well the first thing is to not be scared- there are many things that can kill you, not just diabetes.

the major precautions should take are: getting a good diet, and exercise. Obesity is a major risk factor for developing diabetes, and for the most part is the only one you can control. So switch from regular soda to diet soda, or water, or whatever works for you.

important to note there are different types of diabetes. Type 2 is the more common one and what I'm guessing your parents and grandparents have. There's type 1 (also called juvenile diabetes), usually in children and requires insulin. And there's gestational diabetes (diabetes which happens during pregnancy)- it is usually checked for during prenatal visits.

BALMERSMITH: You have described my family :) There is /was diabetes on both sides of my family. Of our 5 sibblings, one has died of complications from diabetes, one has diabetes and one trys her best to keep hers under control.
The sibling who died from complication from diabetes, did not take care of herself, this is one of my own and I can say so. This sibling has 2 children and one has diabetes...hmm what can I say, this child is now a grown woman and is now kind of taking care of herself. There are now grandchildren involved...what I did was to literally draw a family tree and show them that they are next in line to have diabetes...THEY MUST MAINTAIN A HEALTY WEIGHT, EAT PROPERLY AND EXERCISE REGULARLY.

Yes I do know that I am in line to have diabetes and I am doing all of the healty things to hopefully never get diabetes. What you have to do is to EDUCATE yourself now. You are at the right age to make all of the good judgements.

I hope you will come back and chat with us. And welcome aboard :)

BALMER .... here a a short list of things you can do. I am not saying it will prevent you from getting Diabetes, but it can surely delay the onset.

Eat all your foods that are prepared from fresh vegetables.

Do not eat White rice .... [Basmati brown rice is perfect]

Do not eat White Bread ... Whole wheat only

Do not eat anything made with White flour..... [Arsenic is one of the chemicals used for bleaching]

Switch cooking oil to Olive oil rather than vegetable or canola oil.

Cut off the use of all fast food.

When cooking chicken, remove all skin and trim off the fat.

Avoid the yolk of eggs as much as possible ... egg yolk raises your cholesterol level.

Do not eat processed foods or fruits.

Make oily Fish [Carite and Wild Salmon] an integral part of your diet. [at least twice a week] ... the Omega 3 + 6 will make the red blood cells more susceptible to absorbing insulin.

As snacks ... fresh fruits and nuts is highly recommended.

Never take supplements without talking to your Dr. first.

Remember, eating in moderation is very important so it's best to leave the Table while you are still hungry..
