If it "suddenly" becomes slow it is usually because of the following:
A recently installed program that is using a lot of resources
too many programs running at startup
errors in registry
malaware or spyware running in the background.

The best program to remove spyware is malawarebytes (http://software-files-l.cnet.com/s/software/11/37/59/88/mbam-setup-1.46.exe?e=1290292986&h=6fae5fbfbd6c4db56642c4e6cf32cefd&lop=link&ptype=1901&ontid=8022&siteId=4&edId=3&spi=b57b5678d59c1a6a2c3f74847338124c&pid=11375988&psid=10804572&fileName=mbam-setup-1.46.exe) a free program just remember to update before you run it.
You need to use Hijackthis (http://software-files-l.cnet.com/s/software/11/64/20/07/HijackThis.exe?e=1290292934&h=6f6e1925c45bf529adbb2b18d78fcb11&lop=link&ptype=1901&ontid=8022&siteId=4&edId=3&spi=f8e84db2a5bc94d9d44f361c8b27dc2d&pid=11642007&psid=10227353&fileName=HijackThis.exe) as well to remove unwanted items that attach themselves to your browser.
A free program that you can use to manage start up items as well as registry problems is glary utilities (http://software-files-l.cnet.com/s/software/11/63/21/07/gusetup.exe?e=1290292887&h=f3d6ac6e6c6ae17b68ef46f94ccdffb7&lop=link&ptype=1901&ontid=2094&siteId=4&edId=3&spi=f9b5d5ded20ac4359fccc82301e90f12&pid=11632107&psid=10508531&fileName=gusetup.exe) ( just remember to back up before you delete anything - it prompts you to do so )

As for the internet connection tweaking and tests I suggest you use tcpOptmizer (http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe).

Visit speedguide.net (http://www.speedguide.net/) for some useful articles and tweaks ( remember to backup your computer before applying any registry tweaks )

Good Luck

Great suggestions above especially if the issue is the PC. Your Internet connection could be a source of your problem as well. Use the Packet Loss and Delay Test (http://www.hostmycalls.com/tools/)tool to test your connection and your ISP.

for youtube specifically, i find sometimes switching the resolution of the video (360p/480p/720p) sometimes fixes the buffering problem.

First you have to see if the trouble is the PC or Internet carrier. Some carriers would deliberately throttle you if you are a heavy user. Sometimes it is a good idea to reset your Modem and Router as they may become corrupted over time.

It could also be a problem with the ISP's infrastructure. You could call them and see if there is a problem in their network.

Is your PC slow overall, or just your internet connection?

Netgear is fine. I had one for several years that worked better than equivalent Linksys units. Don't bother to go changing your router unless you have reason to.

Really do need to know if it's just the internet connection or the entire PC that's running slowly to give any proper advice...

I had 2 Linksys over the years with bad experiences. I am 100% satisfied with my D-Link 8-port wired router. My wireless US Robitics also works flawlessly. I swapped my old 10 year old Alcatel modem (started to give intermittent errors) for the new Thompson ADSL2 type format.

You are correct. I have four routers in my office, on of which is a wired Netgear. What I don't like about the Netgear, though, is the (to me) deficient web interface. Works fine otherwise.

Bur really, in order to solve this Internet problem, more detail is required.
I would also recommend clearing the DNS cache. This is a prime cause of internet slowdowns.

Also, try OpenDNS or Google DNS.

For me, Google DNS gives me much faster response to Internet searches, and (seemingly) faster page loading.

Interfacing with my WRT160N is less complicated now though I'd vowed in the pass to toss it over the wall...

More information's needed before a proper diagnosis can be made.

you can do a system restore, and go back to a point where the internet connection was speedy.
