Help!
How I fix this error?
Can this be fixed using the Windows installation Recovery Console part of the Cd?.. If yes, how?
I tried F8 (last known good configuration) and it went straight back to the error screen.
I dunno what to try again :( :bawling:

Oh sorry. It's a Windows XP system. And not an out-of-the-box pc..it was built.
I have tried searching Microsoft's site already.
They said if your Windows system is not an OEM one, then you should leave it to a professional as it could create passwords and stuff when using the Recovery Console.
I DID attempt the other fixes, like F8 on start up and selecting to use "last known good config" but no luck :(
I DID try using the DOS screen in the Recovery Console but I havent used DOS commands in yrs and am very rusty so i was goin in circles...I stopped because I know the more I do, the more I can screw it up! AH!
couldnt you just reinstall (not reformat) and keep all the old data as an archive? that's kinda inelegant but it will get the system running at least

I really dont know..Wouldnt you have to have enough room on your harddrive to create an archive?
I have maybe 10-15gigs of space remaining on the drive...sigh

I am about to attempt this solution but am scurd! (scared)
At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line: md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak
delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer will restart.

OR should I try this one which is creating a new config directory??
How to fix [/contents/win/winintro.php3 Windows] system32 config system is corrupt in Windows xp [http://www.techgyaan.org/2008/07/win...ystem-is.html] (http://www.techgyaan.org/2008/07/win...ystem-is.html%5D)
Resolution:
1. Insert your Windows Xp CD and reboot (http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-327608.php#) from the CD drive
[To boot from CD, go to BIOS Setup option on startup and select your CD/DVD drive as the first boot drive, save the present settings and exit]
Your computer (http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-327608.php#) will reboot & will boot from Windows Xp
2. Press ‘R’ when offered the option of using the Windows Recovery Console
Recovery Console will prompt at the command prompt type the following:
C:\WINDOWS >cd system32\
this changes the current directory to C:\Windows\System32
ren config configold
This renames the config folder to configold
mkdir config
this makes a new directory called config
cd config
changes the current directory to c:\Windows\System32\Config
then type the following lines pressing enter after each one
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security
copy c:windows\repair\default
after each line it should say:
1 file copied
type: exit
Now your system will reboot
[To boot from Hard Drive, go to BIOS Setup option on startup and select your Hard drive as the first boot drive, save the present settings and exit]

If you can start windows with command prompt , pop windows cd then type sfc/ scannow this will replace all missing or corrupt files
Hopefully you have a cd with the latest service pack otherwise you will have to re install latest service pack and all subsequent updates.
good luck

ok. After booting from the installion Cd. instead if you pressing R to repair using the recovery console, press enter to setup XP now
then press f8 to accept agreement the next screen should list your current installation and offer the option to repair installation or install afresh copy of XP without repairing. Now pess R to repair installation , it is automatic and will not need you to type anything. If the windows installation cd does not find your current installation then thats a different kettle of fish.

Just my take on things, I see this thread running for awhile with very good technical consults but
y'all doing things the complicated way .. bah to fixing those kinds of windows errors
ask yourselves *(why did it happen in the first place?? mysterious Wednesday night corruption lotto, did anything else get messed up,? are you going to have very unstable apps running after the "repair") wouldn't it be easier to just reinstall windows, if there are no issues with data recovery or availability of apps it can take under 30minutes without any brain work!
anyhow assuming app installs can be sourced.. the alternative to all this is boot with a linux live cd or usb key, backup data and reinstall windows...
2hrs to backup data if it is plenty and depending on how how much and how organized your data is and what media you use + 1hr to reinstall windows and apps
gparted live 30mb -- resize hdd and repartition drive for separate data and OS partitions if you do not already have
peanut linux live 56mb -- nice graphical interface to move your data to new "data" only partition
windows and apps -- install to OS partition
or better yet install Ubuntu linux -- pretty much apps inclusive !
