See webchat on this: what ideas do you have? I require baseline studies for a small, hot, humid tropical island which is like a distillation flask sometimes, how much formaldehyde and formic acid will we get in the air?:
Its std chemistry, oxidation of an alcohol to the parent aldehyde then to formic acid then to CO2.
"Formaldehyde: Knowing the amount of old vehicles in TT and they are not well maintained, I would expect partial oxidative products in the exhausts meaning formaldehyde- a known carcinogen, on EPA watch list. You have been to Rio and Brazil, you see how the air smells sweet?, that is due to partial oxidation products of acetaldehyde. Thus I hope they the Methanex and Govt have done their homework and have accumulated baseline studies, as all too often now we read of industries embarking on profits for its shareholders and overlooking the damage done to the population and the environment. Its a great idea if implemented properly but care has to be taken especially for TT's types of old vehicles. Maybe we need the MOT Test certificates for all cars, for fuel exhaust emissions ratings and looking for formaldehyde and not only CO2? So baseline statistics first and then monitor after introduction of the 3-5% Methanol in gasoline."
