This mths Nat Geo has a good article in eWaste. eWaste is all the garbage (monitors, circuit boards ...) generated by the eAge. I did not know but the US is shipping a lot of this junk to 3rd world countries. People in these countries are sometimes using their kitchen wares to separate lead etc from in the boards. How horrible is that? The last line in the article mentions that US is shipping this junk to China and now China is sending back toys etc with lead in it - recycling at it's best!!! It goes to show that what might make econonic sense may not be the cheapest solution.

There is a seminar this week concerning ewaste.
Its kinda pricy to attend though...around $1200 for students and $1400 I think for groups of 4 or more. :?

What measures do we have in Tdad to deal with ewaste? I know SWMCOL does not accept it at landfills and dumps. So where does ours go? I threw away batteries and cell phones in the regular trash many times before. I didnt know they were especially hazardous. But no one seems to know the proper procedure ie aside from turning to private companies to take your ewaste.

See, this is what I do not understand, why should it cost you to learn how to help save your planet? You would think that these would all be sponsored programs, paid for by among other people, the corporations who manufacture all of this stuff that we are stuck with.
Right now in our community we do have programs for handling e-waste, but guess who's paying for it? Tax payers ofcours.

Nice news for a change: International conference being hed in Bali to see what can be done to slow down nasty trend of so called developed countries from "off shoring" potentially toxic eWaste.

there's a company here that takes your ewaste. I'm trying to convince my company to put our old pcs etc there but they keep counting the amount of money they need to pay them ..... i mean come on! what are you going to do? leave it to sit in our building and rot?

This is another company that deals with e-waste: http://www.caribbeantechdisposals.com/
It will take some time though before local companies really start to dispose of their e-waste appropriately. For now it remains far too easy to shove it into a storeroom or too acceptable to just call some man with a truck to tote it all away to who knows where.
