Anybody going?

Right now I reporting from Point Fortin and de place is ah mess. Sando closer to here than town, but seem like de people down here eh fazed by travelling the longer distance. From de looks of things, dey getting dey thousand from this constituency.

I on the other hand will take up the observer status.

PS: I also look forwARd to seeing who is up for the COP and where they will be going. Traditionally the PNM and UNC would put a candidate that matches the constituents. COP are expected to move away from that. After all it is "new politics" with a "national framework".

Permit me to quote you here, crowds do not necessarily translate into votes. And from where I am, I can see that a significant number of those are teenagers.

In case you all are wondering where I am, I am in front my PC with updated videos sent to me via e-mail.

Kamla should know by now that there is no way she will ever be leader as long as Bas is around. It's kind of sad that she got her hopes up.

Which news did you hear Sola? I heard on either CNMG or TV6 while flicking through that the police estimate was 30,000 +. Tuned in to 91.9 and Gladiator said they had well over 41,000 but he had to be joking. He also claimed the adjoining streets were filled with mini sessions.

As 4 COP, they had a huge crowd as well but have not heard a figure.

perkelv
10-06-2007, 09:07 PM
Police estimate was 30,00
But we'll see what the COP press will say tomorrow.
Remember how they played up the COP crowd in Woodford square?
I have issues with the way the press (esp Newsday) have gone so far into the pockets of COP financires that they are actually trying to manipulate the public. Sometimes subtly sometimes not.

Take for instance in todaya's Newsday, there was the headline "Rain on PNM's parade?" which basically telegraphed to PNM supporters about the likelihood of rain. While COP's "parade" was also today, they briefly mention at the very end of the article, that COP's rally may just escape the forecasted afternoon showers.

it may seem a little thing, but when you see this kind of thing day after day it gets ridiculous. They don't seem to realise they are losing credibility in the eyes of discerning readers. Maybe they think their readers are foolish and fall into the same trap they accuse the PNM and UNC of.

Out of curiosity, can anyone here name a single editorial or article of some length that says _anything_ negative about the COP in _any_ of the dailies? Think about it, are they that perfect!? The fact that a significant portion of their leadership consists of disgruntled (often failed) breakouts from other parties and eras seems lost on them.

Where is the investigative journalism that will unearth the reason for the huge swing of the Syrian support and finance to the COP?

peanut
10-06-2007, 09:39 PM
Hey Perk, what is so different this time as it was in the last election except it was doing for the PNM what they are now doing for the COP?

I remember all PNM supporters lapping up everything the Media was reporting while the UNC supporters were crying foul, I suppose what goes around really comes around huh?

Intelligent, and experienced people know that the Media can make a Politician and it can break him.

BW

Where is the investigative journalism that will unearth the reason for the huge swing of the Syrian support and finance to the COP?

What kind of investigative journalism tell you it have an upswing ah syrian support and finance for COP?

The thing about Trinidad politics... de media isn't nearly as effective as all the rumshop talk and whisper campaigns. The media can say what it wants, it's the grassroots that make or break politicans.

Anyway, Trinidad has a long history of people owning and using their own media outlets to fuel their political campaigns. The Express at one time was implicated in that. The "Probe" is also arguably a current example. You could also possibly call Impshan Ishmal's IBN network as being a blow-horn for his views.

Nothing is wrong with that. Get your message out with as many different outlets as possible. That is the definition of free speech. However, if anyone can prove there is an organised effort to censor a particular view, then please, come forward with your information. I love investigative journalism. :)

Yetming said in the rally for people to check the papers tomorrow or Monday because there is a poll coming out that places Dookeran as the favorite for PM, the last poll also had Kamla being placed very low but from the support she got over the last few days I wonder how she could of been placed that low. The papers had a lot to do with feeding the fire of this Kamla thing saying that she was going to be given leadership of the UNC when no decision of that nature was being asked by anyone in the UNCA, it was just to put someone to lead the Alliance fraction of the UNCA.

Today they are saying that Cadiz is going to resign on Monday, why Monday? If he is so upset about something why take two days to then say I leaving the UNCA is Cadiz not running for some seat under the UNCA ticket so what then he is not running again? The media made a big deal about Kamal not attending the media conference with Jack even I bought into it saying something wrong, they even hinted that she may go to the COP next thing Kamla makes a statement totally opposite to what they printed saying she is UNC and will remain a UNC.

Why all the effort to cause confusion in the mind of the voters, why this sudden desire from one section of the society to give the impression through the media that the COP is the only stable party when all others seem to be having trouble. The COP will all the talk they ready to rumble comes with 37 candidate to me that gives PNM a head start with two seats Tobago, as the UNC already said they not contesting the Tobago seats.

I am also very sure the media will have nothing to say about the COP selection of candidates I was not impressed, yes there are a few in there I would say can hold their own but the majority sure did not strike me and this surge of brilliant people coming to take T&T forward far less taking seats away from the PNM and critical seats at that. The D/Martin candidates are the worse they not even going to rattle those PNM strongholds Rowely and Imbert must be laughing and holding their bellies with glee, I am waiting to see the full list and I am sure I can draw a red line through most of them, the COP must really think this is a joke exactly what PNM seats with these candidates they expect to win, they really cant be serious.

I have no problem with newspapers backing a party, but they should come out openly and not try to do hatchet jobs on others behind the mask of "journalism".

As i said elsewhere the message is often subtle: take for instance todays Guardian report of the 2 rallies:

The COP:

A rainbow formed in the skies over Skinner Park yesterday evening, as the Congress of the People presented 38 of its 41 candidates

The PNM:

Jumping up to steelband music and eating bake and shark on Independence Square yesterday, PNM supporters were yesterday stopped in their tracks when rain began to fall,

See any difference in the laguage? LOL
That's just the tip of the iceberg. After ranting all of the last week or two about the big rift because of the Rahael, and Seukeran and Hinds factors. They make absolutely no mention that these same people came out to support the party and were very much present in today's activities. In fact, the Guardian reported virtually nothing about the PNM meeting except the 2% of Manning's speech that pitched some Picong at the other parties.

I mean, if that is what passses for journalism in this country, all i can say is that these papers have no moral authority to criticise politicians when they themselves are the most dishonest and unprofessional bunch, truly reflecting our banana republic status.

Right Peanut and you are an strong advocate for the COP, but lord look at the people running for the D/Martin seats and tell me who taking those seats from the PNM. I support the UNCA yes but I have never came on here and pretended that the UNCA going to win it all, I have always maintained unlike some COP supporters that my view is PNM for the win. COP promised something different, new a strong slate and most of you bought into that I don't see it and to win government they are going to need 22 seats or more.

I don't pull the wool over my eyes I call it as I see it, the only thing UNCA can do is fight to maintain the Opposition they sure as hell not getting into government but since the belief is the COP can show me where, COP putting a man Rocky Garcia against Keith Rowley this has to be a joke, Joe Piers against Imbert another act of comedy, and Nicole Dyer against the young PNM doctor, that is three seats that PNM will maintain plus 2 from Tobago, so how the hell they forming the next government ....wake up nah and smell the coffee don't come and tell me I support UNC so that is why am not impressed, facts are facts and I don't live in la la land, the candidates that the COP came with cannot hold their own against the PNM new faces so deal with it, maybe you wishing for a miracle and a big one but not with those candidates.

Does it really matter who the candidates are? I was listening to that program on the WinTV called "The War Room", and they had a political scientist on there. He said, in no uncertain terms, that people vote based on party, and very little is based on the actual candidates. From my own experience, that sounds about correct.

At the end of the day we read newspaers to be reliably informed not so? Your editorial writers can take whatever slant they wish, but when it comes to reporting events and you deliberately misrepresent or conceal facts, or enhance and polish what actually occured when it suits your agenda is downright dishonesty.
