and i took him to the doctor the following morning. I just had a quick cup of coffee before took him to see the doctor. When i got there i decided what the heck, i might was well see him too and do the blood tests. We waited for about 5hrs before we were able to see him, at which point i was sleep deprived, hungry and upset.

Well i am supposed to go back to him with the results of an ultra sound which is to determine the level of oxygen going to my brain. I have been experiencing a little problem where at times i see darkness all around and a weak feeling when it occurs. This is worrying as i don't want this to occur when i am driving. He suggested hypoglycemia but my sugar level was 84 so ultra sound is next thing to do :s:

I realise my post as well, contains essentially a judgement of a medical practitioner based on what info vaio provided me. Should it be incomplete info, then the assessment and conclusion may be unfair to the guy. The message I wanted to get across to vaio was that in this world, some medics who work for certain institutions, will not use their trained brains to link dots, but push patients to get every test under the sun done. The medics could arrive at a diagnosis long in advance if they just used their upstairs and as a by product, save their patients stress and time and money. I am not saying this doctor is like this, but .......can't shake it.

VAIO my friend, I think TRINIS have a propensity to having high cholesterol. There is no evidence to that, that's just my observation. I have been told more than 15 years ago, that my cholesterol is high. I have been put on provacol , but, i never took it. I use red yeast rice. Interesting abstract – full article is in Japanese.

The authors of this paper disagree with blindly reducing total cholesterol.

These levels are unreasonable considering that the TC levels of 240-260 mg/dL are optimal in terms of all-cause mortality for the Japanese population.

Oh, and let’s not talk about conflicts of interest involved in determining at what TC levels statins are to be prescribed.

Green tea is very good for the health. It helps in burning of fats and it also control our body cholesterol level. I suggest you to drink green tea more and more it will low down your cholesterol.
