I left TNT in 2004, returned in 2005, left again a few months later haven't seriously thought about returning since. I am far off from retirement, but whether I retire in TNT or not will depend on a lot of things, like suppose I end up getting married to a non-Trini and she doesn't want to settle in TNT....and of course there are many other factors.

Left Trini 10 years ago. No way I will be retiring there, but will visit every year. It is important that my child (I eh have one yet) knows his/her heritage.

Left Trinidad 41 years ago, emegrated when the entire family did; most of my extended family and other childhood friends also did; somewhere along the way some of us thought it would be nice to return to T&T after retirement; however now that we are at that point, the T&T we left is not the same, so for some of us plans have changed.
Having said that, if the crime situation changes for the better, and the medical environment improves (the two things that are very important to 'Seniors'), we would be on the first jet back to T&T.......... Winters are hell

You have to remember some of us that are thinking of coming back are not coming 'to take' (we are not entitled to T&T pensions), we are coming 'to spend'. We will be buying property, cars, food, paying for medical (at the best facilities), dental, drugs et al; paying whatever taxes are applicable to us; all of this with money that has been earned out of the country, and from pensions and other investments earned elsewhere, in other words, someone else has provided the income to which T&T will now be getting 'the cream'; don't ever discount the disposable income of foreign Seniors, when some of us talk about returning all we are really after is, as we refer to it..... the four S's (Sun, Sand, Surf and Safety) hopefully a more relaxed lifestyle.

snowbird that is so true.
People who criticize Expat retirees for coming 'back home' from 'first world' countries really don't understand economics the way the first world countries do. Right now with the 'Baby Boomers' possessing most of the disposable income either gained through inheritances (their parents were of the Life Insurance is the only investment mindset, and those policies are now paying off) or through shrewd investments; Governments of the developed countries are now struggling with the challenge of how to keep all that money within their country; they are painfully aware that there is a whole generation now approaching the 'take the money and run' era

No I am not planning on returning to T&T but would like to visit one day, to see all the changes I left in 1971 and have not been back yet. I live in Canada now, yes it can get very cold but you just have to live. My children and grand children are here and would miss them if I leave, but they would enjoy coming to the sun.

Well, since I'm not a foreigner, but still a citizen of a CARICOM country, as evidenced by my bona fide T&T passport, I can own property there, without penalties.
