The next time you are about to break that New Year resolution, remember - strike up
that all-important conversation with yourself. The New Year brings with it promises of
new beginnings. We just need to use our inner voice more. People who talked them-
selves into doing or not doing something were less impulsive and more successful than
those who didn't listen to their inner voice.

Continue to use self control can be difficult, 2011 brings fresh challenges,
be less extravagant, take more exercise, spend more time with friends and
family, and most definitely eat fewer slices of mid-afternoon cake. Listen to
yourself.

There are moments in your life with you must act, even though you cannot
carry your best friends with you. The still small voice within you must
always be the final arbiter when there is a conflict of duty

To believe and to understand are not diverse
things, but the same things in different periods of
growth.

It is not the world that confines you, you
yourself are the World, which holds you so
fast a prisoner with yourself in yourself.

Since the beginning of time, humankind has told of a 'small voice' speaking to us from the core of our being
in moments of danger or great intensity directing us to safety, or towards our destiny. In his latest book,
Dr Phillipe Presles, who has spent his life researching human consciousness, quotes a large number of
testimonies referring to this 'small voice' - assured, quiet, powerful and persuasive - giving much needed
advice and reassurance. It is often bveen interpreted as the voice of God, or of the soul. He explains how
we can control our consciousness, even in our darkest moments.
This is the meaning of William Ernest Henley's poem Invictus, which inspired Nelson Mandela during imprisonment on Robben Island.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul
[...]
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

It is important to understand how we became
conscious beings, and whether that helps us
in the search for happiness. Of course, having
a deeper understanding of the nature and
working of our consciousness can help us feel
in control of our own lives, and give meaning
to our existence.

There are two types of people: shades-of grey (ambivalent) and black-and-white
(straightforward-decision-makers. Ambivalent people avoid making a choice, while
black-and-white thinkers take sides more easily. Often people with a black-and-white
attitude feel uncomfortable with uncertainty, while the ambivalent are more at ease
with it. Personality and education play a role, but it is often suggested culture is crucial.
In Western societies, there is such a thing as the right decision, while in Eastern
philosophies value dualism, meaning anything can be right and wrong at the same time.

The new technology is as important to modern man as the discovery of fire was so to early man.
We are going to turn in the distant future into a race of people who possess extraordinary
communication with one an other - and the language of communication will be an art.

Whether at home or in the middle of the street, it is always surprising when we find
ourselves talking out loud, it can become embarrassing. Where does the habit comes
from? How can you stop it? Private speech is an essential part of development in
childhood - facilitates learning, such as memorising vocabulary, and working through
maths problems. But despite its potential value, we learn at a young age that talking
aloud to ourselves is socially unacceptable, and stigmatised as a potential sign of
madness. Do you listen to the inner voice?

All emotion demands action. If you don't do something about it,
then you get eaten up by it...
